Ok, great shot, and i'm a big fan of all of your work. But what's with the recent trend in surf photography to shoot with something blocking the photo? I just want to see the sick wave!
jacatero Sep 13, 2011 Rating: 2
The trend comes from the fact that most surf photographers are shooting with a 400, 500 or even 600mm lens. This zoom combined with a low f/stop allows closer objects to be thrown out of focus while keeping the further subject in focus. It is an artistic way to show depth of field. I feel the trend caught on by accident simply due to the fact that not a lot of photographers do not want to change lenses on the beach. They will shoot with that they have on hand. I personally think this technique looks great when done correctly. Using a zoom lens in this manner allows for shoot though shots like this one. Although, it appears the photographer used a 200mm for this shot (I could be wrong).

You can only see so many photos of sick waves without getting ... sick of it. Just my humble opinion, but it's the stuff that I can see with the wave that tells a bit of a story and really makes me wanna be there.

It does give it some local flavor...I suppose you've got a problem with big-booty-bitches too? C'mon Adam...I dare ya!...I'm NOT talkin' about moose here either.

No worries, glad to help. Like I mentioned earlier there is a right and wrong way of doing it. It's a nice shot but I think the shrub smack in the middle of the photo as you mentioned is a little distracting. I feel if the photographer moved in a little more towards the shrub the branches could have created an edge of the photo more and framed out the wave a little better. He could have done this and determined this one was better, who's to say. Either way, that is one sweet lineup. Drop the camera and paddle out.

jacatero - Thanks for explaining this one. I'm not knocking anyone's talent or ability, just a personal preference of mine. While I'm familiar with the technique I hadn't thought about changing lenses on the beach. That makes sense. I like a point of reference in the foreground, I just think this one fills a bit too much. Cheers.
