wasnt the reef meant to be in a V shape, with the tip facing out to sea? i thought that was the original design? wouldnt that produce an all round better and longer wave?
soo spongers get called speedhumps alot ay? well as a sponger for about 4 years i seem to do alot more running over knobhead arigant surfers thn they have ever done over me..final
thats about as final as the group stages, youve been bodyboarding for four year, must be impressed with yourself hey...is there any skill watsover to progress with ?
One question; Who is more likely to be doing all the dropping in? I think the answer is clear & the term speed-bump has unfortunately been all to accurate in my experience.. 98% of the time its cause to improve ability on the rails. 2% of the time its not such a bad day to ding the board.
That simply isn't true. Living out in Wales the last 3 years it was kook students learning to surf that did all the dropping in while more experienced body boarders took due care. It has nothing to do with what someone is riding and more often than not it's simply weather that person is experienced or not. Some people need to remember what wave riding is really about before we all get a bad reputation for being a bunch of judgemental dickheads.
Wow look at the comments on here I'm amazed at how negative everybody is. I rip on a sponge and a Shortboard quad all over the world and live in Southampton, different tools for different waves. Who cares?. Get a life and surf because that is ALL that matters . All this negative comments is not what surfing is about and really puts our spots in a bad light. If its good for the shops and tourists cool , i still need somewhere local to buy my suits and wax. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHOPS AND CREW!.
Where’s the love? Local authorities spent money on OUR sport! We’ll have to wait and see in the long term if it pays dividends however the creation of a NEW wave is something we should be “stoked” about considering every day waves are under threat of being lost.
Good call, any of the surfers that are criticizing it should at least apreciate that it will disipate the crowds down at the piers now there is a new spot. So if you don't like the reef at least be happy that there are going to be a few less people crowding the pier. I surf longboard but I've never met a wave too steep, you just have to be quicker or enjoy a good heavy wipe out. Anyone complaining needs to grow a pair! And all this surfer Vs body board stuff is pure BS. If you haven't got respect for other water users, grow up or get out. It's fine joking around about spongers and pole dancers, but people with serious issues need to leave them at home before getting in the sea!
All of you "surfer's" are mugging off bodyboarders but to be honest i do both . admittadly my skills arent quite there to be tube-ing it up on a shortie but yes longboards may struggle a bit. quit bitching and get a bodyboard. most people who "surf" boscombe are posers. i have seen very few shortboard riders get a decnt run. there are a couple and you know who you are . the rest fail trying. stop being haters and respect the waves whatever they are being ridden on.peace
get a surf mat too the best bit of wobbly hilarious fun I have in my quiver that packs down to nothing. If you see a nutter bouncing around on a red mat with the biggest grin, while no doubt the posers laugh, that`ll be me & do I give a toss about the detractors do I hell, as these things are so crazyily stupid & such fun & more gay than any gay on a tray, a gay on a mat, thats me, wicked!! Plus you get such a work out just trying to hang on, man up & get one everyone, we`ll be bouncing all over that reef!!!
hahah gazz mate i've seen ya out on that, it does indeed look like fun, if you ever feel like takin it out on the reef gimme a call as that would be a shot and half!
will do assuming yr serious of course. (No?) I have actually already messed around on it unnofficially ;-) b4 launch day. Believe it or not despite the crazy out of control look of them, there is quite a technique to them, but they really are FUN, you can`t help but laugh & for me thats gotta be worth all the strange looks of who`s this freak & you get to rest your board arms for a bit. My next mats gonna be a custom job, £250 of stupid custom rubbery fun, sweeeet
oh ...cool that was you i saw must have been 2 weeks ago i think...i couldnt stop smileing at u cos....u had this mental grin on ya face !!! (smileing is an addictive thing)....next time i see u i will say hi.
Give it a good winter then you haters will realise what your gunna be missing, this will be the best around for at least 100-150 miles so count yourselves lucky!!
Oh my god...its finally here.....and so worth the wait !!!!!!!!!!...will quickly send my cv off and look at local estate agents......wow i cant wait too move......or not :):) lol..........
WRONG...if you want to surf in one foot south coast wind driven mush or wait for however long to get this amazing very expensive reef ..not....thats your choice and so is living in boscombe all your life .......or move somewhere where there is surf !!! its not rocket science....
Then why go to Saunton and widemouth??Not for the challenging waves thats for sure! Fickle as they may be, i like the spots round here, Natural or non! Also gives me the motivation to travel when we do have the flat spells. We also have a LOT of good bodyboarders locally (not me) which must mean something for living in "fickle but good on its day" area!?
It's not too steep to surf, but I wouldn't want to drop in with that crowd of body boarders infront. I could do without a mass manslaughter charge from taking out a whole line up 'cause there was no way of carving round them all!
Not really dude, not at all actually. But maybe you should try standing up then you might realize that the vertical angle of a wave actually matters when you're trying to do something other than gut-slide to the bottom.
Why would I want to spend ages trying to stand up on a surf board, perfect the art of not looking like an ape taking a shit, then some more time eventually getting barrelled when I can pull tricks on my bodyboard that make most stand ups look like kooks and get barrelled more times in one day than you in a year?
i havn't been there but don't you reckon a good surfer should be able to get a few? the shot we all want to see is a standup getting slotted at the new reef!
this is the minimum swell that the reef works on, on bigger swells in the summer even before it was finished it was holding it shape and it was set for surfers, this sort of things is what bodyboarders are going to have to make the best of cause any decent day this is surfer foda
Wow, how many douche's post on this site, what a suprise there are a load of hating surfers, put it this way, any of you wannabe satndup's would have had no chance out there this day, I was out there and the only guy that went out on a stick came in with it in two pieces ha ha ha, don't slag the place off - man up and get out there and show all us "dick draggers" your skills.....
its too easy to go along with the media and criticise the reef, at the end of the day it has created something better than was there before and having destroyed southbourne with the beach replenishment 4 or 5 years ago the least the council could do was invest money into other surf related schemes.
As for the spongers; Bournemouth always has had a large sponging community up until Southbourne got ruined, now we all have something to play on again.
Maybe they are the only ones willing to give it a shot considering everyone is watching like hawks with fingers poised over shutters. Surfers probably afraid of wiping out, while BBs are just going for it.
JOG ON YOU LOSER STANDUPS,always slagging off us bodyboarders. We all do the same thing,we catch waves and enjoy the moment, the only thing different with us and standups is that we admire a decent wave being ridden by either a sponger or a standup, whereas alot of you just seem to forget the one thing we're all there to do.ENJOY THE SURF AND RESPECT EACH OTHER,WE'RE ALL HERE FOR A GOOD TIME REGRDLESS OF WHAT WE'RE RIDING ON.
Well said Dan, as I always try & remind the small minority of narrow minded idiots that would`nt dare be seen on anything other than a stand up the best surfer is the one having the most fun regardless of craft. I fully back this innovative scheme as I prefer to look at the much bigger picture of everything its doing now & for the future of my home town. Innovators will always get knocked by those that are simply not brave enough to try something new such as this potentially great Reef/Re-Development of good old Bos Vegas.
blimey. it actually works. shame no-one will ever get it to themselves. there must be 50 guys watching for the right conditions to make this work. how many million spent for a 3 times a year wave for 50 guys, 40 of which won't be able to get on it due to work commitments? should have just divvied up the millions between the remaining 10 work shy spongers, they could have bought a life times travel to hawaii, tahiti, indo and south oz with the money instead.
All the spongies know each other round here so share and share alike. People have been on it the last 3 days on the trot so it has already lived up to your expectations of three times a year. every time it breaks there's someone out there even when its tiny..SUP's, Goats, Kytes, Scoober....blah blah, its all good!
Biggest waste of money ever! Loads of reefs near by, £5 mill for something that'll work maybe 3 times a year, could have given it to charity. Saddens me the way money is so valuable and so often wasted on mindless expenditures
Unfortunately the media has cast a cloud over this inveestment that is sadly missed on most. The reef is dual purpose, it does more than just provide a rampy wave, it also manages the issue of moving sands towards Hengistbury and could potentially eliminate the need for a few groins that are costly to maintain. The reef has already built up sand all around and is creating a lagoon in front creating a safe zone for young swimmers and families. Not suggesting that £3m wouldn't do a lot for charity but I think Council Tax payers in the locality may grumble if their money is being "given away" rather than being invested in regenerating a run down, yet deserving area of the town.
yeah, for those who know Boscombe (i have lived here all my life), it has been a dramatic change for the surrounding area, the beach is now a pleasant place to be, less rubbish, less arseholes and haven't seen a syringe down there in months. The regeneration which is based around the reef has really made it a nicer place to be regardless of the surf it has produced. The council have indirectly helped a lot of people (yes i know, and themselves) with this project. It's given people opportunity as apposed to "band aid" style handouts.
I'd take old Boscombe back any day. 8 years ago we used to get classic storm swells, small crowds and locals only. I could drive to the Beach and check the surf from my car. Now it's full of cunts who wanna be...
Ay but theres no point on dwelling on the past, it started to get full of nobbies before the reef began. Just sport "progression" i suppose. Buy a branded tee, fund a kook!
I don’t think that will be producing any world class surfers / body boarders or increasing tourism greatly. Watch this space maybe….. keep the photos coming.
*Sigh*...missed it...was trekking around to a sheltered semi secret at the time when the wind changed (was blowing a hoooly in the morning) . We still scored but not like that!!!....
