Fantastic shot, really captures the heaviness and atmosphere of this wave and it's setting, dread to think what is lurking............

Don’t get me wrong; I find the e-bomb (5-3 in winter & 3-2 in summer) gets me 2 hours water time in a session (possibly more if I was in better shape). I’d even go so far as to say that in a less flexible suit I’d get knackered sooner (note to manufacturer; key stash zip falling apart). Normally 2 hours is all it takes to get my stoke levels to the point where it balances the effort needed to pay for them (prayer; let there be a wave soon). Anyway, in my travelling days I was surfing a place not that far from this when I saw a fin cruse past me that was as tall as I was sat on my board! Fortunately, that was as far as my encounter and story goes (apart from having to paddle in through what seemed like the longest lull i’ve ever known). Point is, unless there’s some kind of tooth proof, crush proof, suit with a built in aqua lung that allows for longer than normal hold downs I’ll remain content with couch surfing this one. Thanks Ruby (in the dust?).

Sunsets breaks on a deep water reef and ussually loses alot of power quite soon after its broken, as it hits a deeper channel. Surprizingly, the hold down is not that bad for the size of the wave and you generally pop up in a safe'ish' position (not always though). Getting caught on the inside at Dunes (nearby) on a 4 or 5ft day will eat you alive far worse than this monster actually will. Great pic.

get over it already. You (especially you) are more likely to trip over your leash and break your neck.

mindwalkr, Neil T, ... ups, you're right about Hout Bay (looks so close in that photo)

"Kom" is short for "Kommetjie". Would you say "California is a left" ? Doesn't really make sense does it sir ?
mindwalkr Jun 8, 2011 Rating: -1
Kom is a left. That is Sunset with Hout Bay houses in the background.

Now that's more like it. Cracking shot of a proper wave. with some lucky sod tucked right into the heart of the barrel. Not some posh promo closeup of a flash wet suit. 5+++

Awesome shot, looks like a beast with huge jaws and a white mane about to chomp him!
