Surfs Up Surf School's photo of Polzeath

Nothing special about this photo you might think ... except for the fact that the lad up and riding only has one leg - the result of service in Afghanistan. The event and surf instructors were from Surf Action (www.surfaction.co.uk)

I don't think Widass should be banned. People like that ban themselves. He'll get a minus 13 now even he says nice shot, if he ever comments on here again. As for fishy fingers, I'm a vet myself and served in a diferent conflict in a diferent time though the worse I got was crabs. Some of my friends wern't so lucky but if this serviceman is like my friends he'd be the first to make that arm and a leg crack. it's just not fishy's place to say it. I'd like to see that brave serviceman become a MSW member so he can see the support he has in this small community.

That was a good reply that your friend gave Doc.

Dr Fargon's avatar

Dr Fargon Jun 7, 2010 Rating: 1

Well not exactly...Young men in that situation want our respect...not our pity. The best comeback I ever heard was years ago, a friend and I just back in the states, were having breakfast and a man sitting next to us leaned over and said, "how'd you loose your leg son?" my friend replied, " I didn't loose it, I know right where it is. I just don't want to go back and get it"

Widdas, My name is Russ Pierre, our non profit organisation Surf Action www.surfaction.co.uk organised this event, NOT help for Heroes. Your comment disgusts me. During this weekend our team were all humbled by these guys. Their stories are astounding and emotional. We saw horrific photos of injuries and spoke to each one about their futures. One thing that idiots like you fail to realise is that these boys are Royal marines and would like nothing more that to be back in Afghan with their mates. They've had friends killed and the guy who you say is well enough to fight is 19. How old are you and what choices have you got in your life. I bet you one thing is true Widdas, I bet Gibbo stood up on a surfboard quicker than you. All I ask of you so ocalled surfers who write these comments trying to get a rise out of people, is to remember that these are real people who have achieved something amazing, they don't want your sympathy they want to get on with their lives and hopefully one day they will be dropping in on whilst you flap around on your plastic surfboards talking crap and being critical about something you have absolutley no knowledge of. Widdas you are NOT a surfer.

Cant belive you wrote that. If your joking, your not funny. If your not I hope you run into a group of marines and make a smart ass comment like that. I have been to Afgan my self and think the unlucky ones who get hit deserve our up most respect. You on the other hand don't. Simply put you are a prick and I think MSW should ban you for that comment. Well done to the surfer. Respect. And good on Surfs up school.

While we are talking about dick head comments, I just wanted to say how tired I am looking at this photo on the front page...! Seriously, u got ur Hi5's, including from me on both of em' but really, any other day these photo's don't stand a chance!I'm changing mine to a +3, it's lame now....sorry to piss anyone off w/ this comment, but I've had all that I can take with this.....I'm not even going to visit this thread anymore!....I'm outta here!

AGREED! School him now so he can thank us when he has gained a little wisdom, and rethinks his approach...for all we now it's an 11yo child? For all we know, it's the next Ben Player!....or let him continue to do what he does, and watch other people kick his balls, YOU learn eventually! Just ask Betty, she's kicked my nads black and blue:(

Very well put dipper I completely agree with the majority of your comment +1 ! I however disagree that it should be deleted, freedom of speech has many more practicalities than simply being allowed to speak your mind. If comments like these are censored then the people saying them will never learn. I mean in this example, look at the backlash he has received! One would hope that next time he contemplates being overly insensitive or pathetic, he may think twice. Sweeping ignorance under the carpet never helps, let him have his say, I just hope he reads these replies!

‘WIDDAS29’----I don't normally get involved with the comments or discourse on MSW; however your comment has been bothering me for a few hours now since looking at it this morning. Are you on drugs, deranged or just playing provocative? Either way you must have a very low level of intelligence or integrity, perhaps both. I’m well against the war and any form of violence, be it physical or verbal; however this lad has done his job, bravely and with valour and surely he now deserves a bit of peace, respite and fun without idiots like yourself passing comment such as the above. MSW ONLINE ED- CAN YOU REMOVE THIS IDIOT’S COMMENTS PLEASE; FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS ONE THING BUT YOU NEED TO DRAW A LINE SOMEWHERE! THIS GUYS COMMENTS ARE NOT IN THE SPIRIT OF SURF, NOR COMMUNITY AND HAVE NO PLACE HERE... PEACE

I'm sorry but I just can't hold back on this one. Widdas29 you are the biggest pillock (politest word that I can think of) around. What the heck do you mean he can go back over there and carry on fighting, don't you think that this man as well as others has given enough. Somehow if that were you I don't think for one second that you would want to go back, as you would def be moaning about the sacrifice already made. I totally agree with what SneakBadger has said, if you feel that strongly about it sign up, go out there and put your life in danger, or is it a case of do as I said and not to as I do. People like YOU make me want to vomit, so just shut your mouth, and keep your nasty horrible little thoughts to yourself. These are BRAVE service personnel going an extremely brave job and one which I wouldn't want to do. So show these guys some respect before you crawl back under your dirty little stone, you're lower then a snakes belly pfft.

To the guy in the photo GOOD ON YA MATE, there's nothing like a bit of water therapy keep it up. Most of us are proud as hell about the boys and girls over in sandy places putting there lives on the line so i would not pay to much attention to misinformed DICK HEADS like this.

Some of my best friends are in the armed services and I think what they do is brave and courageous, rehabilitation for people like this is a great idea, why should they lead a life any different to anybody else. you can tell by how much hes enjoying it it means a lot to him. I know it meant a lot to me when I first learnt to stand up on a board.

would he be beter off riding goofy, because the back foot needs more control in the turns ? tricky to go against your instincts.either way he is going to develope a unique style. front foot and rail grab maybe . respect and bon courage. i saw a documentary about soldiers who lost limbs going skiing and i think its great they can get out there raving. keep surfing man, it just gets beter and beter.

If he'd change his position, he'd probably wouldn't get the wave porperly, the wave would just go under him. I think his doin good, and if he doesnt feel pain when pushing on the leg he lost, then hi could do smooth machado-like turns :P Awsome.

Like soutie says..."WOT?"...."LARGE?"...she is a lady...but "LARGE?"U better check urself 39! That's MY LADY u SOB, and u have no idea how much assholes that throw stones like YOU make her weep so loud that my ears tuck themselves in to prevent my balls from bursting! The punchline fingers used was" I would go but they charge an arm and a leg," and after seeing u and several others "frat/hazing," take turns kicking his nuts, I think I'm happier w/ not joining ur "bully beatdown" on fingers and would rather get kicked in my junk...I like ..no wait...I love that type of sh*t:)Laughing at people w/ disabilities...it's why I chose the medical profession;)Can't wait to get off vacation, so I can laugh at people? I'm not laughing at the f*cker riding, and I say f*cker because he deserves the respect of being one of us....a rider or pooh squater as I call em'..but the GREAT post that fingers put that didn't deserve the smack u and most of all Russ w/ "I call for the removal"..hey, F*ck u Russ! ur not Rad enough to be a radmen, and ur photo sux...it's only on here because of the OBVIOUS...how's that for a smack of reality 39? I mean seriously, props for the "call of duty," but w/out the acknowledgment of this pic being what it's about....the photo sux, and that's the truth...I'd rather wank it to my lady...BTW, delete my comment Russ if it's to much...I'd hate to hurt advertising for ur school....but a little advice, lighten up..if fingers comment mad u cry, I'd love to see u in a line up around the way...f*cking 11 yo would burn u on every drop:)I'm off to see who I can laugh at now 39...."Wot?" Who's that ugly fuck n the window?..Oh wait.... that's just a mirror....HAHA...I joked myself"DrrrrDish, biaaatch!"

I have a feeling the subject of this photo would have had a good laugh at finger bangers comment! This guy has obviously over come his disability and personal hang ups! Typically a person who has the testicle fortitude to rise above such personal obstacles has the ability to have a laugh at there own expense. He doesn't want to be treated like a "special person" as evident by his pursuit of surfing....I am sure he wants to be treated like an equal complete with light hearted ribbing and jovial camaraderie!! Scalpels and stitches do wonders but a wise person once said "laughter is the best best medicine"

have to agree with dangalow. It was funny and done in a light harted way. I bet the guy in the photo would laugh at it, hes obviously not wallowing in self pity. just getting on with it. If you join the army you have to realise that this might happen to you. just like if you go surf a mad slab that sucks dry you might break your neck.....would that make you a hero too? hmm... they weren't fighting for their country they were fighting for some some suits who want to make more money. Heroes or victims of bull shit! Sh!t just realised i am going off on one.. sorry.
