Jerseysurfer, I took a look at your other shark photo and you were right, it is a sand tiger. From that angle it looked to me like a great white. Anyway, awesome photo!

Never thought so many people would argue over what type of shark. I know it looks like a white shark from the original pic but I'm pretty certain its a sand tiger. The only thing that would prove it is some video I shot but basically the tail on this guy was non-symmetrical with the top portion being pretty long (unlike great white) and it had two almost symmetrical dorsal fins (nothing even close to the size of a white shark). I just put another pic on my profile of a close up and you can kind of see that its huge bulky nose is almost unhinged form the mouth which is what is characteristic of sand tiger. I'm no expert but I've watched enough shark week in my life to know the difference between a white, bull and tiger... let me know if your still unconvinced that its not a white shark...

I agree. I'm a diver, and those are really the only sharks we see around wrecks in the outer banks.

Coelacanth's avatar

Coelacanth May 20, 2011 Rating: -2

Jersey Surfer...Your description of this shark's asymmetric(compared to a great white's)tail and largish 2nd dorsal fin matches the video, pics and other descriptions of sand tiger sharks I've seen. These guys are supposedly very abundant off the OBX in the summer months according to divers and those who would know. The dark, empty eye cavity(the first thing crabs and birds go for with dead fish)where it's eye used to be made it look like a great white from a distance with no other details.

don-ti's avatar

don-ti May 19, 2011 Rating: 0

it is a sand shark and it happened a year ago. I just googled a washed up shark on NC beach. Supposedly it was caught by a fisherman but got away, but was to tired to swim and was dragged in by the current

JerseySurfer's avatar

JerseySurfer May 19, 2011 Rating: -1

No way buddy, this pic is from last week after the huge swell came through. S-turns was beat to hell and there was so much water flooded the beach there was this river about 1-2 feet deep absolutely dredging down the beach for at least the mile that I walked.

@Jerseysurfer....post some more pics...this is a Tiger Shark...not a Sand Tiger. There so many indicators on that pic that say Tiger Shark. Must have been pretty rough out there...

so most of the time i was shooting video but i just put up another pic buddy and i might be able to make more pics from the video. check out the link i found from google, this is almost exactly what it looked with its tail out of the water... http://www.kenbondy.com/sand_tigers.htm

...and to everyone saying this can't be a great white due to the location (NC), I've gotta call bull. We've had NUMEROUS sighting of great whites up in New Jersey over the last decade, last year being especially high. If you don't know 100% what it is/was, it's only a guess.

Sand tigers have hooked jagged teeth and even though its tough to see, that shark's gum/jaw line says triangular teeth. Sand tigers also have a more rounded snout that sticks up slightly and the real sign that this is a great white is the eye. The eye is black, whereas a sand tiger's has a visible pupil and colored iris.
