Burton H Jan 18, 2010 Rating: -1

Well got to live out here for several years to know your right winds to make the right waves at certain spots like that spot which takes a stright NE to have the place work like it does. It takes a few years before you get it down by watching the weather channel like 24 hours a day and watch the different storm systems that come out of Canada and across the county. And like I said before the swell windows are super small so most of the time we see the waves build and then die through a period of sometimes 3 to 6 hours before it turns flat again. Yes you can surf on a lake but it takes a long time to get it right and at first expect to get skunked a lot because that's what also goes into being a lake surfer. Burton

I just went to check the saltfree link, and it sure looks cold in winter. Icicle beards etc, though there was 1 shot of someone in boardies (maybe Inuit lol), worth a look.

hmmmpff. Im surprised people in the states have the brains to figure out to surf in a lake. What is it, the 'superpower' of the world, and 25% percent of students drop out? The biggest consumer of cocaine and marijuana? Dumbest nation in the world.

Do us a favor (favour) and delete your initial post. That'll get rid of this whole unpleasant little thread. What could be cooler than surfing stoke 1000 miles from the nearest ocean? As to our perceived internal rot - look to your own shores while there's still time - and stay away from mega-corporate foods that corrode the body and mind. Resist authority. Distrust all politicians. Chill. Surf. That'll be $10, please.

Well wreenus why don't you use your far superior brain and think about what you would do if immigrants from all over the world came to your country and didn't speak english. Then had kids and sent them to and english speaking school. The US is a melting pot wreenus. Get your ignorant head out of your asshole.

All the surfs i've had when i've been gasping for a drink. Here all you have to do is stick your head under and suck away.awesum!Suppose you'd also need a thicker board with more float.

Surfing fresh water.. wow this is awesome.. Do the lakes have tides big enough to have an impact on the waves?

On Lake Michigan it has been recorded that the water dose move out like a tide but only a few inches that's about it an you cannot really tell. Thanks again for all the killer comments and yes you can surf on a lake with some decent waves. Burton www.nosaltsurf.com

Lake Superior is the size of a small ocean so it's not surpising they get waves at one end when there's wind at the other. I've seen two foot right handers peeling for 60m down the side of Loch Ness. I shit you not!

i don't even get that. gotta be a miscategorization. no way that is coming in off a fricking lake!

If you were plunked down on the shore of one of these you'd have no idea you weren't looking at the ocean without tasting the water. They're not really lakes - they're inland seas. There are thousands of tons of ships at their bottoms sunk in big storms over the last couple centuries.

love it, unsalted is one of my favourite surf videos, not for all the scenes of endless beauty like most commercial vids, but for the real stoke that it showed you can get up there and the dedication needed to score it

Are you sure this is the Great Lakes? Didn't I see you hiding in the bushes at Rocky Point Rights back in October?? Nah Nah!, what a great shot, I always knew thay had waves up there, but, not something you could sink your rail into....guess it was worth it getting up and traveling for it. Good call

Burton H's avatar

Burton H Jan 15, 2010 Rating: -1

Thanks guys for the cool comments and there are thousands of surf spots all over the Great Lakes which some will never be surfed due to the different winds you have to know in order to score the right breaks and the wind and swell windows are very short so you have to be on it. Lake Superior Lake Huron and Lake Michigan get as ocean like as you can get out here on the lakes. This photo that Mike Killion took was on October the 3rd 2009 of me and we got to the north shore of Lake Superior at like 3 in the morning after driving all night to score these good waves. Check out the deal on Transworld surf's website called Great Lakes Go Off, actually go to www.nosaltsurf.com on the home page at the bottom and click onto this picture and it will take you there again thanks for the cool comments and the lakes do go off just need to know your winds. Awesome. Almost surfed Huron once - too choppy - but I had 3 surf shops to choose from for renting a board to surf on a lake. It was over 300 miles to the opposite shore, so plenty of room for fetch.
