sushhh...this is the best kept secret in the area. it's so secret that last year it was on the bbc and itv!! it's fickle, very fickle. if you don't live local the chance of getting it working is slim - we mainly have big westerly winds which is why we all hide behind the piers! i checked the reef a couple of times that day as well - it was rubbish. on the same day when everything was breaking - even a new spot or two...reef is rubbish but may come good over time - if not then the coucil should add more sand and some picnic tables.

OK, without giving away any homeland security secrets... how did the new artifical reef go on Sat? It's hardly a secret spot is it? From a purely "scientific curiosity" kind of stance, can anyone give a verdict? Expensive pile of sand-filled sausages, or boon to the surfing community?

I think Luke's letting the side down a bit there. It was sick mate. So sick.

Funny you should mention wave pools. Bournemouth council have recetly purchased the old Imax cinema building on the seafront. Mmmmmmmmm! Surfers managed to persuade the council to build a reef, what about a campaign to get a wave pool on the seafront? It will bring in the tourist £ honest!!!!!!

Trident Feb 14, 2010 Rating: 1

Your comment suggests there IS a future for artificial reefs, which is more than a little depressing. Wave pools would be a wiser option surely? Trying to get something as complex as an open ocean to co-operate is like firing lead into the sun and hoping pure gold will somehow emerge. If any artificial reef anywhere ever worked, it would've been pure fluke, not a basis for mindless spending of taxpayers funds. Future technology by all means, but let's learn from mistakes, and Boscombe is clearly a glaring error. I hope I'm forced to eat humble pie some day, though I doubt it.

It's a shame there are so many people who just want to slag off new ideas and technologies and I wish the reef would/will work but the fact remains that you only need to look at MSW photos for all the other south coast spots to realise that it was firing that day! There is a comp there next month so let's hope that it can turn it on then. If not I fear for the future of artificial reefs in this country and I think there are some spots that are screaming for a decent artificial reef - Newquay bay for example.

Luke Gartside's avatar

it was rubbish all day, i checked it at several states of the tide.

davidar's avatar

davidar Feb 12, 2010 Rating: 0

I don't mean to be pessimistic but there are absolutely loads of photos from that weekend all along the coast but I haven't seen any of the reef, and it wasn't working that well when I drove past it! Who knows though? Maybe it was good at some stage of the tide and somebody will psot some pics.

Very Socialistic the way the Brits are happy to post the exact location and even directions to their breaks. What ever happened to the monarchy? Next time please include what tide it works best on so when I schedule my surfari to England I can be sure to get the goods.

davidar's avatar

davidar Feb 10, 2010 Rating: 0

Yeah we are good like that; directions, photos, tides! Next time your swinging by nip in for a cup of tea and some eats as well! As per previous comments this is hardly a secret spot but it would be nice if people didn't hand all this information out on a platter. Still it doesn't detract from the fact that this was a cracking photo and that was one hell of a day for the south coast of good old Blighty.

I cant believe that people are tripping out cos someone named this spot, yeah it's a great shot but i dont think people are gonna be considering Bournemouth for their surf holidays somehow!

haha that is a good point, i dont really know who i though was gunna be looking at this photo and making the trip ahah. Although was in the car park at the pier on saturday and the guy i was with was chatting to this guy, who asked why it was quieter than normal, the guy i was with replied it was because everyone had gone to kbay, to which guy replied oh im not from round here wheres that?-so there are still plenty of people who surf the piers who are 'not from round there' who dont know about it, and those are the kind of peolpe i reckon the locals would rather keep at the pier. And its not at all a secret spot, or even a low quay one, but it is the diamond in the rough ahaha

Never heard of anyone dying here, it was a joke. No offence meant to the family of the person who did die there, I had no idea.

Trident... is that your handle or preferred insertion tool... that bloke didn't die from actually surfing anyway, it was a something else, that i won't bring up on here as it is none of anyones business but him and his family's. It's poor form when you have to bring up someone else's misfortunes to make yourself out to be some sort of "hell charger" or whatever you are trying to do!?!

nelch's avatar

seriously, im not a local and have never been there, but you should always answer these questions "go look for it". Not only are you giving away the spot from people who worked hard to find it and suss it out, but your also depriving the people who don't know about it the excitement of finding a new spot for themselves.

greenbee's avatar

greenbee Feb 8, 2010 Rating: 1

yeah isn't that the shellshocks wave in the next bay? pretty average wave, photographs better then it rides. Plus bench was friggin gangbusters

Just to the right of The Bench, Kimmeridge Bay. It's no secret, but out of bounds as it's an artillery firing range. Where the guy's getting into the water is The Bench, accessible on weekends only, mostly. Stray ordnance are scary as hell, someone died last month taking one right on the head. Still, you have to suffer for your art or there's no point right.., or is that right point? Heh heh

Got to be last Saturday! It's not exactly that often we get waves on the South coast anywhere near that size. You think those cliffs must be 45-50ft high! Cracking photo!
