I think one of the heaviest issues is, why if he was so ill, allowed to travel unaccompanied, or indeed to travel at all?
the vanity project Nov 12, 2010 Rating: 1
Hahaha just imaging Ed messaging you: “Off to bed Younss, no supper tonightâ€
Younes Nov 10, 2010 Rating: 4
VP, you right, no pb with giving additionnal info & that kind of stuff... It's the paternalistic ton of some interventions that sometimes bug me... Whatever
soutie Nov 10, 2010 Rating: 0
yip, but they did put up that chrissmassy advert for their shop. sickening.. only 9 weeks to go...
the vanity project Nov 10, 2010 Rating: 1
Huh? Bearing in mind they run MSW for the benefit of all (without a subscription model) surely they can chip in to clear up confusion and express their own opinions without it being an intrusion on your day mate. What happens when you get invited around to some-ones house for dinner, do you ask them to be quiet and host the evening in silence while you talk to the other guests all night and eat the free food?
Younes Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 3
Let the guy RIP. BEN or any MSW admin, I'd personnaly appreciate if you could leave the users discuss without interfering. Any user who wouldn't be happy with the web site would quite, period. Thanks

Well put Kaptain Kook...I've been wondering the same things. Some of us are not that familiar with the logistics & complexities pro surfers & their commercial sponsors, contest officials, photogs & media types deal with during contests. To me, Billabong and ASP seem to have been kinda irresponsible regarding AI's unfortunate departure from the Puerto Rico contest due to illness. Seems like he didn't get much help from anyone. I hope I am wrong. Just saying it's ALL about the money only confuses me more. I kinda know how the world works. I just don't want to see a "Billabong/Andy Irons Memorial" Pipeline contest(slogan?: "IT'S ON!) until I know more about Billabong's responsibility for Andy Iron's (& other sponsored contestants)well-being before, during and after contests.
Kaptain Kook Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 2
Ok, first of all AI to me was not only one of the finest surfers, but his success made him a celebrity, he was famous. That put him in the public domain, the public connect with his fame and of course they even care. I am certainly not speculating on anything sleazy rather the shortcomings of the treatment of a top athlete in his prime, by a global professional association (asp), and his benefactors (sponsors). Rumours are just that, i don't take too much notice.
archibald gruntfuttock Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 2
thats just the point, it isnt 'gossip'. having said that I would wish to make it clear that just as dudette says I wish no bad karma on anyone including the irons family and certainly not andy's memory. but covering up real problems doesn't help either. but fair dues this probably isn't the time or the place.peace.
Spongerdudette Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 1
Oh right okey dokey Ben, my bad for ''wrongly'' accusing you then.
Ben Freeston Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 1
@spongerdudette - I don't know what comment you're talking about - categorically I can tell you we haven't deleted any comments from anyone discussing the rumours surrounding this.
Ben Freeston Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 0
I'm not suggesting anything, we're not a gossip site, I'm just saying you're free to suggest what you like and your conspiracy theories about our moderation tactics are unfounded.
Spongerdudette Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 1
That's true Ben about it's better to celebrate AI's passing. But you've forgotten one thing here, and that is people/gutter tabloid will always have a field day saying that this happened or that happened which a large majority of the time is incorrect until the truth is out. I don't think that Kaptain Kook's comment is at all ''controversial'' or ''rumour mongering'', just questions that people want the answers to, and ones that I have been discussing with another user on here. Some people seem to love spreading nasty and incorrect rumours for whatever reason, and I actually believe that Soutie was trying to point this out in his now deleted comment about incorrect information and ''rumour mongering'', and no disrespect to either AI or his family was intended. It's a shame that you deleted it because it just might of stopped people's nasty/incorrect judgement of a great surfer, or didn't you want to upset the sponsor??
archibald gruntfuttock Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 2
I entirely agree. I guess time will tell. one thing you can guarantee tho is that the surf meeja will only tell us what they want us to hear for their own purposes. ie; not wanting to jeopardize sponsorship deals. any one saying otherwise will be denigrated (stab mag) and that cant be right either can it? are you seriously suggesting there are no drugs in the surfing industry?
Ben Freeston Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 0
We don't delete controversial comments. We do sometimes delete inane, purile or offensive comments. We're quite happy with debate and discussion but we're not gutter tabloid press either and for us there's no story in rumour until it's become fact. Even then we're first and foremost a surf website - there's more to gain in celebrating life than obsessing on the manner of death.
archibald gruntfuttock Nov 8, 2010 Rating: -2
know what you mean, its almost like there was more to this than meets the eye. But what possible reason could there be for hiding anything. oh yeah I remember, money. lets see who's shitting themselves by timing how long this post stays up.
tjo Nov 5, 2010 Rating: 1
great posting jogs, brings a tear still. these are the images that make it clear how wide spread this was felt. like someone said weds, we lost one of our tribe, chief dark horse, it's nice to see him, peacefully portrayed here with wings. i hope he knew before he left how much he was loved and accepted.
Portpipe Nov 4, 2010 Rating: 1
he really was an inspirational character, this might have an element of humour in it but it definitely wasnt in bad taste
Get Joggly Nov 4, 2010 Rating: 2
The Bay is home to many Pro , celebrity , industry and totally surf stoked people , AI passing has sent a shock wave thru our surfing community. However the sadness is already forming a powerful inspiring upbeat energy. Like Andys surfing. The talk is of a powerful even spiritual Hawaiian season to come ! BRING IT ON . Charge hard for the family. RIP
archibald gruntfuttock Nov 8, 2010 Rating: 1

Coelacanth Nov 4, 2010 Rating: 0
Vanity was just messing with the usually 'soooo delety' Joggly there, Devil's advocate(Or are you messing with us? Hmmmm). A little word play is all. Not being an art critic.
Coelacanth Nov 4, 2010 Rating: 0
Veeps was just messing with the usually 'soooo delety' Joggly there, btw. Not being an art critic.

One man's 'street art' is another man's 'graffiti'. Humor is one way to cope with death, especially one this preventable, unbelievable and untimely...if you've ever been to a funeral reception you'll know what I mean, maybe. Andy's pro surfing contest/'career' image to the surfing world was one of irreverence to the demi-god Kelly Slater. Which made for great theater for the 'sport'. I'd like to think he'd appreciate the humor, irony, irreverence...and maybe even the poke at commercialism...I see here.
Ed Magicseaweed Nov 4, 2010 Rating: 3
If you look n Stabmag's site: http://www.stabmag.com/ you can see another example of an artist taking to the streets to celebrate Andy. He cared more about his fans than the media and I think he'd approve.
Devils advocate Nov 4, 2010 Rating: 1
Did you read the caption? Or are you suggesting this is some sort of mindless vandalism?
