Friend and I had this same experience at a place called Jongensfontein on the South Coast, Western Cape, South Africa around 1982. 100m of flat water to retreat from reef to rocks and the shark 10m away. Speedy Gonzales reeevaa riva riva handelay paddle action with a long brown streak.....counted toes and fingers after that for the first time.

Nevermind the 100lb thresher in yorkshire trapped in salmon nets. Gte a grip they aint gonna eat you in this part of the world.

trust me, when the baitfish are runnin' in south florida, you would spend way more time photoshopping this shot than you would actually going out and snapping the real thing. not a single surfer/fisherman in south florida would have any reason to question the authenticity of this photograph. as we say down here, "little waves, big fish!" it ain't ideal but we work with what we got.

Spongerdudette, that's a 5ft plus spinner/black tip shark (which is not small). When those guy's are feeding, they easily jump out of the water about 2-3 feet high out of the water chomping on there bait in the middle of the air! When that's happening close to me I keep my feet/hands out of the water and keeep still. But when you see the BULLS, you definitely GET OUT!

I've photoshopped a few things in my time and this one looks ok to me.... I think the wake (or lack thereof) looks perfect, and most importantly, why the funk would you bother? It bothers me when people harp on about the whole photoshop thing, it is gay. In fact, i feel i have to paraphrase Lee Macks opinion on these people: GAY PEOPLE ARE......... DISGUSTING.

James C's avatar

This past winter has been one of the wortst years for sharks do to the unusual colder water temperatures due to El Nino. In the month's of Feb and March there have been big spinners, BIG BULLS, Tigers and beleive it or not, alot of juvenille great whites. There have been day's in RR this winter where 6ft+ bulls were swimming 10 ft from shore south of the wall in RR. There were day's that it was head high perfection and no one out. Which never happens in Florida. This winter the water clarity has been amazing. and some days it doesn't look real. Nice shot!

Well you have to take into consideration that its florida so that camera is probably on like x4 zoom cause that wave is way to big... so the sharks probably only like 2-3ft. It takes more bigger than that to take me down, i refuse to lose a limb to less than a 5ft

Oh come on! there are mistakes all overthe shop! look at the trail of water comeing from the sharks fin and how angular it is the tip is slicing through with no wake? and the shark is swimming at a tilted angle. the wave is really patchy too and the ripples on the shark look photoshoped to hell! i may be wrong! but this smells fishy.

boombox's avatar

boombox Apr 12, 2010 Rating: 0

If you have surfed in the water with sharks before this comes as no suprise, its real, 100%. This happens everyday in florida, people have been bitten during contests down at new symrna. How this has been faked i have no idea, I use photoshop as a job and you cant just put a shark inside of a wave like that and make it look real.

Dude there are so many sharks in the water here along the FL coast. We see them all the time. It no joke. Just try no to spend too much time floating in the water off your board is all you can do. Keep moving and don't let your feet dangle too much. Thats a real shark. If you don't believe it, come and spend a season and you'll figure it out real quick.

I've seen you in the water at the pier neck deep, you've got guts. We saw a big bull swirling around the line-up (bastards were chumming the pier) and we didn't even wanna dangle our feet!

LMAO!! A seal launched itself out the water near me not so long back, I did not see what it was at first, convinced myself it was the largest Tommy seen off the British coast. Went through the water like a Torpedo, stood on the beach and looked. The little bastard was laughing at me ... I swear he was!

nice pic! love the contrast of temptation/danger. looks like this bad boy is just waiting for you. at last, covering up yourself with 5 mm of rubber doesn't appear so bad anymore since we don't get that kind of issues in Scotland (touch wood..). maybe that's why i like that pic, hehe..
