The reef's a joke. Half the UK's going to descend on the spot when the swell picks up. Boards, heads and ego's are going to be broken and bruised like nobody's business, with the RNLI left to pick up the bits. The only plus side will be that everywhere else'll be less crowded. You won't catch me on it, not unless it's snowing, early or late and heaving, when everyone else'll be too phased to take it on. Besides, there are a few spots around that'll be working as well as the reef if not better when the swell's solid. I don't want to diss it too much, but I'm very skeptical. I'm keen to see whether the supposed environmental benefits are going to materialize, or whether that was just another selling point to get money into the back pockets of dodgy council staff. Bring on the comedy!!

wow, well i didnt think this debate would kick off like this, but its great that some excellent points have been made.. 1. Surf for enjoyment, but surf safely and with respect for others in the water, whatever their level! 2. If your a beginner, great get out on the water, we were all beginners once, but learn the rules and stay away from the main crowds/breaks until you can fully manage yourself both when riding and when getting out/in the line up...if you hve to let go fo your board to get through waves, then move away from the crowds!! 3. communicate clearly, ive surfed all over the world in some really crowded places, and never had a problem, respect the locals and take turns, its always better surfing with a good crowd then with enemies! 4. There is absolutely no place for violence, educate where poss and explain dangers as some people dont know! 5. remember even the best surfers make mistakes sometimes, the line up is an ever changing pitcure and its easy to occasionally get it wrong, but if you do, pull out asap and say sorry! oh and 6..yep i agree the council need to be proactive here, the 'new' sand has taken away so many breaks its been brewing for a while...council please speak to surfers before making decisions!!! if you going to use surf to market the area, then it makes sense that the surfers will be your best library of information! (i was amazed last month when i was asked if the reef didnt work, would driving a boat up and down make waves!) shocking!! this shows how much the council needs educating..lets work together, get clear rules displayed, encourage beginners to surf outside the main breaks and make our local breaks what they used to be!!

Well it looks like the comments are possibly coming to an end, thanks to those with well thought and explained comments as there has been some helpful information. I have said it before but I will use the phrase again. There are 2 types of surfers. A – The people who take up surfing because they think it looks cool. B – The people who take up surfing and are actually cool. People can make their own mind up which type of surfer somebody is by watching them on the water or reading comments on here. B type surfers/waveskiers/playboaters/body boarders all welcome to chat, chill and exchange opinions over a cuppa coffee/tea. I am hoping to make it to Kimmeridge on the 20th of June so hopefully see some of you all there.

Firstly great photo Luke & despite some of the comments please keep putting them up as good healthy debate has its place too on here. I was also out on this day on my surf mat(best thing I have ever had in my quiver) as its such a larf. However Mr Red may have punctured me if it had been me in the above pic! My main point anyway on this debate is that despite several opportunities Mr Red (sorry Don`t know yr name) has yet to do the right thing & admit he was totally wrong to cause a nasty split above a fellow surfers eye over the fact this guy was possibly wrongly dropping in on him. That was his account when I spoke to the visibly shaken guy having been concerned for what I thought was the results of a genuine surfing accident. When you (Mr Red) do the right thing & publicly admit you regret your out of order extremely aggressive behaviour I will give you the respect you possibly deserve, being I guess an experienced local. This is localism in its most ugly form, localism of the kind Bench Lord (Guy) is suggesting is the kind of self policing by experienced locals that is sorely needed of which Mr Red could I am sure be a part of if he wants to change things locally & fully accepts his form of localism is un-welcome. Use your aggression/passion for surfing in a possitive way as I am sure if your honest you had a shite session, as did the poor fella you hit. Lastly I put my pic on here not because I think I am gorgeous(que comments!) but because I stand by everything I say and would happily say the same to someones face, I wonder how many of the contributors with the lesser constructive comments would do the same. Name yourselves, show who you are and stand up & be judged in public, not hidden behind your cowardly keyboard if you stand by your comments I say. The best surfer is the one having the most fun, we would all do well to remember that before everytime we step into the water - Gary Elford from Bournemouth, stand up surfer(badly!), waveskier, kayaker, surf mat (soon also a SUP) peace ;-)

Gazza42 Jun 9, 2009 Rating: -1

Hi Mr Red(sorry still don`t know yr name) Most of what you say I cannot disagree with, but the example you set by hitting these idiots in the water helps no one, even thou your frustration is understandable. I don`t see how it will ever help your aim to improve safety. What example does it send out to see an experienced guy like you behaving like this. As I say use your aggression more positevly such as getting involved with schemes like Guy has put forward. Maybe we should get a bare knuckle cage fighting ring set up on the beach to deal with these dangerous idiots after each session, I could do with a good organised punch up too occassionally, its great for dealing with all of life`s frustrations ;-)

Mr.Red....!'s avatar

Mr.Red....! Jun 9, 2009 Rating: 0

Hi Gazza 42, I would love to see things change for the better as soon as possible! However, it only seems to be getting worse every year that passes but I do believe that water safety will become even more of an issue once the completion and opening of the new reef "Weights Reef". I have had my fair share of close calls whilst enjoying myself surfing. Dropins happen, so do collisions, but while some people seem to like to think that Mr Red's behaviour is aggressive and dangerous...? On a regular basis too judging by some comments made...! I have on several occasions been on the receiving end of aggressive attitudes! Usually due to me asking someone to be careful and to consider their standards of board control "lack of it if you like" and maybe surf down the beach a bit in the interest of safety! This has seemingly got me nowhere, us nowhere.... The replies have often led to me being told to F@C? Off...! My general response to that is maybe aggressive in yours and other people’s eyes but to be issued marching orders from idiots that have clearly no interests in respecting anything, yet alone the rules of surfing! “On my local break” Ha ha ha. Its time that new comers take note! If you were to paddle out at a new wave and you knew no one. Got in the way all the time and showed no space to the local surfers! You would get moved on fairly sharpish! Don’t you think…? Why should it be any different…? I’m not looking for your respect or that of any other! Respect is earned and built up over time, maybe over time I will grow some respect for you as you in return might for me..! Who knows…? What I will add to finish is that I have been positively empathetic in respect to both the mentioned incidents and both parties have acknowledge me for that! Peace and love .

Gazza42's avatar

Gazza42 Jun 8, 2009 Rating: 1

Hi Pete, just to clarify I am refering to the other much nastier incident that has been mentioned during this discussion, which so far Mr Red has chosen to ignore, and has far greater implications than your incident shown in the pic. Which as you rightly say has been dealt with satisfactorily at the time between the two of you and on here. After all its one of those things that will still happen from time to time even by very experienced guys as its sometimes a judgement call that we cannot always get right. If yr dropping in and breaking other rules consistently and don`t give a damn, then thats a much different thing and where I totally agree with Guys suggestion of having experienced locals helping control and educate these potentially dangerous users being the good localism I and I am sure many of you would welcome. No doubt I have done something un-knowingly wrong in the past and am sure I will in the future but do I deserve a punch, no, a respectful word yes, and that way we will all become better more respectful surfers (regardless of craft!) and more importantly look out for each other and put the idiots in their place, without resorting to violence. Unless in self defence & in that case he (generalising here) will have all of us to deal with and he certainly won`t do it again if he knows punching one guy means effectively punching thirty respectful loyal locals! (whoever the foolish he may be in the future) I just know I don`t wish to see blood spilt for anything other than a genuine accident - NO IF`S OR BUTS ITS WRONG Mr Red I will happily shake your hand when you admit this for the greater good of everyone, you only get respect by setting a good example in my book.

Hi Gary. Had a good chat with you at the beginning of the session in question. As far as I can see Mr Red, (sorry for the tag) has fully admitted his part in this and I have certainly taken it as written and have moved on, etc. I am actually really surprised by the comments on here, I expected so much more, anti-wave craft nonsense, but, apart from the unwelcome direct personal attacks at Mr Red and the numpty who thinks I drive a BMW and wear shades indoors, the overriding discussion is about every surfers part to play to ensure safety in the line up. This to me has been really good to read and hopefully we can all take something from it, well done again to Luke, great pics and a very welcome contribution. Pete

Do you think we could get the local councils to issue all local residents with waterproof copies of said codes, then if a wave comes in and you're not quite sure who has right of way you can both pull up, whip them out, read appropriate sections, then having come to a gentlemans agreement about who has priority, the person with priority can then go.......

It is very simple.....the rider closest to the bowling section has priority....unless said rider is too deep in which case......the next closest rider has priority...unless said first rider attempts to go and makes it...then said second rider can choose to go or not to go.......giving the third closest rider secondary primary prioritization.......however if both the first and second said riders go the third rider has a mandatory obligation to go according to the donkey convention of and the subsequent accord of third surfer prioritization maximization.......now if a fourth rider is wearing a red wetsuit then southern hemisphere rules apply......which give all red wetsuits priority no matter what.......you really need to study up on your basic surfing rules bench warmer

well its pretty clear to me who is on the inside,it is clearly the surfer as his back leg is engulfed by the right to left train of white water or nearest the curl therefore having priority.that is not questionable really is it?my previous 3 posts now explained not to look at what went before, eyewitness accounts so to speak,to establish who in fact amongst us understands the drop in rule!this i feel is fair comment.i would suggest that at least 50% of the surfers that surf bournemouth would think the surfer on the shoulder has priority,no!im not joking they actually do!obviously if you know the rules yourself it would annoy one wouldnt it if you were dropped in on by some one who swears blind it was "their" wave, this is what starts the violence, fact.i myself have surfed in this area for nearly 40 years and i would suggest i have done more than anyone in this area to stop this happening, ask around and you will see i am no liar.i have seen the change happen in this area and accepted it and tried to make the changes happen.the booger involved said earlier about shouting that it was "his"wave therefore it was is just bollox.the phrase from the 70s was position=possesion that is the law,not sitting on the shoulder and shouting my wave.guy penwarden.campbell bros surfboards.

The body boarder was on first and therefore I'm guilty of the drop in. However, its frequently seen that someone looks to go one way and then changes and heads the other!I believed the sponger was heading left so I caught the wave, and as soon as I heard him screaming I was preparing to flick of to my right! The collision occured, yes because I dropped in... However, should he have given me a chance to react then I would have. Now I've been surfing the Piers for a fair old time now! Most the time I know I'm considered to be some what of an agro A Hole...! This is fine by me! I dont care about gaining the respect from those of you that have jumped on the band wagon! Wow this really kicked off didn't it?. Problem is no respect man. Go surf some real heavy spots this stuff hardly ever happens but if it does and your in the wrong expect some action and expect to defend your actions. Have respect for each other (I'm a sponger and can stand pretty ok too) learn the rules BEFORE trying it out. Hee Heee can't wait for that reef and the descending mongol hoards from London I'm off to Croyde and Saunton!. Boscome your welcome to it.

Looks like Mr.Red has been making a few friends. NOT! Ok it seems to be clear that many would consider this behaviour to be out of order? However it is a well known fact that if you run across the road without looking you might get run over! Surfing @ Da Pier has become more crowded year by year! Although the quality of water knowledge and general decreasing standards of the surfing, has led to increasing frustrations amongst the longer standing members of the community! I agree that we need to deal with this so that all wave riders can get a slice of fun and NOT a slice of meat taken out of em! Therefore, the more experienced should all make an effort to encourage learners amongst us to use empty line ups! The local council needs to address the issue of safety asap as the REEF "WEIGHTS REEF" is nearing completion, and this will only lead to more incidents like these! We have Life Guards at our beaches and they could be used to implement a similar system to that of the one used in France. They have been using the system at the busier beaches in Cornwall for some time now with far less incidents as a direct result! I would also like to welcome anyone who wishes to report me, kick me in etc. To kindly do as they wish! But not bother to depict me, MR.RED, BIG EGO or A HOLE although this one probably closer to the mark! Accidents happen and mistakes are made! Apologies may come, as they might not! Regardless of what some of you might think, I know I have acted positively empathetic with respect to the past incidents and that I’m right in the direction we should all be taking in making the sea safer! All the best 2 one and all Stay safe Peace and love

Point is if you dont like it, don't do it. I've seen you snake and drop just as evidenced in the photo. At that point you lose the right to lash out when it is returned in kind. A persons own actions depict how they are seen, people are simply telling it how they see it as per the comments.

Talk about dropping in on someone, this is dropping into someone! The sponger is about to be cut a new a*sehole and buggered in it!!! The guy in red is doing what many surfers are so tempted to do when the breaks get crowded with fat BMW drivers, the kind that wear sunglasses in doors and think they are something out of 'Big Wednesday' because they have a shortie wetsuit and a £6 sponge...........sorry about the rant, i just got fed up of dodging them over last weekend!!! Great pic though, you must've seen it coming to be ready for that!

Turbo Hobo's avatar

Turbo Hobo Jun 5, 2009 Rating: 1

I apologise if ive offended you as it wasn't intentional BUT like I said mate, the comment isn't aimed at you I don't have a problem at all with spongers. The picture was just an excuse to have a rant about my weekend woes! But sometimes it gets beyond a joke!!! I don't think that i'm the only one on here (including bodyboarders) who are fed up of people getting in the way when the above described people can bodyboard the breakers closer to the shore!!!! You mayhave got the wrong end of the stick here, I'm not having a go at bodyboarders par se, just the ones that stand in waist-deep water creating a slalom. At the end of the day they should know better it ruins it for everyone when you have to pull out constantly and puts a worrier on boarders as we don't wana cause injury to anyone. For the majority of people we respect the etiquette and if Mr Red has indeed dropped in on you intentionally then poor show.

Luke Gartside's avatar

Luke Gartside Jun 5, 2009 Rating: 1

hey mate, i know its not obvious from the picture but i can vouch for two things 1. The Bodyboarder was on the wave first. 2. The Bodyaboarder was a good rider (as he says in his comment) and wasnt dropping in on anyone. but i understand you were making a general comment, more than one on this photo, just wanted to clear up those two things.

Yanbo you are way off track with that comment. Yep, I look like a muppet in the pic but that is the result of the board in between the shoulder blades. I have plenty of experience and can cut it at most breaks, (not suggesting I am a legend though) but your attitude is so off point. If you take that attitude with you into the water every time you surf then you are as bad as they come and don't deserve the respect or the wave. Do one, and stop making assumptions.

G unit missed the point mate. Red is the one who dropped in on the teabag and yet when the situation is the reverse he strikes out. If you dont like it don't do it, common sense. Red's tried to snake me many a time and dropped a few too, he paddles out with attitude and gives the stink eye to anyone who might take off deeper and claim priority on a wave he fancies. His attitude stinks, is greedy and unwelcome.

Pluto's avatar

Pluto Jun 5, 2009 Rating: 2

Lucky this isn't america...the booger would have a cap in his ass instead of a surfboard, Mr Red would have been pistol whipped by the cops (probably deserved though), as would the booger for good measure and they'd both have probably paid ten dollars just to step foot on the beach. With any luck though, their 2 mile to the gallon SUV's would be impounded, which might go an inch to saving the environment for the future of our children.

dont worry Luke, i dont think anyone is taking this pic too seriously. Dont let it put you off uploading in future ok mate? As far as drop-ins go, its the no.1 rule in surfing, anywhere. It is deigned to stop collisions and accidents, possible worse and it si the first rule any kook, or pro should adhere to. whatever happened in the photo - a drop in is lame, its simple. I was in cornwall, and got dropped in 3 times by joss Ash no less. Once, fair enough i woudl not have made the section and yes he rips and is way better than me, but its still SUPER GAY and i have no respect, or time for anyone who does it. particularly those who get to surf in indo 6 months eveyr year and have about 1 million more waves than i ever will!! BUT violence is NOT the option, EVER. this is supposed to be a fun sport, if you cant get through to somone dont lower yourself even further by hitting them for fucks sake people!!! Now then, as an opinionated git there are a few things that I could say about this!! But what I am going to say is this instead. Firstly, the photo was put on here with a aspect of humour and not to create a forum about who should get a kicking and why the police should be contacted. These guys offer up the time to take these pictures and therefore these pics should be respected, unless they consist of go-boaters or SUP's. I mean who wants to stand on the side of a pier photographing another shitty day at Bournemouth with 95 muppets generally creating a slalom wave. So my gratitude goes to these individuals. Secondly, the surfer in mind is a friend of mine. He is a good guy and loves to surf and just like all of us he has an issue. In this case it is simple, the issue with people dropping in on him. To be honest this can quite easily be justified as I too have this issue when surfing Bournemouth. Due to the amount of tertiary surfers we encounter at Bournemouth there seems to be a total lack of wave ethics or understanding. The majority of people do not understand the principle of priority and even when they think they have grasped the concept there is still confrontational situations where it has to be re-iterated........don't f??king drop in!!! So if for the greater good an individual has to be reminded then so be it. Now, without sounding like a condone a physical response (which I too have been guilty off doing and personally received) it sometimes takes an aggressive approach to get through to these people so they actually learn. Thirdly, at the end of the day if you are a WAVE-SKI RIDER so your opinion means jack squadadley Sh!t. So take your uncontrollable ability to handle waves good for nothing ass to a website for your own sport...... This website is for SURFERS (ok, that includes Spongers as well)!! So, if anyone should get there ass kicked it should be you, simply because you should be the scape go'b'oat for all the occasions I have had to duck dive those things or duck under a paddle. As for the police, I believe N.W.A expresses my thoughts on that.. Thank you for your time!!!

How come the guy has not been reported to the police or been given a serious kicking? To drop in on people is bad enough, punching people is a whole new level and just isnt acceptable, must admit its not something I have seen happen yet. I use the Playboat and the Waveski so sometimes do get the cold shoulder from the odd person in the water but have never had anyone be aggressive. If anything most people at both piers have been really freindly and talkative. Is there a proactive way of dealing with an issue like this?

Waveski-Rider's avatar

Waveski-Rider Jun 6, 2009 Rating: 1

Sorry, my mistake, I didnt make my original post very clear. What I meant is there have been punch ups down near Bournemouth at times and it just shouldnt happen, on or off the water. Would be a bit a bit extreme calling the Police for some one dropping in :-)

Guess I might as well chip in as I was the sponger dropped in on and stabbed literally in the back. Nice altercation thereafter but I reckon we saw eye to eye in the end, i.e I had priority, I called it, etc. No lasting damage done. Mr Red seemed fine to me, took a bit of convincing that he was in the wrong but we got there in the end. Seems to be getting a bad name though according to other comments so it makes me feel it wasn't such an accident????
