simply a GREAT picture capturing so many aspects from water movement to "the glorious moment before impact" and everything between. Capturing the other photo man in the foreground gives the picture almost a 3d feel for me putting the water movement in perspective. I feel like I am there. I feel like I have sand in my shorts. Go well on the wall right next to any great surf shots. Ironically I am a big fan of classic 70's surf pics due to way they capture surfing and like so anyone that regards themself a waterman (or waterwoman mel and spongedudette ;)) regardless of the equipment they use or even dont use (bodywhompers)will appreciate this pic I think. Well done carpet +5

call me crazy but this shot give me an idea for MSW. All i need is.... 1- blow up whale, 1 set of flippers, 2 awesome watermen to capture the momment at this break!!!!! I know i will probably get bashed by some kook calling me out for doing this but to be honest i dont care.

Something the Bodyboard haters should have a read of...... "Most surfers don't surf shorebreaks and crazy slabs. Shooting bodyboarding is way harder because the waves are heavier. When I shoot with surfers they want to look for good waves that are surfable, not death. When I used to shoot with bodyboarders they were looking for death slabs and the craziest wedges." - Surfing magazine's Jeff Flindt ...... http://espn.go.com/action/surfing/news/story?page=body-on-a-boogie

SABREDOG's avatar

SABREDOG Mar 28, 2010 Rating: 0

dont run before you can walk. havnt got anything against body boarding, but it is alot easier to take off and surf mutant waves on a bodyboard. reason body boarders find all these waves first is because they are best waves for bodyboards, not stand ups, and if they are surfable the stand ups try to surf them aswel.

Sneakybadger 's avatar

Sneakybadger Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 0

In response to stylin mike: I think you do have a small point but it is not as clear cut as that. I think it is highly dependent on conditions and the bodyboarders in question... Eg, if your home break is overhead but slow and crumbly then stand up riders do generally have the edge over bodyboarders (DK not included in this scenario) and could be considered better to watch. However, if you flip the situation and that head high surf is top to bottom breaking in a foot of water then the bodyboarders own the session and the stand up's generally become more careful (Looking for the slower take offs and avoiding the crazy double ups). In this situation it is us falling head first into almost certain oblivion, getting mashed up and coming up laughing about it. This is why the curling comparison doesn't work as we as wave riders have a dynamic playing field not a uniform patch of water that is the same every day. Carpe wave: That Shark Island section is awesome!!

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 1

There's two Gas Chambers. One on the North Shore and one at Sandy's. Log Cabins is the next beach East of Ke Iki's. Gas Chambers is 3 breaks East of Pipeline. Here's a surf map for ya to check out: http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/North_America/USA/Hawaii/Oahu/map/map_-surf-spots-oahu.gif

dangalow's avatar

dangalow Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 0

So that's where Gas Chambers is!!!! I always read about that place, and logg cabins being on fire, but no one willing to ride it..LOL ur not a vagina when it comes to the shore break bro....can't wait to see what else is up ur sleeves....never just a good wave photo...ur shots go beyond, and thanks for being one of the photogs that respond to people...! It's always quality Carpe, gotta go wash my hands now with all the ball tickling ur getting from me...!+5 bro ham!:)

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 1

Yeah, Sandy's is nuts! Sandy's is known for always having waves. The whole beach is body surfing or body boarding only (while the lifeguards are on duty). Half Point is a reef break that slabs right and left over an extremely shallow reef. It can get very makeable and will spit on good days. Most days the wind is funneled off shore by a nearby mountain. They call one of the rocks there Sashimi Rock because it makes sashimi of people that hit it. The rest of the beach is sand and has three main areas....Pipe Littles, Middles, and Gas Chambers. All these are comparable with heavy shoreys. I'll have to post some photos up here from Sandy's.

dangalow's avatar

dangalow Mar 27, 2010 Rating: -1

Damn...if I weren't at work, I'd be able to get utube.... now come to think about it, I think JOB pulled off the rodeo also....my parents use to live in Sandy, u ever get out there much Carpe...my pops had sand removed from ears in the 70's bodysurfing there...and he said that at sandys there's no surfing allowed, BB only, and the locals didn't play when the rules got broke? He's so sarcastic, I can't tell when he jokes..but he swears to it...?

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 2

I think that there are more and more surfers doing the rodeo flip. But you're right it all started with the ARS. Here's a video of Shark Island in 2001 for all of you that do enjoy watching body boarders. There are some insane waves on this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ7dTPaA6w0&feature=related

dangalow's avatar

dangalow Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 0

Ohh yeah, dynamics....Jordy Smith is the only surfer that I know of that has pulled off a ARS...which for some reason, he called it a rodeo? But when he did it and all the hype happened, it was bodyboarding everyone compared it to.

dangalow's avatar

dangalow Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 1

LOL hahaha! MMA to hugging...I personaly like the fact that we are the underground of wave riding, and to compare the 2 in display...but come to that conclusion? His beach most have some sorry ass shredders for BB's, but if he was with u during this session carpe, he would buy the a4 to never forget the illest session he has ever seen in his life....then frame and hang over his bed to replace the use of viagra..

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 2

Comparing body boarding to curling is like comparing MMA to hugging. Mike where have you watched body boarders ride?

stylin mike's avatar

stylin mike Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 0

I'd say that the reason it's so hard to make a living out of bodyboarding is that it just isn't as fun to watch as stand-up surfing. It's not nearly as dynamic. And you have to remember that the vast majority of the money is coming from people who don't do any kind of surfing, and therefor can't appreciate the levels of difficulty and danger that are inherent to these sports. That's the reason there's no money in curling, either.

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Mar 26, 2010 Rating: 1

When this article first came out it was being posted a lot by all the body boarders. Great article! I reposted it for all to see too. Every step to return respect to body boarding matters. Maybe in the information age we can provide body boarders with the respect they deserve. Sponsors will start to sponsor them more and more. Cash prizes will increase at contests, and maybe body boarders will again be able to make a living off being a pro body boarder. I sincerely hope this is the direction the industry goes.

It is unfortunate that the industry only supports a handful of body boarders. They are pushing the envelope of what's possible, and dropping into huge slabs all over the globe that most surfers won't even go for. I have so much respect for body boarders after living here. I hope that eventually everyone in the surf world will treat everyone in the water the same. We're all just out there to have fun no matter what board we're on!

Yeah, I think that Spring suits are the only wetsuits I've seen used for surfing in HI.

stylin mike's avatar

stylin mike Mar 27, 2010 Rating: 1

Oh, my bad. Should've looked closer. I can't imagine wearing a wetsuit at any break in Hawaii ever, though. I hate wetsuits. I only wear mine out of necessity since the water where I'm from never really gets above about 55 degrees or so.

Sneakybadger 's avatar

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Mar 25, 2010 Rating: 1

Absolutely right Badger. I personally prefer a long sleeve rash guard too. Not only do I not need sunscreen in those areas, but when you're rolling around the in the shore break, you can get road rash pretty easily by grinding across the sand. I'm sure all the strawberries I get would be a lot worse without my trusty rash guard! Hey Mike, this is not Pipe and yeah, it probably was around 73 F. When you're acclimated to Hawaii weather, when you're approaching 70 F and below temps, that's coooold on Oahu. haha

Respect to all of you, and the photographers that push the limits to get these shots. Respect even to the tourists with no fins who see what you're doing and want to do the same, because in the end, you all come out of the water with the same smile on your face. And will someone please tell me what the hell a goat boat is?

CaptainGoodVibes-SuperPig's avatar

CaptainGoodVibes-SuperPig Mar 26, 2010 Rating: -1

So true SneakyBad. Surfin`s been around for some time and many stages. On our best days, we are the best ever, whatever we ride. Groms know it all and mostly know nothing (like teenagers of course). Locals own their spot. Longboarders catch all the waves. And old geezers have never had any waves worth talking about. The truth is we love it and would be lost without it - the water that is.

CarpeWave's avatar

Come to Ke Iki's. I'll shoot you dropping in here on your standup board and then post it on here for you. I'm sure it'll come out so much better than this. You can do much better than Spencer Skipper huh? Because all stand-ups are better than best body boarders right? What a joke. Your ignorant, narrow view of the surf world is what perpetuates the stupid, misplaced stereotypes that are within the industry. I really hope that someday opinions like yours will be shifted to respect body boarders as just another wave rider. I'm not saying that you should respect tourists with a foamy board and no fins. Real body boarders deserve just as much respect as any surfer.
