I thought when there are dolphins there are no sharks? Dont dolphins usually gang up and keep the sharks away?

Byron Bay is full of dolphins and they come quite close to you. First time I saw them swimming up, I was a bit unerved as the bay was once used as a dumping ground for hog butchering opperations and was a haven for sharks. Thankfully all they did was swim up and smirk and snikker over my borrowed foamie longboard. Had they drew attenton to me with their anoying laugh, I just don't know what I would have done.

@ VP just loved your little ''experiment''. @ Mr Chiggles thinking about it the programme that I watched was actually based around the South African coastline so you do have a point. But if I was out in waters where there could be sharks, I would feel just very slightly safer knowing that there were some dolphins around to either alert me to them being there or giving me some possible protection :)

Ratbag's avatar

Ratbag Mar 8, 2010 Rating: -1

With dolphins around shark danger is minimal??? You say what! I guess you watched too much Flipper as a kid cos sharks follow dolphins. Of course, dolphins don't like their company, but don't let that urban myth woo you into a false sense of security. If you see a shark you should think yourself lucky. It is the shark you don't see that will chomp on you.

Tex's avatar

Thank you, vanity. I was just hoping I knew what I was talking about, but now I know that even when I didn't know if I knew, I actually knew, and just didn't know for sure if I knew, and, as I say, I now know I did know. Great Whites suck. And a dolphin attacking a Porsche ... if there's film, please share the link.

the vanity project's avatar

the vanity project Mar 7, 2010 Rating: 4

Yes yes, its all very convincing, lots of telly based anecdotes that you have brought to the table, well done. But if it pleases the court I have convincing new evidence in favour of our mammalian cousins: When I was younger I had a keyring with a shark on it and a keyring with a dolphin on it, I dropped them both from a multi storey car park roof and when I retrieved them the shark had smashed on the pavement, so it stands to reason, dolphins are way harder than sharks. Judge Harvey, your ruling please? ….P.S….. oh I should add that the dolphin didn’t actually land on the pavement but embedded itself into the vinyl roof of a Porsche convertible. So while my experiment may lose credibility in the scientific community I think we can safely say that everyone was satisfied with the result.

Mr. Chiggles's avatar

Mr. Chiggles Mar 7, 2010 Rating: 0

Contrary to popular belief sharks are actually fairly intelligent. Dolphins are smart yes but hey they are only as smart as a five year old child or so. Oh another thing. The only time dolphins will only ever attack a shark is when the shark will attack their young or the shark gives them another provocation, otherwise they will leave them alone. @Spongerdudette, the only kill I know that sharks and dolphins share are fish, and if I remember right there is a time at False Bay annually where both dolphins and sharks share the fish and the dolphins do not "show is in charge" to the sharks. Amazingly the seals, seagulls also join in this little frenzy and nothing other than the fish get eaten.

soutie's avatar

soutie Mar 7, 2010 Rating: 1

rubbish burnadette, i have a thumb the size of your brain. i saw an episode where Flipper saves Porter Ricks from a marauding pack of great whites in a feeding frenzy. case closed.

7's avatar

7 Mar 7, 2010 Rating: -1

Burner, yes, great whites are big, but they have a brain the size of your thumb, while a dolphin's brain is the size of ours, and they rove in packs. Killer whales (dolphin cousins) have been seen attacking and eating a huge great white off California. A great white is no match for intelligent pack behavior, and they will not mess with a pack of dolphins, although they'll attack and eat solitary dolphins. http://www.ultimate-animals.com/articles/Sharks-Eat-Dolphins.htm

IceCreamHead's avatar

IceCreamHead Mar 7, 2010 Rating: 0

Yeah, I saw a programme about some family swimming somewhere in Australia, a school of dolphins kept circling them for ages, they couldn't understand why at first, until they saw the huge shark fin some distance off, the dolphins were protecting them

Spongerdudette's avatar

Spongerdudette Mar 7, 2010 Rating: -4

No disrespect meant here Burner but are you sure about that. Coz I watched recently a natural world show about fish/mammals journey. And in one part they showed some dolphins hunting for food but some Great Whites were going in for the same kill as well. Basically the dolphins showed the sharks who was in charge and the sharks went off. So it makes me think that you're safe when dolphins are around.

the closest I've ever been to dolphins surfing was about 40ft.. but, there were manatees close to me a few days ago! it was cool :)

7's avatar

7 Mar 7, 2010 Rating: 1

Had them swim within feet of me in California. Definitely cool, but given they each have about 4 times my body mass, and the ocean is their element, and they're wild animals, it's cool in a sort of "whoa" kind of way. Still, as long as they're around, shark danger is minimal.
