It's your for the taking...the crowd is at pipe, not here, and this is keiki beach, not sunset beach. Too risky for most people, to be honest.

HeyWally's avatar

HeyWally Jan 18, 2011 Rating: 0

Yep, this is Keiki. I used to live in a house right there on the beach. When this place goes off it throws thick lips that pitch directly on dry sand. I remember one year after a huge stormy swell, a shallow sand bar formed near the rock shelf seen in the background. When the next swell arrived there was a wedge off the rock shelf into the sandbar and air drops with 50 yard stand up tubes ending in a shore thump. I lived on Kieki for 3 years and never saw those conditions come together again.

Another amazing shot carpewave! I am definitely buying this, only I cant decide whether to go for the £15.99 or the £31.99. I havnt bought a print off MSW yet so I'm a bit wary about putting lots of money straight up (I'm still at school so or me its a lot ha) Can anyone give any feedback about the print sizes, it would be helpful. Thanks guys and keep up the inspirational work carpewave!!!

Jake VS's avatar

Jake VS Apr 17, 2010 Rating: 1

Thanks guys, I think I'll just bite the bullet and go for the £32 one, the cheaper one just doesnt seem big enough for such an awesome pic! Hopefully will be putting this beaut on my wall in a few days then!

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 0

Thanks Jake! Thanks Ben for your help! So stoked you like it! Any size will be a crisp shot as it is a full sized shot. The demensions of the shot are actually poster size by default. You won't lose quality by buying a larger size. Aloha

Ben Freeston's avatar

Ben Freeston Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 0

Jake the print sizes listed here are based on the actual image (not general guidelines) this will be the exact size you get in the post, so grab your measure and you can work out exactly what it'll look like on your wall. They're all printed on high quality photo paper (these aren't cheap posters) and we can normally turn it around to you in two or three days. Cheers!

I am from Fairhope Alabama. I can't wait to photograph a hurricane swell on the Gulf Coast. I feel like I owe it to the place since I am from there. Not to mention that anytime I score an empty sandbar barrel all to myself, I am stoked! Of course I won't be in nearly as good of shape with only a handful of swells each year.

it just seems that some idiots get real kick out of doing such a stuff, just ignore them. what's a photographer? a guy with a camera? you the one who's spending time neck deep in a pit and that just seems to be a bit too tough for some to deal with. angry little keyboard terrorists, they are all over the msg boards. if that makes someones day, then that's fine, only thing i know for sure is that we have by far the best office in world and dickheads and trolls and kooks like that can just suck it in their miserable lifes. most of those haven't never seen a real wave, so of course it hurts when you show them how world might look like outside of their own comfort box. voting, rating, tagging... http://magicseaweed.com/photoLab/tag-history.php?id=65389, this one is just another of those cases where 10% think that my photo sucks ass, but what's 10%? oh wait a minute, maybe it does suck.

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 1

I sense a little sarcasm in your typing. Haha. Maybe it's not a photog, it could just be someone with a chip on their shoulder. One way or another, there's no debate about it, someone is rerating my photos over and over until they are less than 4.5. I'm not wrong about that. The reason I figured it might be a photog was that every time my Clark Little/Spencer Skipper photo appeared in the Top Shots, every one of my photos were busted down in ranking. These latest three (since I changed from Pipe to Sunset for my posts) are the only not ranked below 4.5. The rest are. Check out page one two and three of my photos. You'll notice a trend in the rankings. http://magicseaweed.com/photoLab/user/32928/ Or, check out the number of 1 ratings that someone bothered to put on this photo if you don't believe me....76 ones: http://magicseaweed.com/photoLab/tag-history.php?id=158563

40's avatar

40 Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 1

you must be kidding when you say that another photog is sandbagging your ratings. well, maybe you right because after all, these days everyone's a photographer and fame in msw is the real measure who's the boss.

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 0

I don't know the best way to fix the problem, that was just a suggestions, but maybe just talking about it will raise awareness or spur MSW admins to start looking into it. I don't think we can rely on people to browse through the other photos. I just don't see it happening. I would think there's only a handful of people that actually go to the photo page and the top shots page. I'd say for the most part, if you keep a photo on the homepage, that's the best way to get tons of views, comments, and ratings. I'd put money down that most hits on photos come from the home page.

Try not to let it worry you!

Spongerdudette's avatar

Spongerdudette Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 1

It's not just Carpewave's photo's that the minus 1 rate does this to. There is a lovely shot from Holland that had all +5's on here last night and went to the top rated shot. I would say that within 10-15 minutes, the minus rater struck and it went totally off of the front pager. And unless users on here take the time out to go thru the photos loaded onto the browse page, it is unlikely to be seen and voted back to the top (or front page again), which in my opinion is a real shame. There are some real good photos that don't get seen because someone goes thru newly uploaded shots and votes them a one. However I don't think that going by the amounts of views alone would necessarily work. As for blocking the person's IP address.....it's an idea but again would it possible for msw to do. So basically in the mean time, until this ''problem'' can be sorted out, I think that it's down to users on here to make a point of going thru the ''browse'' section and voting. By doing this the idiot ruining things for not only the photographer as well as the viewer will lose and hopefully get fed up and stop doing this.

KernowDoc's avatar

KernowDoc Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 2

What a tool! Jealousy just shows he thinks your shots are better than his. Just read above that you're still in school! Mate you have a cracking career ahead of you, don't worry about some idiot messing with your photos now, you're building up one hell of a fan base (badger is a bit of a worrying fan, that guy loves you!) on here and things will only get better. Good luck buddy.

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Apr 16, 2010 Rating: 1

Because one second all my photos are stable maybe a rating or 2 changing a little, but then every single one of my photos ranks less than 4.5. Kinda obvious. Plus you can look at every one of my photos and click on the link of the users that have added it as a favorite and it tells you the vote breakdown. There are plenty ones.

Thanks all! I'll keep chuggin' along. I'll post up a sick backwash shot I got the other day. It was a day where most barrels were on dry sand or an inch or two of water. When the bombs came through they were off the shore and were often exploding from backwash! It was a shore break photographers playground!

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Apr 15, 2010 Rating: 1

Here's another possible solution: I wonder if MSW could alter their algorithm for the home page photos and top shots page so that the variable related to votes counts less, and the number of views counts more. I think that a photo's number of views more accurately represents the popularity of the photo. They don't have to fix their voting system. I think that if votes mattered less, then people wouldn't be abusing the system anyways because it wouldn't be worth their time to rank everything low. It wouldn't matter if they did, why would they do it? With their algorithm (or whatever it is) written this way, the number of views would override any low scores on photos.

housewives choice's avatar

housewives choice Apr 15, 2010 Rating: 0

Dude. First of all. Sweet pic. After that I can sympathise with ya over that ass that is doin that to your ratings. How does someone even come up with that idea!!?? Keep up the good work.

CarpeWave's avatar

CarpeWave Apr 15, 2010 Rating: 1

That's actually a great idea for a feature. The photographers wouldn't worry about ratings anymore. I have a pesky person that purposefully rates my photo 1 and then takes the time to reset the internet cookies and then rate it 1 again, and again until it ranks less than 4.5 which is the level that they take all the photos off the top shots or homepage photos. It must be another photographer (most likely one in the top shots from last month...just a suspicion) that wants his photos in these spots. Course all that's speculation. He took so much time out of his day that he ranked every single photo that I have up over and over until every one was less than 4.5. I took the time once to restore all the photos to just greater than 4.5. I did this because every one of them was greater than 4.5 before and some were even close to 5's. Well, he just did it again, so I give up. I am not going to waste hours of my day re ranking my photos greater than 4.5. Thanks whoever you are. Really cool how just your votes removed the Clark Little/Spencer Skipper photo from the top photos of last month. Real cool. Over 19,000 views, but who's opinion matters more than the publics? It would be a cool feature to actually know what your photos real ranking is, but not with this jackass. You win. Hope you're happy now that all my photos don't reflect the real public opinion. I bet you're glad now that they reflect your opinion. Here's my new idea. Anyone who votes 1 over and over on any photo should have his/her IP address disabled from voting. Seems like it would be easy to write a program for that. Same IP address over and over.

Oh yeah, that one was bad for sure! Instead of falling with the lip for 10+ feet, I felt myself being accelerated that distance and then I hit the water and immediately after sand and was just pinned there while the lip expelled all it's energy into me. Fat lip. Thank god it was sand. Came up seeing stars and was disoriented, but all I could think of was....get out of the impact zone, prolly another coming. I made it out to safety. It was an intense lesson for me. Here's the lesson: avoid getting sucked over the falls at all costs. Haha
