Hi Guys Windguru archive recorded a swell of 4.5m @ 14 seconds the day this wave was surfed. Don't understand how a swell this "small" resulted in wave faces this big at this particular spot!! Also you'd expect photos of the nearby beaches on this day to be *giant* close outs but this is not really the case (http://www.lahinchsurfshop.com/lahinch/magico.asp?magpage=2&id=249875). What the hell is going on! PS. I'll never surf waves this big but curious!

>don't ya know windguru is useless Maybe, but it's the only site I'm aware of that archives swell data. Would be good if Magicseaweed could start doing the same... Separately, even allowing for the effect of the cliff angle, this looks much bigger than 20ft on the face!

you muppet, don't ya know windguru is useless, only to be used as a guide, the buoys were reading 19.5ft, which for your sake comes out at 6m, also the reef comes out of deep water so there's nothing to slow it down causing the wave to diminish in height

4.5m > 14.5 feet, so I'm thinking wave faces from that size up to 25 feet on the bigger sets, given the period. Is there a problem with this? I've never done, nor will I ever do, waves that big, so I'm not 100% sure. But the wave in the pic would seem to me to have maybe a 20ft face.

The only way to survive a wipeout on a wave like this is to curl up in a ball and stick your thumb into your anus. I even have a precut hole in my wetsuit for days when I wipeout at big Mavericks. SOmetimes I even lube up my finger before I go out. Each time I wipeout which is few, my finger is ready for the insertion.

on the duck dive topic....how deep would you be talking when trying to dive under a wave of this size...no guessing! only comment if you have been there and done it and therefore have first hand knowledge

tubequest Nov 2, 2009 Rating: 1

those guys are towing so by law they have to wear buoyancy vests...no duck diving's gonna help ya!!!

Mac Never Quite that size but I have ducked a few Vlarge bombs over the years. If you are in in front of the reef you normaly don't have to go that deep just past the trough depth of the wave will do it and save your energy for the rest of the set. On a wave like that we are still talking 15-20 ft mind you. If you are over the reef forget it even diving down 20ft+ and lying on the reef you can get sucked right up again and then you find out why you did all that free dyving in the summer. Not to look at fish, but to be around for another wave like that.

It is possible to duck dive but you have to go down DEEP and not come up in the middle. If you do you better hope you can hold your breath for a long long time.

Potjiekos's avatar

Potjiekos Nov 2, 2009 Rating: 1

wait how's that supposed to work? If you're leashed up it's just gonna pull your board and either drag you with it or snap board / leash

Baboon Barrels's avatar

Baboon Barrels Oct 28, 2009 Rating: 2

No, you don't duck dive these. if you're caught in front of one you throw your board and dive as deep as your lungs and ears would let you. Keep your eyes open and aim for the light patches...and remember.....relax ha ha

This is what i cannot understand, a cubic meter of water weighs a ton, how on earth can the human body survive wipeouts on days like this? I know there is final force VS passive force but seriously i'm almost positive i would die if that thing landed on me!?
