Ive surfed there and tavarua resort owners pay the local chief, whom NOBODY disobeys, for the right to surf tavarua; our boat captain was too scared to let us jump in at tavarua 5 ft and no-one out because of spys with binoculars watching from the island..wilkes nearby costs nothing to surf however..

Pay to surf? Fat chance, I sneaked into many a restricted beach, and no one is going to stop me. Humans do not own the water so we can not say who can go in and who can't, and we cannot make a profit out of something we do not own.

pay to surf......this is what would happen if they charged me 1. some guy: hay dude you got to pay 2. me: fuck you (than i strip naked and jump in) 3. than i finish surfing and take a huge crap on the shore FIGHT THE BULLSHIT if you are anyone in the world and a surf spot is banned or some fee bullshit go in anyway cops and lifeguards are too fucking lazy to fish you out if every surfer in the world fought to keep spots alive and bullshit free areas wouldnt get blackballed or taxed. as surfers understand the we own the water or at least that is how it is in so cal and north FL IDK FIGHT IT

Since powergrooves is no longer with us I will pursue his line of thought!! Right first off,we all know that the artificial reef at Bournemouth is just a tax fiddle for that hotel,so when the fieving gits are gonna charge you to surf it --boycott it!!!! It's not like you get enough decent surf down there to warrent it anyway.

THERES ALWAYS ONE PERSON TRYING TO MAKE BAD OUT OF A GOOD SITUATION, AND WORSE OUT OF A BAD SITUATION! YEAH THE REEF WILL BE GOOD BECAUSE OF WAVES AND BAD (AT TIMES) BECAUSE IT WILL GET V BUSY. BUT BADRAT: STILL A LOAD OF CRAP!!!NOT A CHANCE THEY'LL CHARGE PEOPLE TO USE THE REEF/SEA. YEAH IT MAY HAVE DOUBLED THE COST, WHICH THEY HAVE THE FUNDS FOR. IT MAY GET V CROWEDED BUT THE LIFEGUARDS WILL REGULATE IT BY SPREADING PEOPLE OUT SO THAT THEY ARENT IN A MASIVE CLUSTER ETC ETC!!!...........P.S THINK YOU FIND A REEF IN THE SEA IS A LOT DIFFERENT TO A WAVE IN A SWIMMINGPOOL!!!

Absolutely: one life, but pay up? Take charge and invest in a good surf spot: cheap. Check out La Vista Nicaragua (.com). Talk to Dave, the Nica rep (country code 011). He has Lots for sale starting at $20,000.00, 1/2 mile from the best beach break in that country.

OOOyea the Bournemouth Artificial Reef, The tax fiddle for the hotel that's being built! A few coppers had there then. Of course you get so few decent waves there it'll cost a grand and half per wave to recooperate the cost's.It'll give you something to talk about in the flat times. Is TUBR NEWS still in print, THE best surf mag ever!

Cow Abunga's avatar

Cow Abunga Aug 14, 2008 Rating: 5

The Artificial reef that's being built has doubled in cost, it also has to be regulated or there will be chaos when on the clean days, be realistic. This is the first one in Europe, let alone Britain. You'd have to pay to go to a wave pool. Don't shoot the messenger!

BORAT.... what are you talking about! like SURFVILLE SAID, its absolute bullshit, why would you have to pay to surf in the sea, especially at bmth and boscy, why would you even say that! paying to surf in the sea is the most pathetic thing i've ever heard of! if they do that then they should charge every single person who swims in the sea or even puts their feet in it!

The National Trust own the carpark at Godrevy and charge relentlessly for 8 months of the year. How much of that money is going towards renovation of the Camborne sewage works to stop it spewing raw sewage into the Red River and onto the beach? Answer - Fuck All! Bandits!! Sorry about the rant, That's a beautiful picture Jason. I'd love to see water that clear at Godrevy again!

yes you have to pay but if you buy a season ticket for £90 or £80 if you buy it in january then yoou only have to go 18 or 16 times before it stars to become free. yes expensive at the begining of the year and only worth it if you surf often but it works

Let's not forget two things. Firstly, this is a stunning picture, liquid glass. Secondly, being involved with Bournemouth (Boscombe) reef, the break will be regulated which, sadly, means you'll probably have to pay to ride. Doesn't bode well for the better British breaks...

I HEARD THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT ARE GOING TO DISCUSS CHARGING PER WAVE. THE PLAN IS THAT YOU CAN BUY A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF WAVES FOR A FEE: FOR EXAMPLE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PURCHASE A SET OF 5, 10, 15 AND SO ON WAVES. THEY ALSO PLAN TO HAVE WARDENS TO KEEP A CHECK ON THIS WHO WILL HAVE THE POWER TO ISSUE ANYTHING FROM A FINE TO A PRISON SENTENCE.....

I just want to make the point that, yes, car parks with beach access (such as Croyde and Puts)are lining the pockets private individules. LOCAL INDIVIDULES who work hard maintaining the land they use and earn pittance over a short wet summer to fund a house, family and other local people and services. WE all have to earn a living and i bet most of us dont really put anything back into the communities where we live or surf. Alot of locals own season tickets and they dont come cheap. So pay your car park fee and feel good when you do because you are supporting a very fickle, fragile local economy.

sjm's avatar

sjm Aug 13, 2008 Rating: 0

Well the irony is that with the 2012 olympics coming up, the government is banging on about getting everyone to swim for free at their local pool by then, but you can't swim for free in the sea! It's not just the councils profiting though, with many of the car parks being private; we are lining the pockets of individuals and there's not even a hope the money will back into the local community. I agree about the sun tax, but I'm in the uk... there is no sun!

mg Aug 13, 2008 Rating: -2

Paying to surf is ridiculous. Boards, wetsuits, surf trips etc are expensive enough. That's why we surf, once you fork out for all the gear, it should be FREE!!

Tristy's avatar

Tristy Aug 13, 2008 Rating: 0

True enough, I've been put off going to Gwithian for that very reason (it's about £6 a day), I'd like it if the council were to give 'locals' a concession for this but it'll never happen....(they do in some clubs for the summer, why not beach car parks!) What really irritates me is that the fat lazy attendants don't turn up when it's raining so it's free! So essentially we're paying a 'sun tax'.

Brad86's avatar

Brad86 Aug 13, 2008 Rating: -3

I agree, the money seems to get stored then at the end of the tax year, the council has our cash left over so decide to blow it on random speed bumps in the most stupid places! we should build sea villages (tax free)!

sjm's avatar

sjm Aug 13, 2008 Rating: 1

Essentially it's already happening; you've gotta pay £5 min Croyde and £6 min Putsborough for the car parks, so that's not really free now is it? Money probably not going to a good cause now either.

my mate reckons it's only a matter of time until you'll have to pay to surf popular spots in the Uk, Fistral for example(no great loss there)...I thought it a daft theory to begin with but I'm thinking now it's probably in the minds of some local councils.....you gotta pay on quite a few beach's to launch surf ski's already around Cornwall....great pic by the way!

we stayed on the mainland so we didn´t have to pay. if you´re not staying on tavarua you can only surf cloudbreak on the weekend (saturday). that´s why we ended up surfing and shooting wilkes all the time.
