Not so sure about electrolytes, more likely to be phytoplankton - interesting topic here = http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=phytoplankton&gwp=13 - so there's a good mouthful of the stuff in this picture for a filter feeder like the basking shark. Obviously, Mitch would be spat out to surf another day!!!

It looked a bit drab 'as shot' so I whacked up the colour saturation and got an interesting result!!
