I obsessed about this wave (after downloading it from Surfer mag) wanting to know more about it. Low and behold, it is where I often surfed (Canto do Recreio dos Bandeirantes) when I lived in Rio...

They are plugging their pousada in Recreio. Also, isn't Recreio a beachie at the end of Barra? I know Macumba has rocks at both ends but Recreio would be a right if it was off the rocks.Leme is definitely a left and has this type of wave when it breaks. Must have been a massive swell.

bert Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 1

Either Leme or Recreio -- whatever. It is Rio and I lived/surfed there (btw I lived in Copacabana, very near Leme, so it feels like home too). Not sure why you trust the comment though (and did not trust the location);

39's avatar

39 Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 1

It says Leme, which is downtown, nowhere near Recreio or Macumba. It's been stuck under Recreio because some punters are shamelessly plugging their surf school/pousada using other folks fotos.

I will probably have one of the last says on this photo and will end it off by saying Awesome shot! It looks like a lot of fun without too much danger.

39's avatar

39 Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 2

Ha, ha, I see where you are coming from.In fact those refractions off the lages do give you a push in but that one is about to turn inside out big time.Pauba is probably the most consistent of these types of waves in Brazil.

Brod The Magnificent's avatar

Brod The Magnificent Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 1

Good comment 39, and I am then mistaken and based my opinion entirely on the gently crumbling lip, thereby giving a surfer time to launch at leisure. It is an unusual wave.

39's avatar

39 Apr 15, 2010 Rating: 2

Brod , you must obviously regualarly surf Dungeons at night on a 6'3 with some bait fish tied to your leash to consider that wave not dangerous, or you are twelve years old and talking shite :0

There's a wave in Maine (MSW id 121521) that's very similar to this, but smaller. You've got cliffs to the side reflecting waves that then travel sideways and cause these peaks to jack up.

It looks like one of the smaller foreground waves from Hokusai’s Great Wave painting. I always thought that he used a fair old dose of artistic license to make it look more dramatic, waves just don’t look like that. Pleased to have been given an education today, thanks for sharing.

As a mad sponger, i'd be thinking three more strokes up the face. Spin it right. Wait for the side wall to hit, then straight down the face and hand on for a serious left turn, before the lights go out. Can't belive no one caught a wave. Looks like real genuine fun, wish I was there.

i didnt surf this break so i cant say for sure. I doubt that its gonna throw until it hits the boil. but the side wave may be coming fast I guess. i hit saquarema, north of rio in brazil and it was epic.. not super powerful but nice and clean, semi crowded. 4 months in South America and Brazil was the only place it got big. kindof surprising!

Sneakybadger 's avatar

Sneakybadger Apr 13, 2010 Rating: 1

No chance, that side wave would be moving at some real speed! He'll make it into the face but will have to contend with a serious side roll effect when the wedge passes over him!

millerdr's avatar

millerdr Apr 12, 2010 Rating: 2

Its not gonna break, he doesnt need to duckdive. it looks nuts but this guy is close enough to the channel to be able to paddle right over this thing.

Dr Fargon Apr 13, 2010 Rating: 2

In answer to your question, no it would not present a problem. Using the formula P=a/b x H>m, the pressure would be no greater than say, a public pool. There is, however the problem of nitrogen saturation. Two hours of thrashing about in waves of this size would put you in a group D repeditive dive situation. (refer to the NAUI chart) This would require you to spend 30 minutes or so bobbing in the channel for every 2 hours surfing. (I'm sure you've seen this) Using this method along with blowing your sinuses prior to youe duck dive should solve both problems. Or you could prepare yourself ahead of time as I do...remain on shore as long as possible with your head up your ass. Hope this helps

Dr Fargon's avatar

Dr Fargon Apr 13, 2010 Rating: 0

In answer to that question I would say no, that would not present a problem. Using the formula P= a/d x s/h>, The effect would be equal to aprox a 6 foot depth. However, after 2 or so hours of this would put your nitrogen levels into group D reptitve dive situation. (refer to the NAUI dive tables) To combat both of these situations, I would sugest blowing your sinuses just before a duck dive and spend 20 min of every surfing hour bobbing in the chanel. (you've many surfers doing this) You can also prepare your body for this eventuality by doing as I do...walk around with my head up my ass.

The side-shore bump on this wave is easily big enough to longboard. But you'd have to change the direction, and get rid of that water mountain first.
