so bloody exciting this pic here, so exciting. seems like most of you peeps don't have any clue what's going on there when one scores 98 in eddie. that shorey part was piece of piss when compared to take off, novelty thing for a guy like 10. http://video.mpora.fr/watch/1fQrXiyXg/. and about the yellow board, well sounds like you guys rip so much waimea that you replace your 9'6" as often as you do with your shortboard. oh wait a minute, most of you are bodyboarders anyway and can't really relate on that because sponges don't get yellow.

Here's my two cents: If anyone has seen the clips of Bruce or Andy (or any other W-Bay charger) making when its 30ft+, coming out of the aftermath clean, and riding through the reform just cruising for a few hundred yards thinking the whole time "im committed now, gotta pull in to the infamous shorebreak" knowing it's gonna throw forward so hard it will be wider than it is tall and close-out at 1ft depth no matter what....then you'll understand the power of this photo.

I'm sure it is but the point is that is doesn't look mean or even mildly interesting in this shot. The photog was obviously there for the 98 pointer so come on lets see what all the fuss is about...

hey i actually think this pic is pretty cool. i dont see why the people below are so angry. it doesnt matter whether or not he's riding a huge wave or doing a cool trick. he's still surfing, and the pic looks cool from this angle.

Nah! He has a love affair & great memories with that board from what i read somewhere... He left it in a garage for years & found it waiting for him for this edition of the eddie... Kelly's born early 70's i believe, he's from thae generation who loves dakine of old school tales & legends

its only the "photo of the day" becuase kelly slater is in it...

40's avatar

40 Oct 21, 2010 Rating: 6

no offense but there's nothing what makes this photo a 'good photo', no matter if it's about surfing or photography in general. soft, boring framing... long list there. a photo of slater doesn't equal a great photo without right elements in it. this is the way you shoot your buddies who don't rip, between the peak moments because peak moments bring out the real level of surfing. but with slater???? must have been a slow day in upload department.

ben59, to publish something like this is exactly biting a hand which feeds you. you sound like a dude who likes to go against a grain, or that's how it sounds if this gets your heart pumping. i could call you one fat kook, but that would be stupid because all i know are your dumb comments in internet.

Who the heck chooses these "photos of the day"? Of all the King Kelly shots out there why would you use one of him riding the shore break and doing naff all with it. Out of respect for Mr Slater please rethink this one!

human touch yes indeed, what about a super human touch when he pulled in those bombs from take off just like he was surfing a 6ft beachie. i'm sure he's super stoked to be profiled this way, probably can't wait to check out some other photos of the day to see how his compare.

What is all the moaning about? This is a good photo. Its an original shot and reminiscent of 70's and 80's style, and has that 'human' touch as mentioned above. There is so much radical progressive surfing out there and on tour, its nice to see something a bit more original, and don't forget Kelly is getting on, like me, and probably enjoys the opportunity to chill out on a wave once in a while. I like it.

It is the best photo uploaded 'today' that's the point. It's not 'photo of the week'. Also we get to choose which is the second point. Most importantly it is a good photo.

Sorry Ed, but if you are going to use that rationale then why not stick a photo of him walking into the water 5 mins before he made the 98 point run, or 5 mins before that when he was waxing his board. “Photo of the day” should mean just that. Best shot uploaded for that day. Otherwise rename it “Probably would have been photo of the day but I missed it by a few seconds”. No disrespect to the photographer but lets not go around rewarding mediocrity when there are some other cracking pictures uploaded this week that piss all over this one from the very greatest of heights. The internet is littered with amazing Kelly shots, this just dilutes the pool. Your site - your call….tjo has a point though
