That particular break isn't New Pier but it's close by and a lot of fun to surf with the right swell direction. And as for all the "temperament" talk there are very few days in Durbz that actually require wetsuits... even then I've always found it helps more for performance and comfort especially in a longer session, but it's never a matter of survival in this town. What a hard time we have in the sub tropics ;)

No disrespect intended, but I disrespect all of your views concerning the matters of transvals, capricorns, huskys, french clowns, and esspecially replacements.

Thats the spirit Pots. And local knowledge, customs and tips are always welcome by this insect. Even if I never make it to the destination, in my head I can

Hahaha bad day in the office boys. Still surprised there weren't more guys out at "New Pier" in spite of the conditions but I bet that fella wasn't complaining. Ah fk it all what am I arguing about, great picture of how the home break can get. Welcome to Durbs anytime.

Hey Soutie, you certainly have a way of making new friends. I think you've found your new shorey replacement. lol. (squirel says hello to everyone)
spinsurfer Mar 1, 2010 Rating: -1
Hey Soutie, one of your biggest fans..I was just giving Potjekos a little grief about telling me where I took my own pic..Cheers
soutie Mar 1, 2010 Rating: 0
and no disrespect to you but i would just like to add that that wave is south of the Tropic Of Capricorn and north of the South Pole.
spinsurfer Mar 1, 2010 Rating: 2
Yo Bru, no disrespect to your local knowledge, but I was born in Durban and have been surfing there since 73 and one of the original Wedge/Dairy boys..That wave is on the north side of the pier between North Beach and New Pier..There was no crowd that day because the bomb sets were mostly solid 8 ft closeouts..Ended up breaking my board and ended watching and shooting from the North Pier for the rest of the session.
soutie Mar 1, 2010 Rating: 1
correct about the sub tropics, i was merely pointing out that the Tropic of Capricorn runs through the old Northern Transvaal, far North of Durbs.
soutie Mar 1, 2010 Rating: 2
and why does everyone think we sit here shivering, pining for home ? best thing i ever did was leave the sa (on a personal note, not wanting to start some sort of political debate).
soutie Mar 1, 2010 Rating: 0
i stand corrected on the geography rubbish. whatever i may long for, i am spoiled for surf, and i get in often enough, although there is never enough time is there Potroast ?
Potjiekos Mar 1, 2010 Rating: -1
Definitely way outside it to the south of New Pier judging by the angle - in which case the spot is locally known as Wedge beach, easily distinguished from the New Pier break because there's a lot less traffic at this spot than on the North face of New Pier (takes a little more effort to paddle out to the Wedge breaks but the rewards, clearly, are there to be reaped). But anyway thanks guys for educating me about my own home break!

Soutie, for managing to blog your way through life and comment on every MSW surf photo ever uploaded (as opposed to actually surfing), Admin has decided to punish you with a full scholarship back to school so you can look up where the bloody SUB tropics are! But congratulations for at least remembering Limpopo province's former name, I'm guessing you're a shivering cold saffer longing for a sunburn again?
soutpeel Feb 26, 2010 Rating: -1
Actually that's why the shot is deceiving. It was breaking about 40 yards outside the pier that's why it's not in the pic. Sets were about 8 ft with a few bigger bombs
spinsurfer Feb 26, 2010 Rating: 1
It is definitely New Pier. Shot was taken from the North Beach pier looking south right at New Pier. I just cropped it..

jrat Feb 25, 2010 Rating: -1
this place looks ridiculously fun. make it all the way through to the inside section and you get a nice little reverse bowl to top it off. couldn't ask for anything more!
pitmonkey Feb 24, 2010 Rating: 1
Knowing Durban, water still in upper teens, and look at that corker behind, schweeeeet! Ho hum, mustn't grumble. Nice shot.
Fluid Motion Feb 27, 2010 Rating: 1
yeah spinsurfer, if a wetsuit tan's your thing of course - not the coolest look on the beach bru lol

yeah spinsurfer, if a wetsuit tan's your thing of course. Not the coolest look on the beach lol. Nice shot bru. Is this Southbeach?
Fluid Motion Feb 26, 2010 Rating: 0
If you want a wetsuit tan of course, not the coolest look on the beach bru
soutie Feb 26, 2010 Rating: 1
sorry, what am i saying, decimal places. you dont do decimal. okay, roughly nine and thirteen fifteenths degrees Celsius
spinsurfer Feb 26, 2010 Rating: -1
Uh..back to the subject at hand..Water was shorty 2mm wetsuit comfortable and a decent tan could easily be had the day the shot was taken
Wavey Dave Feb 26, 2010 Rating: 2
Whoooa time is timeless? that's jus 2 much confusement for my one track mind. what's a increment, and who's Kalvin when he's not surfin?
Peanutball Feb 26, 2010 Rating: 2
If someone tells me it's 18c, I don't give a monkey's (sorry primates) if it's actually 20 or 16, I've got the general picture. I'm not down at the waters edge with my thermometer going, "Oooooh, it's out by 0.3234 recurring today!" Context dude.., context!
soutie Feb 25, 2010 Rating: 2
true, thats why i always quote the water temperature to 2 decimal places. here, for example, its about 9.76 degrees C at the moment.
westmonster Feb 25, 2010 Rating: -1
No not purely relative. A five degree difference in Fahrenheit can be significant in a demonstrative way, however Celsius hardly acknowledges the incremental change. In other words 1 degree of celcius represents a range of Fahrenheit increments.
pitmonkey Feb 25, 2010 Rating: 4
Sorry brother, but that's pure eeerm.., bollox, as we say in Blighty. All measurement is relative. Time is timeless, degrees are only increments of perception, and it's all down to what you're used to. If you want to talk about accuracy, we should be really scientific and talk in Kalvin, or other such highbrow nonsense. You say tomayto, I say tomaarto, know what I mean?
westmonster Feb 24, 2010 Rating: 1
I'll admit the metric system is superior to our way of measurement in almost every way, however Celsius versus Fahrenheit -theres no comparison. Celsius is not nearly as accurate, the difference between degrees is massive in relation to farenheit.

Tell me about it. Now that the snow finally melted...we are expecting another foot tonight!
westmonster Feb 24, 2010 Rating: 1
Yeah man I've been spending time in Maryland and I'm fookin sick of the damn snow, this is beyond ridiculous. We've gotten more snow (by far) this winter than in any other winter on record. It beyond crazy.
potato-head assasination Feb 24, 2010 Rating: -1
More snow to come my man. Swell today, but frickin messy
spinsurfer Feb 24, 2010 Rating: 1
tell me about it...Sitting in New Jersey with 2 foot of snow on the beach, freezing water and kak waves..Will be back there in June
