Surfs Up Surf School's photo of Polzeath

MILLIES hero Ben McBean achieves another milestone - by going SURFING. The former Marine, who lost an arm and a leg to a Taliban bomb, went into the sea for the first time since suffering his injuries in 2008. Ben, 23, was hailed a hero by Prince Harry after they met as he was being flown home injured from Afghanistan. And Ben and other amputee soldiers chose to surf at Polzeath, North Cornwall - where Harry learnt the sport as a teenager. The determined Commando previously won a Sun Military "Millie" Award for Triumph Over Adversity after running the London Marathon and climbing to Everest Base Camp. But he admitted: "I was mega-negative about surfing. I haven't been on a beach since my injury. "I thought it would be patronising to be pushed around on a board but you get a massive sense of freedom from being in the water so I loved it. No one stared at my leg, no one cared. It wasn't embarrassing." Ben was joined by Nicolas Gibbons, 19, of Sheffield, and Jay Hare, 29, of Anglesea, Wales, who were also injured in 2008. Jay and Nicolas were both with 45 Commando. Jay lost his left leg below the knee, injured his right hand and lost an eye, while Nicolas lost his right leg below the knee. Nicolas said: "Surfing is awesome. I've never been and never thought I'd be able to do it but it was great. I'm going to take it up as a hobby." The trio are all attached to Hasler Company, the Royal Marine rehabilitation unit based at HMS Drake in Plymouth. Royal Navy surgeon commander Anthony Lambert operated on both Jay and Nicolas in Afghanistan. Now he dedicates part of his time looking after "his boys" as they continue to recover in the UK. Anthony said yesterday: "I know these boys really well and it's great to be able to get them out here surfing. "They were all fit before they got injured and apart from the fact they've now got bits missing they're fitter than their civilian counterparts because of the way they are. They've got the will to succeed." In Cornwall they were with other soldiers who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Former tank crewman Rich Emerson, who now teaches injured combatants to surf, said yesterday: "The aim is to give these guys a break and help them enjoy themselves." Rich, 44, who served with the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars during the first Gulf war in 1991, began surfing 12 years ago. He suffered from PTSD but found riding waves helped him beat his depression. He has since formed Surf Action to support all combat veterans."

Whoever runs Magicseaweed needs to start moderating certain comments pages. This site is going in a Youtube direction. Any dickhead can write whatever they want. It's taking away from the purpose of MSW. Apparently comments can be deleted? I don't see many instances of that. Take responsibility MSW.

just to clarify, ed's boss at msw is called ben. the idle chatter and weak jokes are welcome. a surfer is someone who rides waves on a surfboard, not who you decide who is or isnt. wooooooooooooooooooo, you are not a SURFER, wake up man, some surfers are absolute pricks.

How does, having amazing picture of two amputees surfing for the first time end up the butt of jokes, pathetic comments, and a load of pointless chatter. The only commments that should be made in relation to these guys should be 'amazing' and 'inspiring'. For the people who have left positive comments thankyou, for those who have nothing better to do than make jokes, you may surf but you certainly aren't surfers.

Thats racist against banjos, I hear ukulele's are just as bad! ;)

sqirl's avatar

sqirl Jun 11, 2010 Rating: 2

prawn....what exactly do you know about racism? I guess being from such an ethnically diverse country like ireland you get to sit on a soap box and tell everyone else what is and isnt racist (that was sarcasm btw). I cant stand it when some A-hole gets on a soap box to bitch about something they know absolutely nothing about! if you want to be such an expert on racial relations then I suggest you move somewhere that there are lots of different ethnic varieties. Then go out and interact, converse, and befriend some contrasting ethnicities. Once you have done this and have some real world experience then maybe you can tell us all the difference between celebrating differences and racism. I suggest Beaufort South Carolina.....one tip though...if you hear banjos run like hell!!

For goodness sake Prawn get real will you, as there is no ''mob'' rule as you put it, as it would be a huge ''mob'' with just me and Sqirl. Has it actually occurred to you that I plus rated Sqirl's comment and then added my own saying ''a good call'' because that is what I thought about his comment........no I thought not. Like yourself I am entitled to my own point of view and have the right to submit a comment as much as you or anyone else on this site. You say ''MSW doesn't have to give anyone the platform to say whatever the hell they want, on its site'', which is totally correct. However, it appears to me that for you it's a case of ''do as I say, and not do as I do'', because you yourself have had several rants on this one photo thread alone banging on about moderation and deletion of users comments, so does that make you the bullyboy of this site then? And that we've all got to agree with you or else....don't think so. You should remember Prawn that we all have different views and opinions, and had you submitted a comment that I agreed with, I would of also plus rated it and said so as well.

(WTF? Berko's cheap racist joke was the one that was deleted. He couldn't moderate his ballbag.) 'The Taliban won'? So I'm either for a completely unmoderated MSW or with the Taliban. Reminds me of Bush saying 'You're either with America or you're with the terrorists'. That's a false dichotomy. A Bad argument. Sqirl, we have the 'right to say whatever the hell we want'. But MSW doesn't have to give anyone the platform to say whatever the hell they want, on its site. Freedom of speech argument everywhere, Bad argument #2. Soldiers 'putting their lives on the line' for us. Appealing to emotion there. Lazy, bad argument #3. If you're the mob moderating this site with your half backed logic, we're screwed. So mob rule doesn't work. Luckily MSW apply a light regulation so we can enjoy the surf pics and comments. The way it should be. Out of here..

Not a big fan of berko's comments but in this instance he has nailed it! Ben McBean and any other person who puts his/her life on the line, does so to preserve our right to say whatever the hell we want. The people should be responsible for the moderation of comments.....and as it happens on this site they are. Prawn your comments are well on their way to where they belong....voted below threshhold.

Hi Russ. Just had a look at the website and its an obviously fantastic set up you guys are running. I wondered if Surf Action had a Facebook link? If not it might be worth setting one up as I reckon you would generate loads of support through that kind of network. I would certainly post it out there and have loads of friends who would pass it on. Perhaps MSW could help set up a specific FB link from this site? With photos like these, I think it sends a very positive and inspiring message to the country of the stuff these guys are made of and the amazing work you are all doing. Its not just inspiring, its actually rejuvenating at a time when the country/ world seems to need it most in recent times. Thanks.

My name is Russ Pierre and we organised and ran this event for members of Hasler Company. Our non-profit organisation is called 'Surf Action' you can find out more at www.surfaction.co.uk and also at www.combatsurfer.blogspot.com. This event had nothing to do with 'help for heroes' and to the guy at the top of the comments who asked 'who the perv is licking his lips?' that my friend is Surgeon Antony 'Doc' Lambert. This is the amazing man that saves lives and limbs in Afghanistan. He worked on these guys as soon as they came of the helicopter from the field. This man and all the marines that took part are absolutly without question the bravest blokes I have ever met.

good points 39, but the Hawaaian girl was a good surfer before loosing the arm, here we are talking about learning with one arm and one leg, and what if the arm was lost above the elbow? i am sure you are right, these lads could do it but how much quicker would they be raving in powerful surf on a bodyboard ? Just so you know Ben, bodyboarding isnt a kids thing. there are some hardcore chargers on bodyboards and some waves that are just about only makeable on bodyboards. it can be an extreme sport.

There's that Hawaiian girl who lost an arm to a shark and still rips and a guy called 'Pirata' from Guaruja who has one leg and rips without a prosthetic, using an arm to accelerate, he's even surfed big Ulus.A bunch of ultra fit, determined guys like Marines would certainly be on it quick if they wanted.

soutie's avatar

soutie Jun 2, 2010 Rating: 2

thats the big Marine who rips your head off and shits down your neck. I have given this surf thing a bit of thought, and depending on where you lost your arm the paddling is going to be a bitch, I dont know what prosthetics you got. popping up will surely be tricky aswell. Wouldnt body boarding be a beter bet, because finning with one leg will still propel you straight and you dont have to stand. this way you could be attacking the heavier, more critical waves sooner. I know it looks gay, but the spongers on here swear by it.

Its really heartwarming and inspiring to see this photo Ben. My brother is a Royal Marine and your determination makes me proud of what you guys are about. It shows the strength of mind and body required to become a marine does not stop at the training camp or on return from a posting, and thats why you guys are known to be the best in the world. I have got a huge amount of respect for all the forces out there and it simply humbles me every day...especially seeing you just 'cracking on' after your injuries.
