Grew up surfing in N.Wales around Tywyn on the west coast. Moved to N. Cornwall for better waves. Now living in Auckland and I'm bloody well staying! NZ has to be one of the best kept secrets in the surfing world. Warm water, still 20'c and it's autumn here now, Amazing surf, Uncrowded. Surfed Piha yesterday, still in boardies, 2-3ft offshore, the smallest it's been in months on the west coast. Heading up the Coromandel peninsular for easter break.(Looks like Thailand but with surf).Having spent so many years in the brown lumpy stuff I'm frothing like a grom again. NZ just Goes OFF!

Typo correction- make that 'the close proximity of "Sellafield" not "Seafield" which sounds like a quote pleasant place haha........
moodyedge Mar 31, 2010 Rating: -1
i only live 500 yards from a beach...but due to that little lump called ireland I get sod all in the form of waves ha haaar....not funny really.........if the winds howling you get 3 foot brown crappers :-( . but that aint rideable surf. oh and the close proximity of seafield also is there too just added fun....theres a few guys i made contact through a newquay surf forum once, who surf in south cumbria and were talking about heading up this end when the wind is right...but..i just dont trust the water at al.that nice brown tinge just dont luk inviting..i actually went in once on a short board....wasnt worth getting your hair wet for...but it was some paddle practice if nothing else :-) its just storm sea mush. Roll on sept when I can get down to the west country and get in the atlantic for some water therapy. That nice long left at crantock is awsum...hada blast there last sept. If I could get a job as a carpenter here which is what im qualified as, I can do that for a few years and then get the papers filed for australia. thats the plan now.but i cant even get a job up here doing that....or waves ! oh and the total lack of musicians who are into anyting other than indie is brown icing on a poo cake haha. Gota be some clutch fans here somewhere here who play bass and drums. .... it stinks. Ive grown to hate this place. anyways.....Cornwall is like a diff country down there, which is why I love it so much but unless I wake up a millionare one day very soon...I cant afford to live down there..its daft. kawabummer

My first ever surf was at Piha, I feel your pain too. The crazy river at Sheffields Ponds Forge swimming baths just doesn't cut it! Northumberland is my tonic.
KIMBALINOS Mar 30, 2010 Rating: -1
I'm hearing you man!! I ride a shorty (not very well)LOL but as long as your in the water and loving it, it dont matter!!!cwmbria, shudder!! I live 2 min from beach wouldn't, couldn't have it any other way!!!! anyway feeling your pain man!!!

Oh and this isnt contributing the the whole shortboard/longboarders hate piffle. It is just an opinion. Ive got a shortboard and although its fast as hell and light, having a longboard just suits me way better. Maybe Im just lazy haha. Surfing is surfing, thers many ways to do it, lying down on a board, with no board, longboard, shortboard...its all surfing and its all kool...I guess you choose your weapon and have a blast any way you can. I know one thing all surfers will share which is knowing theres nothing quite like it on earth. That is self evident. Shame my van died a while back because now I cant get to tynemouth :-( Warning to all surfers, DONT move to Cumbria if you like waves or playing in bands with other musicians because theres none of either worth talking about.
moodyedge Mar 30, 2010 Rating: -3
Arhhh man I need to move (from here in Cumbria) to somewhere hot and wavey.I agree with the small wave thing. I dont get to surf much..2 weeks a year in cornwall which sucks (not cornwall, thje fact i get in the water for only two weeks a year) Its enough to drive me almost insane. The first time I tried surfing was in New zealand and I will never forget it. Ive got a longboard now so to me 2-3ft crystal clean waves is paradise, that way I can learn more about boardriding and get a feel for it without picking fibreglass out the back of my head and getting slammed by a big fin. I find the whole shortboard thing just boring, some might say well thats because you cant do it, if thats what you wana say then kool. Competition riding especially when I watch that its so boring, the same 10 moves over and over with a few variations. i can appreciate the amazing skill etc etc, but give me a small clean wave and a longboard anyday
