Those little guys really aren't that dangerous, as long as you avoid the shoals of fish you're ok.

to all you oil spill blaming finger pointing hypocrites.....i think it is best if before you start blaming the companies that are simply supplying our demand...that you look at the underlying cause of the problem....YOU...and me. It is kind of ironic and hypocritical that you bitch and moan about oil companies being evil as you bang away on keys that are made of oil...that are powered by energy created from oil...look around everything has been made of or depends on oil in some way. Boogie boards and surfboards...made of oil....wetsuits...made of oil....baggies oil....if I am wrong about them being made of oil well then they consumed copious quantities of oil to get to the shelves from which you bought them. Who is to blame for that oil spill...YOU..and me. Take responsibility for your mistakes and correct your behavior that is how you solve a problem...buy less crap...dont drive as fast...turn your AC/heaters off...keep your computer an extra couple of years...grow your own food....turn off unused lights...and above all else...STOP EATING BEANS!

Good point Squirl! Another stuff to save something... water (almost every developping country lacks it) !!! Put 2 full bottles of 1,5 l in your toilet flush, you'll save 3 l each time you use it. Something else, take showers instead of using the bathtub... Rince your wetsuit in bucket. You'll find tons of stuff to save water & energy, just be aware that these are scarce resources, & that humanity is not equal regarding those. Some people have to walk half a day to go get water (mornings & evenings). Aloha

Are Croc shoes made from oil based products? The world would be infinitely better without those monstrosities for a start.

Our reliance on oil and oil derived products is the biggest issue people and their countries face globally, I think. I just clicked on the photo to see what was in it (because it wasn't clear) but this debate is a bit more important than whether or not the sharks are photo-shopped!!! I don't know what the solution is but I know that every individual should look at their personal consumption and use of oil derived products and develop an awareness of how much we use and waste. Addressing (ie. cutting down usage) this doesn't really seem to come close to fixing things, though. And it is so hard. I don't want to think about not being able to make a long haul flight somewhere because it is bad for the planet, my carbon footprint, etc (as an example of how things must change). But ultimately, isn't that how things must go in order to really change things? I'd be surprised if there aren't alternatives to oil that have been developed but everything we use to produce energy seems to have its knock on detrimental effects for the environment. Just some thoughts and sorry for meandering!

When your surfing 2 hundred yards from shore I rather take a wave in then paddle through the fishy inside.

Spongerdudette's avatar

Spongerdudette May 4, 2010 Rating: 1

Out of curiosity I must ask, if a shark came at you why did you stay in the water with so many around, wouldn't it of been safer to get out? I understand the ''need'' to be out there taking waves, but aren't you just dicing with death just a little there!

DiMarco May 4, 2010 Rating: 0

The sharks are real and the photo was only sharpened in photoshop. I have over a dozen of these shots from that morning. I watched surfers go in and come out right away freaked out. The sharks have been nuts in South Florid this year. 5 weeks ago I was going down the line and fell two feet in front of a 6 foot shark. I keep my eyes open under water so I could punch at him if he came at me. I watched him bolt away and I jumped back on my board to freaking quickly as I could. On the next wave in I road over and counted 5 sharks swimming around. I was also hit by a shark a little north from here about a month early. Saw the shark in the wave above me about 30 feet from me and came right out me, waked my board and bolted again. That same day a girl was bitten at the beach I was surfing at.

There are most likely oil alternatives, Palm Oil is probably a worse solution. However, with so much influence over politicians the large oil companies would suppress them coming to market to protect profits. Bring on the conspiracies!

Yeah I had heard something like that Younss, but to be honest it doesn't surprise me in the least. We too have had oil spills in the UK and I've seen the damage it can cause and it's definitely a terrible thing. From what I've heard BP are going to be make to pay for the cleanup (only right and proper), which will take many years to achieve if at all, but as usual the cost of that will be passed onto customers. But the biggest price will be to the wildlife and coastline...bad times.

Younes's avatar

Younes May 3, 2010 Rating: 1

You right Dudette, even our boards... They're all the same for sure, but regarding BP, did you know that they refused to sign a kind of required "safety upgrade" last year? We experienced one major oil slick half an hour from my home spot 15 years ago, you just don't wanna imagine how it looks like. It smells death, makes you cry

It doesn't matter what oil company is at ''fault'', they are all the same.....a greed for money but supplying the demand. Many countries have been badly affected by oil spills over the years but maybe we should look ''closer to home''. If it wasn't for man's greed for oil then the companies wouldn't drill for it, and by this saving the earth's precious resources and environment. Just stop for a moment and take a look at our daily lives and realise just how reliant we are on oil based products...cars, manufacturing, petrol based products, even right down to the delivery of goods from the factory to the shops and plane travel. And that makes us just as guilty as the oil companies.
