She's great under water and in the last stage of the duck-dive. The angle of the photo makes it all screwy, nevertheless, the shot is absolutely superb, with scale effect and makes some people think twice b4 they dog surfing as whatever :) sport.

Definitely appears to be going the wrong way...maybe she is pulling off a big one and ducking backwards underneath the lip? Who knows, still a cracking shot!

It's just the angle ... breaking white water behind her, heading to the left. She's going right. Nothing more to see here - move along - move along. (Poster quality pic.)

those transparent fins are neat! pretty photo! I can't tell if she is duckdiving backwards, but its probably just the angle?

I have used those 'diamond tip' short board soft plastic nose guards made by SurfCo to lessen the danger from the pointy nose tip typical of most short boards. The epoxy glue provided with them eventually failed twice for me though and I lost the guard both times...so now I'm back to unprotected, 'commando' mode. I made the mistake once of thinking I could be like Kelly Slater and plow right into a big wall of white-water, staying up-right above all that commotion while I floated over it to a cleaner section beyond(aerials are NOT in my repertoire...YET!). What actually happened(maybe even to Kelly in his early years!)was...I went down immediately in an avalanche of whitewater, making contact numerous times with many parts of my fairly new board along the way. I ended up with a deep cut above my right heel down to but luckily not into my Achille's tendon. That was from the razor sharp trailing edge of my main/center deeper fin(It was an old school Fins Unlimited center box set up...with side bite FCS fins). It hurt & bled a lot! I only got out of the water when I saw a shark near me though. Because of that, all my fin trailing edges are now incredibly dull...an easy task with a metal or wood file...or even sandpaper! Re: leashes...I learned without them...they didn't exist back then. We eventually got tired of swimming and copied someone's bright idea of using homemade stretchy leashes fashioned from hardware store bungee cord...sold by the foot...what a deal!...And was glad I had THAT in Barbados at Soupbowls(1972)! I always wear a leash now, commercial/surf shop brands of course. And not just because it's required by the lifeguards at Stuart Beach. In BIG waves, duckdiving can be very dicey. There I prefer to get away from the board, just like when I wipeout...and let the leash hold on to the board until things settle down.

did the same thing to my foot in cr about 10 years ago, different time took a fin across the back of my 5,4mm wettie cut right through the wettie and my back, happened on my calf once too thank god again for wetsuits that time. this summer was the biggin though, fin above my right eye to the skull, and a side fin down the center of my lip, ahhh war stories. but, if you want to limit injuries from your board, dont use "training wheel" type fins, loose the leash! the reason i as well as all you were injured by fins is more the leashes fault then the fins. hows them soft fins gonna help when the nose of your board goes through your cheek and knocks your teeth out? (happened to a friend) and for everyones sake, practice duckdives with your foot, you'll get deeper, further, and wont get dragged backwards as far (crashing into others). plus less huge dents on your boards

Happened to a friend of mine in Portugal, but he landed fins up on his rusty starfish. He was sharing a camper with another guy, and got a few funny looks from the locals, every time they stepped out of the van with one walking like John Wayne.

Protec fins are good when the surf is real. I took a wipeout one time that landed me right on my back fin, luckily just my toe and not something else. Anyway I cut my toe to the bone with the super sharp edge of a performance glass fin. It was not fun, and had me out of the water for a week of my vacation.

I started surfing too with a friend's board that had one of those bungee-chord leashes, in the days before surf shops etc. When I invariably wiped out, by the time I resurfaced the board always seemed to be speeding directly towards my head with the recoil from the leash. It definately taught me to protect my head!

Look at it from a different angle. She is going the right way or at least I presume she is. It looks like the shot is taken from deep under the water looking up at a diagonal perspective. Mighty confusing though at first glance. LOVELY PHOTO!

Those are Pro Teck fins, rubber edged clear polycarb. Really nice fins, and no chance of cuts. Def not glass-on though, so I'm sure there's some purists out there who'll say they're just not tight enough because there's no risk of severing a major artery while on spin-cycle.
