Funny to read. I love Wijk too... regardless of one of the biggest steelfactories in the world. Note: The Netherlands treats all sewer water including industrial wastewater tertiary. Not like so many countries in the world where sewer-water floods raw into your surfspot! Looks can be deceiving...The Northsea is cleaner then the Mediterranean. So no two-headed sharks. Just some seals, seaguls and lots of alien seashells (brought in from the US)...and yes an alien view!
pippu Nov 29, 2011 Rating: 1
Ah, yes, the Dutch clean their water before letting it to the sea. However they practically don't do any recycling and they burn all their thrash together, generating toxic smoke which eventually affects the sea as well.
pippu Nov 29, 2011 Rating: 1
This story of the north sea being cleaner than the mediterranean sea is a fairytale told to all young Dutch who still believe it when they grow up, just like their canals being so clean you can drink from them... I agree one surfs where he can, and in the end I feel lucky to be able to surf in NL. However the North Sea water sucks, it is dirty, brown (not from sand and innoquous seaweed, as they believe) and very polluted. Just have a look to where all these oil platforms, wrecked oil tanks and last but not least all those nuclear plants are. Being proud of your land is ok, being a fool is not.

Holland isn't always great, we make the best of it. Anyway when your in the water your looking at the horizon, and she's beautifull. Everybody is enjoying his own wave on his own spot. I love my spot, I love Wijk. greetz fatty, team riobeninen.

I go up da road a few k's and there's nothing like the corus plant, lekker sand dunes and no line up. A nice place all round,be out there again soon.
M44rt3n Dec 4, 2008 Rating: 6
About the industrial plant behind the dunes. It is a place were Corus makes steel, so no big chemical things going on overthere. The combination of a 'relative' good surfing spot in a scenic landscape with suddenly a big industrial complex in the background gives it a surrealistic feel. Maybe it is a aquired taste.... When there is swell this place is crowded with locals and Amsterdam crowds.
bro Nov 22, 2008 Rating: 6
I think it`s a great pic, because being out there would propably freezing your nuts away...we all have to realize that we are living from the industry so we live with that or we stop wasting energy in the internet...
surfinnonstop Nov 20, 2008 Rating: -2
this is probably the most horrible photo ive ever seen
Seashell Nov 10, 2008 Rating: 3
Even if that is steam, it's just plain ugly... Beautiful backdrop my eyeball... I can't even begin to understand that... would you not rather surf unspoilt deserted beaches??!
Wasta Nov 10, 2008 Rating: 4
k-mart, how in hell is that a "sweet backdrop". Makes me so upset to see beautiful places ruined like this...
Anoukster Nov 10, 2008 Rating: 1
Oops, sorry.. Forgot to say this actually IS een great photo though!!
Anoukster Nov 10, 2008 Rating: 3
Why would somebody want to surf overthere? It's not like this is the only good spot in The Netherlands. I'd rather not get cancer while surfing!!
k-mart14 Nov 9, 2008 Rating: 1
Sweet backdrop. I'd love to surf there on a good day.

It's so great to see how the international surf community reckognises Holland as surfing nation with great potential. I do hope these foto's won't lure in the crowds though...
ben8626 Nov 9, 2008 Rating: 1
beautiful. lets hope this plague we call humanity has enough energy to smoke this planet out of existence ^_^
Didier Nov 9, 2008 Rating: 4
yeah that is just steam, you cant see the really tall thin ones the sulphur come out of! It is just like surfing off hartlepool and lookin down to redcar steel works!! how i miss it!
Mike Pearson Nov 8, 2008 Rating: 7
If I'm right, it's not as bad as it looks, most of that 'smoke' is actually completely harmless water vapour (steam). Though got to agree, it does look pretty awful!
BLatimer Nov 7, 2008 Rating: 4
Photography wise: Its a pretty cool pic. But from my standpoint i am super disappointed from it. I think this pic should be used by Surf-rider Foundation to show the reality in our Eco-Problem.
mozza Nov 7, 2008 Rating: 2
i hope these guys are wearing masks, just can't figure out how they can carry the oxygen tank ..?? Sad photo! i can imagine all that waste ending up in the ocean. a real proof of real love to the sport/lifestyle.

Ghengis, you need to go even further north mate, Northumberland Coast is the future!
timpebe Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 6
That is a Corus steelplant. Produces mainly stripproducts. When it smells of sulfur in the line-up it is good news: offshore.
Ghengis_the_shed Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 2
It's the Corus steelworks right?
Ghengis_the_shed Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 0
That, my friend, is a cracking shot - reminds me of the NE of England.
reef rat Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 9
you would probably glow in the dark after surfing there
westmonster Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 2
What kind of a factory is that?
Ric Weeks Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 3
Looks like Beijing or some other Modern Day Industrial Revolutionary site
