Heyyyy...Captain Cook didn't bring the gift of surfing to the UK, ya know. In fact, the Hawaiians killed him and ATE him! If only he had chilled about that stolen boat and had not tried to take an elderly chief hostage to force it's return. That tends to piss off natives everywhere! They did return his few remains of course...out of respect! But it was we culturally sensitive, ever resourceful, always generous Americans who accepted the gift of surfing from our gracious Hawaiian brothers, tweaked it a little bit...and chose to share it with the rest of a sometimes forgetful world. He was an ethnic Irish-Hawaiian who recovered the ancient sport of Hawaiians from the cold grip of the Christian missionaries, sure(an Irishman?)! But doesn't his Huntington sponsored surfing to promote California tourism...and long work as a lifeguard in Redondo, California make him an American?
