CWS was kind enough to give some free technical expert advice... don't see why everyone is so down on it

i can understand about the spots but the way you said it just made you sound a bit patronising is all and its called stopping down not closing down and your right about the spots showing up at smaller apetures its because of the depth of field that they show up which is increased when the lens is stopped down

Great photo, I'm sure a lot of people would like to see this made available to buy as a print. Great effort!

Love what you've done with this shot. But it would have been so much better if you'd just taken 2 minutes to clone out the dust on the sensor that's been made to really stand out by closing the lens right down (I'm guessing F22). Would have been a worthy +5.

Dude, I actually checked the photo for these dust spots, and I can honestly say, my computer screen has more spots than the photo, and I clean it once a week.
sdfjkljklsh Jan 29, 2011 Rating: 3
Agreed, wishihadanickname. Didn't see any dust spots in the photo until I scrolled up and down and noticed some dust spots moved and some didn't.

I didn't notice any dust spots, my laptop screen is bloody covered in dust. Great photo!

The surf has been pumping, just came inside for 10 mins to upload pics and back out for a surf. the last thing I want to be doing when the surf is pumping is touchy up dirty sensor!

Cold water photog is right from A to Z... he could also have added that the camera needs to be on a monopod... And it is a beautiful shot!

Like I said Sneaky K, I love this shot. But there are dust spots all over it which, for me, are distracting and spoil what would otherwise be a definite +5er. I'd be pretty miffed if I 'd bought a print that had black marks all over a clear blue sky. To get this effect a slow shutter speed had to be used I'd guess around 1/30 or 1/15 of a second. The only way to do this, in this sort of light, without using a neutral density filter, is to set a small lens aperture, it's that simple. The dust spots are on the sensor and only show up this sharply when a small lens aperture has been used, don't ask me why, but I know for a fact they do. All I'm saying is that a couple of minutes in a dreaded image editor using the clone tool to get rid of the spots would have made this one of the best shots I've seen on here for ages... Apologies if my terminology isn't to your liking, perhaps you'd like to enlighten me.

Surely if he had spent 2 minutes cleaning the lens he would have missed the shot!

those are brain matter particulates, jon jon was blowing minds out there!!
soutie Jan 28, 2011 Rating: 1
how picky can you be. he is talking bout those few dust speck things in the sky, but look at them, its trippy, it makes the photo look like a hologram or 3D. brilliant effect, if unintentional.
Zac Gibson Jan 28, 2011 Rating: 3
if your going to be critical of other peoples photos and sound all clever knowing f stops you should at least get your terminology correct when doing it, as for the photo i really like it and cant see which dust things you were on about and it is worth +5!
