Water temp either side of South Africa = 10 - 17 degrees Current water temp. in Tynemouth = 9 degrees Current water colour in Tynemouth = Brown / grey I know where I'd rather be, even with the 'concrete pills'

Apologies, I meant my comment to be about the photo. At the Hoek, the clearer the water, the colder. Hope that's clearer. But not colder. The coldest water I've surfed in in SA was not far from the Hoek, at 2ft, and it was so clear and glassy that I couldn't always see the wave, and sometimes it was like I was floating over the sand below. Ice wouldn't have melted in my wetsuit. But at least you can warm up on the baking beach with the bikini-clad.

Wearing a 3/2 doesn't make the water cold! Anyway, that shot is beautiful. I would love to surf in water like that everyday. Atlantic City - hell, the majority of the East Coast, has much darker water. You want cold, come here around February or so. Better bring your 5/4/3 and your 6mil booties and gloves.

I've surfed in AC when the water temp. was 34 deg. 5/3 was fine. Until you had to duck dive 5 or 6 waves.

surfers in Cape Town are generally abit tougher than their northern counterparts, hence the lack of booties. down here you gotta deal with big, powerful waves, big, aggravated sharks and testicle-destroying cold water. But you take it on the chest, swallow a few concrete pills and harden the funk up. All they guys whining about it not being cold should come down to CT in summer with their 3/2's...
