That is no slab. That is just a hollow wave. Otherwise my local reef break is also a "slab", especially on med-low tide.

I always try to stand squarely in the center of the board, facing forward, and stay straight as possible. Never bending the knees and hands straight down like a guard at Buckingham Palace. And that sirs, is how you surf a wave like a proper gentleman. And this will result in the least deductions from the finicky judges from China and Russia.

It seems like once a wave has a bit of a drop and a nice hollow barrel, they call it a "slab". Let me guess, the right is called "the pit."

if youre devoted enough to surf one spot only forever, by all means, run the show. but if youre gonna leave your home break for even 1 session up the coast, or a quick trip to the tropics, then as they say "aint your bitch, just your turn!" dont be surprised to find a bunch of dudes all over it.

Was just about to post saying I thought this was 'The Slab' and not El Quemao which is further down the coast. When I was here the local spongers were charging some onshore bombs at this place!

Didn't get to surf this last year due to a smashed up hand a few weeks before heading over, sniff :( . Although I've heard this wave commands respect.

That looks like El Quemao opposite the La Santa right. Its a complete beast. I am always happy to leave this one to the locals, whether they crouch or not!

tjo's avatar

tjo Dec 16, 2010 Rating: 9

this is because... in the action sport of "wave riding" or "surfing" an individual will swim out to sea with a small floatable device, and he will swim with this device under his torso in the direction the waves break, then when the gent has reached "planing" speed he will stand up, and "drop in", or slide out in front of the wave, and attempt to remain on his feet for as long a period of time as possible, this takes a fair bit of balance, adjusting and readjusting ones weight, this my friend is probably why this gent here is "crouching"..... BECAUSE HE'S SURFING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that a serious question? Do you only ever surf frontside? Have you never seen any other pictures of surfers pigdogging?
