Holy mother of Moses. That would have had the entire park crew on it back in the day, from sunrise to sunset. Really sad in a way to see how the Dbn crews have just vanished. The Bay bank okes, the pier guys... hell you almost miss the sponge patrol that used to camp out by that old steakhouse at North (almost :-) haha

For sure redro, I have nets at my home break on the south coast and had a close encounter with a shark. The nets are just a deterrent, much the same as an alarm on you car.

Probably more just trying to have a dig at the surfers in Durbs cause they get to score such consistent waves, which barrel, waters warm and most breaks are sandbottomed. Maybe I wasn't to clear about the nets. Humble apologies. Nice to see the Durbinites defending their turf. lol

quote: The nets are about 656 feet (200 meters) long and about 19 feet (6 meters) wide. They are fixed to buoys anchored to the seabed in water about 40 feet (12 meters) deep. Sharks can swim over, under, and between them. Ive heard theyre taking some the nets out and if so Im glad, the amount of marine life the Sharks Board pull out/trap on a daily basis cant warrant the minimal protection they offer. Anyone whos paddled out to the nets or been out on a big enough day that it was breaking on them and actually seen them knows theyre not that effective and you get plenty sharks within the bays anyway. Point is, we take a risk whenever you surf in Durbs/Wild Coast or Cape Town but if youre a polished surfer from anywhere on that coast, you know that youve long ago accepted that inevitability and youre not really thinking about it when its breaking like this!

I am not trying to be argumentative so dont get me wrong , its just that you are contradicting yourself by saying as durban surfers we are stupid cause we surf with shark nets and we are killing animals but then you say there are spots you would love to have nets.I THINK this conversation is silly.SURFING is something that is born in you ,you love it or you dont ,since when did a beautifull wave start to mean so many different things to people just cause we live in a different places. All of us have a conservationist side to us , nobody thinks global warming is a good thing but to reverse what has already taken place is impossible. We are all unhappy about what is happening to the environment, but maybe we just need to learn how to make the best of a bad situation. You have to agree the wave is beautifull.

Well said shorey lover.

Shorey's avatar

Shorey Aug 20, 2008 Rating: -1

BTW last I checked the best waves are caused by favourable wind and nice sized swell.

Shorey's avatar

Shorey Aug 20, 2008 Rating: 0

Your point is?

st_ph_n's avatar

st_ph_n Aug 20, 2008 Rating: 1

Oh, and most of Durbs best waves are caused by man made things so... Greenpoints=O

st_ph_n's avatar

st_ph_n Aug 20, 2008 Rating: 2

Ha ha, stirred some feelings. No I don't come from Slaapstad and i've surfed at many spots that I wished had shark nets. P.E to Knysna there are some cool waves but some nice greymen as well. lol

Durbans beaches are its drawcard, people wouldnt come if they thought that Johnny would have them for dinner. Also I think chomped is slightly more appropriate than nibbled.

Stephen I think chomped would be slighty more appropriate than nibbled. The KZN coast is very sharky dude.

Guys in Durbs are useless. Why surf with nets? If you want to play in the sea prepared to be nibbled. End up killing a whole bunch of animals otherwise

That really is a perfect wave. Small but tubing and insanely well formed. Wow, just a great wave. Looks like its forming off that jetty, therefore you know where the takeoff is every time.....just plain awesome.

This is my local spot, and there have not been any shark attacks in Durban in all the years I've surfed here (11 years and counting). Yes it gets crowded just like any other spots, but not as bad as the North Shore!

Wonderful! The only explanation to the fact there's no one out might be that whity Joe & his mates are playing hide & seek in the line up, & they don't wanna let us play...
