i cant understand why so many people are sat so far on the right when that is clearly reeling off from far off. maybe they've all had monster 20second right hand Rides and been dropped there, but i doubt it.

Was a good sesh militia - a bit odd as at one point there was me, a sponger, a kneeboarder and a kayak - right old mix up! Was best early on at dead low on the lefts off the bar. I'm gonna surf that mother more often!!!!

Militia Jul 5, 2009 Rating: 1

I took this shot just after I got out at 7 (in at 4.30am), before I swung round at the top of the cliff Path, Saw ya out there mate. Looked like it wasn't hitting the point quite right - but watched ya wait for the sets and snag the lefts - You were charging em n all. Some sick late drops eh? Looked a fair bit bigger at the point too. Was that Binns in with ya?

boona's avatar

boona Jul 5, 2009 Rating: 2

Joskin - they're waiting on the rip peak for the rights and odd left - rivermouths fast and sections out but still a sick wave - too busy that morn for me - surfed low tide point at chally with one other out - equally as sick!!

Coelacanth Jul 4, 2009 Rating: 2

At least you lucky bastards are getting some decent waves to fight over and have even more on the way. We haven't had anything rideable over here since last December! All the wind/wave energy in the north Atlantic has been going to you since then. It's not FAIR!!

Coelacanth's avatar

Coelacanth Jul 9, 2009 Rating: 1

Hey VP...or I should say...YOUR EXCELLENCY (since the Rolf Harris stuff)...I thought this string was history(ie over with). Don't remember any girls from accounts/December office parties OR Gentle Ben episodes. Doesn't mean I didn't get involved...just don't remember. You and Muenchklerr will just have to enjoy those memories together...in regards to Gentle Ben, I mean. You know what makes our lack of waves for soooooo looooong even worse. No, not the backwash off your harbour walls dig. Good one!! The Florida Gulf Coasters are gettin' waves!!! We get the Santa Anna-ish blast furnace west winds (air temp 101 deg. F in the shade) with never ending flatness and THEY get chest-high multiple day wind swell. Which makes them happier than pigs in shite. It's just doubly diddly NOT FAIR!! It's like SE Coasters there in England gettin' waves and no one else.

the vanity project Jul 9, 2009 Rating: 1

What can I say Coelocanth? It is a wave’s very reason for being, to be ridden stylishly and with grace by a surfer. That’s why swell pushes hard across the Atlantic racing towards our French, Irish and UK brothers (and sisters). If it stays over by you it will only be wasted on Sqirl!!!(love you really TreeRat) Don’t worry, there is always the backwash from our trusty harbour walls which with any luck might just make it back over to you ;-) P.S. “We haven't had anything rideable over here since last December” ….Christmas office party – the girl from accounts- ring any bells???

locals schmokals, gotta have 6 fingers 3 nipples and a hair lip to be a proper bantham local I reckon. was an awesome morning though if not a little crowded.

Jonty Tucker's avatar

Jonty Tucker Jul 4, 2009 Rating: 1

That Wed. am. was good, hitting the bank about right. Just a real shame it gets so crowded and so many waves go to waste because of complete incompetence. The locals are mellow, unless being given good reason not to be. Unfortunately, said reasons occur way too often on a daily basis. Anyways, I'm going for a surf.

Would you say if it almost goes without saying? and just how did you reply to the above comment 1hr 24mins before it was posted? Spooky! Quite right too this is a cracking shot of Bantham and most of us have missed the point, but heh we're all sitting in front of stupid machines so I guess we've all missed more than the point!!!!

Shorey's avatar

Shorey Jul 4, 2009 Rating: 0

Sorry man didnt know we had to comment on the quality of the waves, i thought we could discuss whatever we want, but I guess I was wrong. It would take a blind man not to see how good the waves are, it almost goes without saying wouldnt you say?

Shorey's avatar

Shorey Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 2

Locals shmocals, if you surf you are welcome, that is how it should be. Just leave your attitude in the car park. If you arent a regular then who the hell cares, as long as you show respect then whats the problem.

· sea soul ·'s avatar

· sea soul · Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 2

First of all, all of you guys that say about of being in the shoulder, obvioly you have no idea, second i bet most of you as lots of the so called locals wouldn't bloody be riding those tubes, as i saw it my self. i was there monday and wensday, there are only a handfull of guys how ride that wave as it should be and they know how they are, some could be a pain but, hey aren't most of the good surfers a pain? for all the other selfown called locals, first learn how to surf and respect and then talk...and me i don't concider myself a local even i lived quite close, but i did got some sick barrels and solid wipes too. rescpect the ocean and the old generation.

I dont touch Bantham with a bargepole in the summer I have had several rather expensive boards damaged there by "floating debris" from plymouth University that I tend to go to the quieter spots p.s. just because you live In Salcombe you dont own everything.

spongefreak's avatar

spongefreak Jul 4, 2009 Rating: 0

If you live in Salcombe you probably have enough money to own everything but don't know the difference :-)

ive heard that bantham has some quite bad rip currents... is that true?

jackneale's avatar

jackneale Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 2

there are bad rips somedays depending on the surf and how full the river is but if you no wher they go they work very much to your advantage when paddling out

Papa Chambo's avatar

Papa Chambo Jul 3, 2009 Rating: -3

There is another good peak where they are all waiting.....it was a real treat that day to get surf like that in the summer on the south coast......I think I missed that set though. PS slightly annoying comment 'pretty much all locals though'......what defines a 'local' at Bantham? or anywhere in Devon for that matter.

Jimathy's avatar

Jimathy Jul 5, 2009 Rating: 1

I am considerably more local than yaow! Get over it!!!

Militia's avatar

Militia Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 0

Yeah "busy but pretty much all locals - doesn't get much better" Means what it says. I cant think of better than 7.30am - epic surf and all your mates in with you. Ya just read it wrong. As for local - was born there - and have my two in the yard!

Papa Chambo's avatar

Papa Chambo Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 1

I think both your comments are fair enough there sponge and ferral. Point taken. Tend to keep myself to myself these days if not hooking up with a few old mates somewhere in north devon or the north east. I am not as negative as my comment sounds. I do nod, smile and give the odd whoop when paddling out to someone on a good one.....and it was a damn good day on Wednesday so its all good.x

Jimathy's avatar

Jimathy Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 2

What defines a 'local' at Bantham? 2 Generations in the graveyard.

spongefreak's avatar

spongefreak Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 1

Ferrals got it in a nutshell there, living in Bantham village would do it, and then there's Bigbury-on-sea, Bigbury village, Challabrough, Kingston ....and so on. Perhaps if you spent more time talking to the locals instead of just turning up and surfing on your meanderings around Devon Papa C you might learn not to put such dumb comments out there to be ridiculed. Hope you had a good surf that day by the way, I'm gutted I missed it.

ferral's avatar

ferral Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 0

what do you think defines a local, numbnuts? someone who lives nearby and surfs there all the time. there are plenty of bantham locals, and plenty of locals to other devon spots, same as anywhere else in the world. nothing like surfing when its just friendly faces in the water. why does it annoy you?

Why is the majority sat way over from the peak - is it too fast a barrel? Summit to do with the river rip? !!!!

Beautiful shot of the rivermouth, had some awesome barrels right there over the years, brings back sweet memories. When it's breaking good the locals own the peak

The rivermouth can close out but that looks sweet. It amazes me that the locals sit further to the left near the rocks when the rivermouth is firing. I've often been in at the rivermouth with just a couple of others getting some nice rights. Beautiful shot BTW.

Sock it em Inswana. Too many people take themselves far too seriously on this site. Papa Chambo that was a shameful climbdown above. These boys all bigging themselves up coz theyre local and they scored it. Big f#ckin wank. Militia what are you some kind of f#ckin surf Nazi?

Militia's avatar

Militia Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 1

Yeah Jack Kirby of South Devon Surf was in at the river, but when he got out he said the rip was 'all time' on the push. What time were you in?

jackneale's avatar

jackneale Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 2

there was another peak over by the rip. its just that at the time the set came in over by the rivermouth and not at the rip. there were some really nice rights at the rip and left at the rivermouth

Luke Gartside's avatar

Luke Gartside Jul 3, 2009 Rating: 1

haha even if they were just shoulder hopping, i reckon theyd need to be a bit closer to the peak than that.

Jimathy's avatar

They're not the locals. But yes those guys to the left are a load of shoulder hoping softies.
