Way I hear it, giant cruise ships full of fat New Yorkers are going to be anchored off this break so that the Slobovians can learn surfing. And they're going to shadow the break with their ships to make it easier for the poor dears.

Ah yes.....the war of 1812....interesting war. gave us our national anthem although the song wasn't about us fighting but rather hunkering down and praying. Thankfully the Britts can't shoot worth a damn. As for getting our asses kicked..well......you'd have to listen to the other song from the same era that barely lost out to the star spangled banner entitled "GO Back, It's Not Real Bacon"

Coelacanth's avatar

Coelacanth Feb 20, 2011 Rating: 0

HA...You are correct sir...and I salute your knowledge of our common histories. I was appalled when I recently read some of the details of that misguided American attack & defeat by British-Canadian loyalists...especially the criminal arson committed by the Americans on so many Canadians structures. Which was what had the Brits so pissed off that they later felt justified in putting the newly constructed White House in Washington D.C. to the torch. Much of the REAL history of America is embarrassing...just like any other country. But everyone is a product of their times...for better or worse. Canada treated the indigenous people of continental North America much better than the USA did. I can't recall reading what started that stupid War of 1812...except that the Brits kept grabbing American and suspected British navy deserters off American merchant ships and pressing them into the war against Napolean and the French.

There IS an inspiring & famous concrete statue of a handsome bull moose in Cow Bay though...standing guard over the nearby Silver Sands Beach & Cow Bay since 1959...and patriotically restored in 1992(as part of Canada's 125th year birthday bash)!

Jack Glick's avatar

Jack Glick Feb 20, 2011 Rating: 1

...you're right, only you guys have interesting stories about fighting for freedom. Except for that one time we kicked your ass in 1812.

Coelacanth's avatar

Coelacanth Feb 20, 2011 Rating: 1

Much as I hate to risk ruining the Cow Bay 'name mystique' with facts and history...I feel compelled to divulge what I learned on Wikipedia...one of many sites about Cow Bay that appeared magically when I Googled four words...Cow Bay Nova Scotia. The area around Cow Bay was part of a land grant to a Robert Cowie and one other person (whose name I have already forgotten after reading it 5 minutes ago)...in 1763. Like some of you...I was hoping for some kind of story about escaped & free-range cows fighting for their freedom too...but sometimes the truth is just damned mundane and uninspiring. And it is Canada after all. Sorry

Wales-surfer. - A narrow minded comment. One of the great things about surfing is the search takes you to some of the most awe inspiring places on the planet. It frequently delivers glimpses of mother nature at her most impressive. Wether that's the sacred view from the green room or first light on glassy corduroy stacked to the horizon. Surfing IS all about what you do on the wave but if you fail to recognise the beauty around you whilst doing it then I'd suggest your soul is dead.

I knew without even seeing where the location was, that it was nova scotia . Iam originally from England and well was spoilt for choice living in sub tropical temps for the better part of 12 years in usa and oz before i moved up to canada , and well although i dont do the wolly winter surfing sessions , Not my bag sorry too cold . I however remain to say nova scotias the BOMB come summertime . Big up to the cold ocean goers , nice pic and happy days .p

You get creative in these conditions: dive socks inside your boots; fuzzy dive inner pull-over and rash guard inside your 6-4 wetsuit; thickest booties available (get them so you can get them off with frozen fingers; thick lobster gloves (reduce surface area at all costs). Even at my age that'll keep me in the water for more than an hour when the air is below freezing, and the water at or above. Of course, in those conditions the crowds get ... oh, wait. No crowds.

7's avatar

7 Feb 21, 2011 Rating: 1

Ok, you've put a bee in my bonnet. I need to search these things out. The only thing I've found online so far are Xcel scuba wetsuits. Do you have a link? I dread days I have to use my 6mm suit, because it's so damned hard to get into and out of.

mcquaidm's avatar

mcquaidm Feb 21, 2011 Rating: 2

I'd have to say I'd agree with your comment about getting cold after only an hour surfing in February in Nova Scotia. I've been surfing for about five years and up until I bought the latest Xcel 6mm wetsuit w/ the Bamboo liner along with 8mm Bamboo boots and 6mm Bamboo glove - I FROZE TOO! But now I wear all these PLUS a inner shirt liner and I SWEAR on my grandmother grave I can last 3 hours!! I know, I'm surprised too. Also, NEVER wear FCS "winter" boots cause they SUCK! Funny, with this picture I know the guy that lives there...ha. Don't worry, he worked he a@ss off for it!! Cheers!

luke sullivan's avatar

luke sullivan Feb 20, 2011 Rating: -1

you call that getting creative...you poor buggers! I hate the cold but respect anyone who can tolerate it! Well done!I don't think I could suit up in any kind of way you describe and enjoy it,so hat's off to those who do!Nice photo,it's inspirational to see people from different countries BEING surfers for real and not pretending.Imagine this on a sunny, warm, glassy day,and you'll find me with a big smile...otherwise i just have to appreciate your photo and the feelings i get from it,(still smiling just don't want to jump in it!:)

not a fake at all maybe touched up but i look at this spot everyday. THe wave here can be amazing on the right swell direction yes stand up tubes on occasion. THis winter has been amazing on average 4 of every 10 days overhead. Cold water is no problem if your psyched. Was much harder 15 years ago! New suits heated vests and common sense and 2 hour sessions for the average weekend warrior. Thanks for the positive vibes regarding respect for cold water surfers, I always say if you are a surfer you would get out there too!

Sorry I was just making a joke after the number of 'its a fake comments' on yesterday's photo-of-the-day. Though it would be funny but clearly not. I do make it out in the cold although the UK's cold winter water 6-7 degrees is probably near tropical compared to cowbay. Comming out of the surf makes the air temprature seem so warm after 2 hours of the water sapping your heat!! Love it.
