You don't even need a wristwatch when you surf before work here, because Big Ben is just right there, and a wind vane to boot. God Bless Robin Hood

That's a great shot. Beautiful wave, awesome setting you never see in the "New World". My only question is how many silly Brits get washed off that wall every year?

Trident's avatar

Trident Feb 14, 2010 Rating: 4

Judging by recent events at Half Moon Bay, it's not just silly Brits that get washed away by the ocean

Spongerdudette's avatar

Spongerdudette Feb 12, 2010 Rating: 2

True Tex I think that is the one of the main reasons people drown, also being ''brave'' or should I say stupid when they're drunk......real shame.

Tex's avatar

Tex Feb 11, 2010 Rating: 1

add a dog being swept into the mix and we seem to increase our stupidity a fair whack, seems to be an annual event that someone drowns trying to rescue a pooch

Spongerdudette Feb 10, 2010 Rating: 2

@Chris-UK Re read my comment as I didn't say NO ONE ever fell off or was drowned, I actually said very very few and if you put that into percentage of the population of the UK that is only a few. @ Knife On The Water...not amusing

Knife on Water's avatar

Knife on Water Feb 10, 2010 Rating: -2

Thanks for the validation, although the comment was intended to amuse not incite. In the Pacific NW we lose a few every now in then, mostly swept off the beach by "sneaker" waves, pinned by rolling timbers in the water, or stranded by the incoming tide. No walls to concentrate the clueless and feed them to Neptune, although it's not a bad idea. Darwinism knows no nationality. Oh, and we also get the occasional nip from the landlord.

That's not strictly true. In 36 years of living here I've yet to get through a year without a news story telling me about drowned (British) tourists who have no awareness of the water what-so-ever...

Seems like in most of the UK pics the surf looka cold, mean. and unforgiving.(kinda like my ex wife) A nod to you Britts for even going out in it. Sponger or standup, you have balls the size of grapefruit.(shrinkage notwithstanding) I always made it a rule never to enter water that was colder than my beer. I tried it in oregon and it took almost a year here in the desert before I saw my willy.

I used to surf all winter in a 3/2 convertile cause that's all i could afford (just writing that made me shiver, i must have been nuts). Used to drive there with the windows open to climatise myself. oh happy days. Cornwall rocks

Trident's avatar

Trident Feb 8, 2010 Rating: 0

West country is the closest thing to 'consistent' you're going to get in England (sorry to all you Cornish patriots, but let's just call it England this once), it's an El Nino year and Neptune is being generous. You're going to the wrong places dude. Get a car, a 5/3 (with hood), gloves and boots and ROCK N ROLL!! Aaarrrriiiiiight!!

Ogreeny's avatar

Ogreeny Feb 8, 2010 Rating: -2

Nah, we dont want him to man up. It's because of people like him i get some many uncrowded good surfs

CatEmpire's avatar

CatEmpire Feb 8, 2010 Rating: 1

Grovel fest? It's been pumping non-stop (if you've been at the right place) recently, and is showing no signs of letting up. As for the freezing cold, you just need to man up a little bit!

appleZac's avatar

appleZac Feb 8, 2010 Rating: 2

seems you either don’t go to the right places or actually never go out. That comment is plainly incorrect. look at the conditions and you can score. Just going down the local every time could mean a grovel fest for you where as a 20 min drive could change things dramatically.

Go into the local pubs and ask for 'Praah' and they'll tell you you're looking for 'Pray'.

Spongerdudette Feb 9, 2010 Rating: 0

Now we know but you beat me to Wikipedia there Andrew :D

Andrew's avatar

Andrew Feb 9, 2010 Rating: 1

It's pronounced pray and is the ancient Cornish word meaning "hag's" or "witch's cove".

Spongerdudette's avatar

Spongerdudette Feb 9, 2010 Rating: 2

I thought that it was Pr aah as well Trident maybe VP could help out here. But gotta say Cornwall isn't the west country it's southwest....sorry just had to say that being a west country girl :)

Trident's avatar

Trident Feb 9, 2010 Rating: -2

I assumed it's Pr aah, maybe we should take a poll with the Cornish and see what surfaces. Cmon then southies, post your take on it if you please.

Will's avatar

Will Feb 9, 2010 Rating: 1

Maybe I should just surf it to form my own opinion ;)

jethro's avatar

jethro Feb 9, 2010 Rating: 1

Or is it?!! I must have had so many arguments over whether it's praah or pray. It seems even the proper cornish can't decide! I'm going with pray though.
