I didn't mean soft as in not powerful mate, i can see that i wouldn't want to be anywhere near in front of it when it breaks. I meant the texture of the water just has a softer look to it. That's why i said "if you get what i mean" because i could see how someone could think i meant something else. But rest assured i can see power when i see it mate. No harm meant ;) BTW, how long do you think you would be held under by that wave?(just curious) :)

Yeah i guess so ;) See that's what this website is all about! A group of surfers and body borders alike just sitting back, having a joke a chat and just relaxing while checking out some great surf photos and charts :)

Nice one with the breathing in before you go underwater . Top tip that one.Silly old me, breathing in underwater all this time.I'll go and practise that as soon as I have my tongue surgically removed from my cheek!

Sounds to me like you guys are arguing about the size of your dicks here. Lets just generalize and say that big waves = heavier hold-downs, and small ones = not so heavy? If you wanna be scientific about it, don't generalize. There are far too many variables to say how long or hard a hold-down is at any break. Reef, sand, channels, sand troughs, reef gaps etc. Sometimes a huge wave can just spit you out the back in a second if you land right and there are a few other favourable circumstances, and sometimes small waves can surprise you and send you through the rinser for what feels like forever, and then drag you down again just when you think it's all over. I just take a huge gulp of air before I go.., every time!

Sneakybadger May 2, 2010 Rating: 2

It was a generalization, the key word being general (see my original comment lol), there are always exceptions. Simply explaining my opinion that the above wave would be more of a beating than a hold down.

You said the heavier and shallower the wave the quicker you come up- bit of a generalisation, eh? Zicatela breaks in about knee to waist high water, then you have at least 6ft of water moving fast from very deep water to very shallow water coming down on top of you, the lip breaks the surface and pushes anything right down to the bottom with it, pins you there then sucks you back up for another go round.Surfers who know talk of Hawaiian power south of Acapulco.France does not have comparable power in my opinion. The waves at PE making a very scary boom, boom , then whip crack -like sound , which you can hear from the Arco-Iris, even when it breaks at head high. It even makes the ground shake on a big swell !You'd have to ask Richard Schmidt or someone to compare big Zicatela with Mavericks. I've entered the water in Hossegor ( wouldn't say I surfed it as such!) at d/o head but I wouldn't consider that at Zicatela beach break.Loads of surfers floating around at bigger Hossegor, but once Puerto Escondido gets near double over head, everyone except the pros and hellmen head for La Punta.

Sneakybadger May 2, 2010 Rating: 2

The hold down at Mav's would be far worse, pushes you deeper for a longer distance. I'm not saying all shallow waves will let you up easy.. simply saying the above wouldn't be to bad and then comparing it to the deep water breaks. Eg, if you surf La Nord and La Grav on the same day (as I have) , at the same size, there is a definite difference!

Go to Puerto Escondido and see if you still think the same!

Sneakybadger 's avatar

Sneakybadger May 1, 2010 Rating: 2

Not that long I wouldn't have thought. Generally, the heavier and shallower the the wave, the quicker you come up. All the power gets expended all at once, would be a violent few seconds though!

Everyone prefers forehand? I think you are mistaken. I live in a place where there isn't much lefts, and I'm not very good on a left, but I still prefer my lefts. Pigdogging tubes are just so much fun! Plus a floater seems easier.

tommo's avatar

tommo May 2, 2010 Rating: 0

i have my moods. somedays i wanna go right, then after a while i start to miss going left.

Drew Peacock May 1, 2010 Rating: 0

OK OK forehand/backhand preference and talent are in no way related. I just love em both, and I would urge anyone who doesn't yet fully appreciate the warmth of the wave on your back, to just layback in the barrel and feel the love...bliss

I heard Fanning hates everything left; driving on the left, left wing...his own left hand! Have you seen a close up of his left hand? Its prosthetic after he hacked it off in a fit of left-based rage.

Reillser's avatar

Reillser May 1, 2010 Rating: 0

Got to agree doc, frontside is way better, I also saw a clip of Mick Fanning saying 'I fucking hate lefts...', so even the pro's have prefer it.

Sneakybadger 's avatar

Sneakybadger May 1, 2010 Rating: 0

I have to agree with the Doc! No matter how good you are, there will always be a preference! Unless of course your a pro and training.
