From what I can see in this beautiful piece of da vincian art, he's dropped in to the right and slipped trying to angle for a turn or to correct his footing, not falling towards the rock, but kind of floating with his right-turning momentum carrying him over it, gracefully contemplating the sensation of the next few seconds, and probably most bummed he didn't get to the next section.
