Does'nt stretch of coast have that magic place where its always twice as big and thumping. 3.5' @ 17 sec's = 8 ft. face, a few of the waves will be larger and then at the magic spot even larger yet. A little late i know, but had to chime in.

To Ben the Administrator, If the swell height listed is from when the photo was taken, why does it change so often? For example earlier today it said 3.5 ft, then 3 ft, now it says 2ft. I've noticed this on a bunch of other photos too. Curious

Look at the shoulder on the very left of the photo and its way smaller than that of the breaking face, and further down the line its probably smaller. Only idiots don't know that forecasts give the average wave height, and odd waves maybe up to twice the forecast height. U won't even notice a tusami in the open sea, but you will notice it when it hits land. Great work MSW.

Heres an idea, Get off your arses and go to Puerto to experience the place for your self. Not only will most of you not surf this place due to how heavy it is in the water, instead of judging it on a computer, you'll also see that all the beaches to the north and south will most likely have 3.5 ft faces. Puerto is a sick animal that happens to produce pumping waves from next to nothing...

Ben Freeston's avatar

Ben Freeston Nov 7, 2011 Rating: 9

There's no wave buoy there to validate the forecast but here's the basic maths. 3.5ft@17seconds will create, under average circumstances, faces in the 8ft range. Then the waves on any given day will vary in distribution from below this height (the significant height) to up to twice that height for the largest waves. That's potential for a 16ft face from that swell. All this without factoring in the refraction here specifically (a significant factor at the break) or assuming that the forecast might have under called the peak of the swell.

shunyata's avatar

shunyata Nov 8, 2011 Rating: 4

maths is English and math is American. The English is probably historicaly "more" correct. From the perspective of flow 'maths' rolls of the tongue easier and seems more visual as doing the maths generally involves more than one operation and thus the "s" provides a plural sense of the doing. BTW shunyata means zero of philosophical zero in Sanskrit.

“Math” is short for “Mathematics.” “Maths” would seem to be short for “Mathematicss.” Anyone with so limited a perspective that plural words must, by definition, end in the letter S in order to make sense needs to reevaluate their position.

soutie's avatar

soutie Nov 8, 2011 Rating: 0

Ben, i bet you are now regretting the decision to put the days forecast up with the photos. must be like drawing teeth for you. cant you fit some fineprint next it, like a disclaimer... always consult patati terms and conditions bladibla blow it out your marmite starmangledspanner

Ben Freeston's avatar

Ben Freeston Nov 7, 2011 Rating: 0

The definition of deep in this case is half a wavelength so about 800ft for this swell, so it will have slowed already from that 25 knots quite some way before it breaks here (and that slowing is critical to the refraction that'll add to the wave size at this spot) but yeah absolutely in principle - the reason it's such a heavy barrel is because the wave is throwing that lip so fast as it slows down, which can create spray like that even in light onshore conditions.

ahinalu's avatar

ahinalu Nov 7, 2011 Rating: 2

...and a 17sec wave's moving ~25kts in open ocean and about what 15kts when it breaks. So, even on a dead calm day there will be >15kts of wind blowing in your face as you paddle down the face of a 17 sec period wave.

Gomas's avatar

Gomas Nov 7, 2011 Rating: 1

Right, lets clear one thing up, the 3.5ft is todays forecast for the break, not the forecast when the image was taken, it is cleary not F*ucking 3.5 ft even in hawaiian standards. So stop bitching, its a heavy wave enough said!

3.5 ft: if that is wave face height, it would make the surfers between ~3 and 7 inches high. I didn't know Mexicans were tiny people? It would be like Gulliver's travels if I went to surf there.

I have to agree to those stating that you are not familiar with reading surf forecasts, at least not appropriately. To me, this forecast is telling me that the surf will most probably look exactly like this picture. As others said already, theres a huge difference in swells of 3,5ft at 7sec, 12sec or 18sec. In England and NorthSea and so on you usually never even get to see a 12sec swell. But be advised, its different in areas underlying proper surfing conditions. Thank you MSW, i get quite the right information out of your reports!

Frozen's avatar

Frozen Nov 7, 2011 Rating: 2

I said "IF" it referred to wave face height. It was a joke. Of course we know what the dam surf swell ratings are, how wave height changes at the beach, refraction effects, bathymetry, period and amplitude (wavelength) of the swell and the effects of local conditions. I use the every day to go surfing and work on boats. However I still think the men are 7 inches tall.

No offence or anything but it seems a fair few of british surfers, or let me say users of this site, are not so clued up on surf forecasting. If you carry on reading to the right there is an equally if not more import reading which says 17 seconds. When combined with a 3.5 foot swell wave size will be far greater than 3.5 foot. So keep on reading to the right guys ;)
