This is an awesome wave and rider, real surfers/boogers respect each other, only the kooks trying to act the part would be calling spongers gay when they see a picture like this. The aspect of the public looking 'from the outside looking in' is partly what makes what we do interesting and so much fun....Surfing dangerous looking waves, surfing in freezing conditions....etc is all part of the sense of well being and achievement we feel afterwards. I remember about 15 years ago watching a live weather report where a TV reporter was in extreme coastal conditions shouting dramatically at the camera.....big waves, howling winds etc....and this surfer ran past behind her trying to find a spot to get in for a surf......It was not a friend or anyone I know, but as I sat there in front of the TV chuckling away at the extreme worlds of the two people in the TV screen, I felt really proud to be part of the world the lunatic going for a surf existed in. I f*cking love this sh*t we do. Cheers for the photo.

you know something, after reading the comments about this guy risking his life on this wave (which most of you would just piss yourself), im embarassed to say I surf the same ocean as some of you. The ocean belongs to us all, remember that. We are ALL lucky that we have been given waves to ride. Waveriding is not about being a f*ckin prick which most of you people have displayed, its about a common love for the feeling of being free for a few moments. Who are YOU to say whats right and wrong? I love surfing more than anything in this world, hands down. But I like to boogey board too. What a mutant. real heavy. By the way. There's more to tow in surfing than standing up and turning. You have to have the balls to actually drop in on a wave that is more than 5 times your height. Like I siad previously better to have just used fippers and throw the bag away. Leave the slabs and big waves to the surfers. Bleh bleh bleh.. I think if you haven't been on wave like this then you will never understand the motivation behind charging killer waves. After years of Moto-X big wave tow surfing has been my new fix since 2001. And after surfing killer slabs and big waves the wipe outs still don't compare to Moto-x wipe outs. All you need to surf waves like these is the stength and power in your body to handle the wipe-outs and trust me it's not a matter of if you wipe-out if you tow surf and you charge its only a matter of time before you wipe out. Personal best wipe-out 20foot left hand barrel at Papatowai NZ the pressure aS the barrel closed out blew my left ear drum shit I hate tennitus... Personal best wipe out on Moto-X hitting train tracks and broke my legs and back... HMMMMM I think I'll stick with charging big grunty killer waves just like this lovely looking wave. SURFER!!!!

Maybe this might help to put an end to the arguing. During the summer, I took my young daughter to Porth beach (Newquay) to teach her to bodyboard. Some standup surfers came along with their boards, but the lifeguard told them that you can only bodyboard there (due to the narrow beach). They seemed ok with that, and went back to their vehicle and got out some bodyboards instead. When they came out of the water later on, they seemed really happy. My point is that it doesn't matter how you surf, as long as you can just get out there and enjoy the waves. Peace and respect to all wavelovers.

the simple facts are that boogie boarders are a total pain in the ass for surfers,because they dont stand up and they have those fins to catch a wave they make it hard to coexist in the line up,whereas surfers from all kinds of places with all kind of boards and varied talent can work out a system for getting along,as soon you throw in the boogies you have ugly situation.it pisses you off to have to deal with thier crutches,no stand-up drops,fins to catch the wave etc etc.on the other hand when its all surfers its all fair for everyone or at least even odds from the start.surfers dont anything like this to boogie boarders,unless they use their crutches to piss you off so much you just stuff them

Abstract plane "questionable statements that contradict from previous post" My post is my basic opinion as a boogie and a stand-up. Please don’t get defensive just because I don’t conclude that stand-up is better and so doesn’t fit you’re one track thinking and you’re chip on shoulder arrogant desire for recognition as superior to all others given that you are a stand-up. I can drop any wave with fins on and I regularly out paddle people. Years of practice makes it possible for me to turn in tight to the lip at the close out and flip some sick air when I am body boarding. That took me years of practice to master. When I arrive at a working break I have both disciplines to choose from because I have both my boards. When my girlfriend comes with me she can also choose what she wants to do. She generally body boards because she hates the ridiculous arrogant behaviour of STD Uppers. I personally don’t notice it.

On average a board surfer gets much longer ride with smooth long floaters and powerful pumps for speed for example. It is the incredible feats that take many years to master. By the way. Bodyboarding: I do this cos I can surf bigger waves for longer and more safely than standup. I find I need to maintain an incredible level of fitness to sustain this sport becasue of the drag I have in the water. Hence the fins. Bodyboarding is more of a sport for commited swimmers When my leash breaks I like the fact that I still have fins. Standup: When I standup surf I can surf big waves but they tend to have to be much cleaner and neat and tidy. I like standing up because I can see the wave and like the turns and the leans just like snowboarding. I also like the ease of the paddle out. Standing up is however no great feat of genius given a little practice by anyone.

Well said Soutie. I couldnt realy give a damn if this wave was being surfed on a Door. As long as personal thrill and enjoyment is the cause I am on the fence. Being both a "Standup" and a "sponger" I think everybody should try surfing. Although I would recommend starting with standup, because sponging is so rad you wont be able to quit it, people should drop verbaly abusing people becasue they choose "other" crafts. When you are surfing you are FREEEeeee! FREE FREE! You are free from abuse, free from prejudice and free from the fuckery of modern life. When you are out surfing no government, no person can tell you what to do or think. Politics is pointless in surfing. As long as the Nu-surfers of this world can recongise that that is the ethos of any outdoor sport, the better that surfing will be for everybody. People that cannot walk in another mans shoes are very challenged in the IQ department. Sick wave and very brave of anyone to tackle this beast.

Do you know what? I'm sick of Moron "Stand up" Clowns spouting off about Bodyboarders....It really winds me up. Yes I am a "Sponging, Lie Down, Dickdraggin' Boarder" and I paddle out and drop in on heavy waves, and guess what? I do it with ONE LEG! That's right 1 effin' leg. Yeah I wouldn't mind having a pop at Stand up, but I don't have that choice. I am so bored with this continous slating of spongers/standups. Mild piss taking - no problem but why the rancour and really unpleasant sniping? It happens in almost every sport, certainly the ones I'm involved in. Skiing/snowboarding, hang gliding/paragliding. I'm a stand up and hang glider pilot, both paragliding and body boarding are far far more accessable at the beginning - hence the huge take up of both. However all four disciplines require a great deal of skill to get really good at. Sponging and stand up both have different areas of excellence - stand up on that wave - no f***ing way! Sponging on a 50+ foot wave - no f***ing way! Both are great fun so please can we at least see some acceptance of each others strengths and enjoy that massive thrill we all get from surfing/flying/sliding!

I recon this argument come down to functionality and control. Surfers would be gunning it to the shoulder, looking like they are basically just holding on, but a booger can calmy ride the beast, pop a spin in the barrel and come out. It may be quite a good adrenaline rush on a stand up, but you would miss most of the ride due to blind panic and fear. I'd much prefer to be on a sponge, it probably is easier, but why are wheels round not square...

riptide mag's website is full of sick shots, but this one is my favourite. it illustrates where the bleeding edge of bodyboarding is at today. the stand ups are missing the point - it's about the wave, not the rider/board. so you can stand up on a wave, good for you, get over it. you think bodyboarders at this level aren't able to ride stand up boards too - of course they can?! they're watermen. they can and do ride anything they feel like. a bodyboard is the weapon of choice for this wave. if it was a 2 foot, slack, 200m long ride, they'd be on a longboard.

Laird, Manoua and bunch of others surfers asked him if he needed a tow but he refused. Shoreylover, you like boogie boarding, good for you, have fun. Surfing a wave like this would be much more extreme because of the transition from prone to standing , not because it's too heavy for surfing, some crazies surf Waimea shorebreak. It definitely takes more skill to stand up. Does this affect me and you? No. I've tried bodyboarding and every other form of wave riding too and I find it boring, a teenage MTV kick rather than a soulful lifetime pursuit. Do what you enjoy and I'll do the same.

Because it is too heavy. Bboarders can ride any kind of wave. Surfing is limited in that sense. Pulling backflips and ARS`s takes a lot a shitload of coordination and timing my friend. As I said both are rad, neither is better than the other, they are two different sports. Why dont we compare tennis with basketball, both are played on a court.

This wave is probably, like I said before, shipsterns bluff. It looks very much like many of the bigger waves at that break.

That is possibly the most insane wave I've ever seen and I can't believe it's being ridden. How nuts have you got to be to see waves like that and paddle out? The abuse from stand ups is funny. If it's so easy, why not go and make some easy money doing stuff like this? I would play pro-basketball or something even though I hate it if it paid me to do what I wanted. It's got to beat 40 hours a week in an office. I rarely get any abuse for sponging as I tend not to surf until it gets over head high and then the gobby losers that like to abuse spongers can't make it out then. All the times I can think of aggro was when it was chest high or less. So if you can't deal with that, how could you deal with one like the one above?

Lots of bodyboarder/surfer conflict on this one. Yes, this shot is crazy and deserves respect regardless of whether you surf or bodyboard. But, this would be better if it were a surfer. Surfing is flat-out more difficult to do... YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE ATHLETICISM/QUICKNESS TO GET TO YOUR FEET BEFORE YOU GET WORKED OVER AFTER YOU CATCH THE WAVE. That aspect is not present in bodyboarding. Not to mention that when you get worked in bodyboarding, you are dealing with a SOFT board and you are already lying down instead of falling from your feet. I get it bodyboarders...share the waves...we are all enjoying the ocean, etc... but, waves being equal, surfers put more on the line for their love of the ocean just by virtue of standing vs. prone. Period.

I haven't bodyboarded much but all I can say to me the wipe is worse, it is nearly impossible to get yourself in a comfortable position to take the wipe if the wave closes on you. And drops are scarier to me as well. I find it easier to take a drop if I jump up, purely because it doesn't seem as big as when lying down. Sure, you can just hold on for dear life, but then bottom turning is much more difficult.
