Dude, wat is ur issue with body boarders?? u must've got burnt bad by one, the only pics u'v up are ones slating them, if u dislike them so much, why waste ur time Personally, the water's there to be used by whoever, fair play to anybody who takes that wave on, lying down or stadning up!!
OB homie Jan 28, 2009 Rating: 2
why? cause bodyboards are lighter and way harder to drop in on a big ass wave like that.. you have to get so much deeper on the wave or else you get eleavator dropped or blown over. thats pretty much why.....
DomHogan Jan 15, 2009 Rating: 20
its pretty funny how whenever a crazy wave comes on of a bodyboard on this website thing that everyone just goes nuts. but when a big waves of a surfer comes on everyone is just like "yeh thats pretty mad" and stuff like that i dont get it
biddy Dec 27, 2008 Rating: 3
how do you tow-in a body board, seems a bit ropey to me, do you start standing up & dive down for entry or remain on chest getting slapped around before entry, anyway fair play to the loon, cracking wave, massive balls & beautiful flippers, would love to see some tow-in body boarding around here

If arguing on the internet makes you retarded, then what does it make you when you criticize people who are trying to argue on the internet? Is that kind of like being so retarded that you cant even qualify for the special olympics?

All this "balls" trash?: here's a guy bouncing his large pair down a sick wave. But there's also huge balled guys fighting wars. Some kid with enormous balls wedged them into a pair of womens' jeans and kickflipped a 30 stair in my local metropolis just last weekend. Doesn't make them better men out of any of them, just shows that they're highly motivated (difficult to insure and a worry for their mums) If anyones interested there's a new winter sport, it's like snowboarding but you lie down on the board. The rush is intense because everything seems so much bigger. A 6 foot jump is like a 60 footer, some of the crashes are mean-as windings! Best of all you are neck deep in pow-pow most days. go to dub dub dub dot blowboarding dot com...

'Benny boy', I agree with you......I'm just trying to entertain myself by reading between the lines of a tired argument.....and 'reject', for gods sakes dude, do you really think we can be arsed?, I though I was bad at putting in concise, to the point comments....but be careful, 'el chris-the righteous' may come down upon all of us if our comments are not based around accurate discussions of the photo itself.
reject Nov 8, 2008 Rating: 1
Sheesh guys. Dont we all enjoy the ocean? Dont we all enjoy riding waves? Thats our common ground, our common place! Just like the density of water doesnt support our slightly more dense bodies(strange considering we're =/-80% H2O),so 2 the arguing does not support the current argument. Now b4 we rally up in anger consider the greats, Mike Stewart,Kelly Slater. I mention these 2 names soley based on rep for the individual dicipline. Who is to say which one is greater? Who can determine which man is better than the other? Is not each man different? Is not each sport different? When we look at the intrinsic differences of each sport we can see that there truly is no comparrison. Each individual might have a different opinion be it negative or positive on the actual comparrison... i'm yet to see a surfer repeatedly take and land super late free fall drop into a crazy phat slabing pits, only 2 bust out the bowl with a sick invert 2 air reverse (check out Cris James 1800-CALM) Likewise i've never seen a bodyboarder take off really deep get up backhand, both feet on the board(this is 2 technically remove dk as a possibility from the imagery ...) make the tighest of turn into the pit narrowly missing the lip of a beast barrel, set the rail, lean back and down to clutch a rail with their one hand and trail their other one into the face of the wave to slow them down and get serious barrel time...then, getting spat out onto an open face and pull back the phattest smoothest gouge b4 smackking hard off the closeout. Some guys might argue that one can stand up on a bodyboard, well i've seen a random surfer riding his surfboard, laying down i might add and bust a roll...there's crossovers and exceptions but if we get sucked into that we're gonna miss the point. Here's the point really well made by Wikipedia!!! "Difference" "Difference is the contrary of equality, in particular of objects. Differences can only be stated on the basis of a comparison or categorization. Since a complete comparison of objects or things is seldom possible in practice, only relevant or defining attributes are used for stating equality or difference. Similar objects are only different with respect to attributes of minor discriminative value. In order for something to be different, you must have something to compare it to." Can anybody argue that surfing is not different to bodyboarding? Can anybody make claims that bodyboarding is comparable to surfing? How then can we rally, support, get upset or angry about 2 things that are clearly so different? More so how can we argue? Fact: Bodyboarding and surfing is different!! Therefore all argument / comparrison of skill requirement, style ability etc is nullified Further argument would merely demonstrate lack of understanding on one of either 2 things: 1 The equality of bodyboarding and surfing 2 The meaning of the word "Different" Where i surf we have a tight comunity of surfers and bodyboarders all who have various skills abilities and talents some of us even some dissibilities, the wave is a solid ledge. Here sufers respect bodyboarders who are expected to take off on the crazee drops that the surfers cant make and when a surfer does attempt it and doesnt make it respect is not lost, stoke and credit is always given to awesome tube riding, hellman close outs, big spray and of course AIR, from both diciplines!!! It's alwyas a pleasure surfing with the crew, hope all u guys out there can learn something from this that respecting the differences makes all the difference :)
Stacie<3 Nov 8, 2008 Rating: 6

I'm a stand up and spend all my time surfing with a sponger. He skates really well but has no intension of becoming a stand up because he's a sponger and thats what he does and to be fair he charges. So all you stand ups knocking spongers just need to grow up. Each to their own, surely its just about getting your kicks, and we all get our kicks in different ways.
southcoastbbyyyyyyy Nov 8, 2008 Rating: 1
you guys anoy me so much, i surf and bodyboard. To be honest until you can do an ars or some crazy 720 air, you cant really say surfing is harder. Plus, try dropping down the inside of some 15ft wave on a bodyboard and looking up, compared to surfing its balls out.

haha souties gay and portpipe proved it. I loved the lisp written into the closing that was classic. This whole argument is a bit like politics (westmonster) there are alot of people pissing and moaning because it is cool to blindly follow the masses and not think for themselves. Criticsizing a booger for going out and charging and actually trying to argue that point when all it requires is a simple verbal slam is dumb. Each to his/her own. Boogers still sit down to pee but at least the guy in the picture has balls that touch the water when he sits to pee. Sorry about the novel but I just wanted to fit in (sarcasm).

kookenator, tow in bodyboarding has been about at least 10 yrs, to my knowledge pioneered buy the one mike stewart at jaws. he developed a longer sponge (somewhere in the region of 46"-48") and had the thing stung with stringers for rigidity. these rides weren't documented aswell back then but still happened. he's still doing it today at the same venue seen thru the eyes of youtube. for everybody else doubting the merits of this photo, i suggest you take a thought to imagine trying to hold/generate speed, dealing with chop and the fact that when you're "dick draging", a term i find terribly uncouth, a wave of this magnitude appears somewhat larger than if you're standing up. rant over thanks for reading
bazza Nov 7, 2008 Rating: -1
Papa, im not gay or anything, but sometimes when i go surf, i put one swim fin on and take all the skegs out of my board and put the leash on my arm and when im dropping in, i just like to stay laying down rather than get up...looks rediculous on a 6'3" I dont care; im frothing!! Excellent comments guys.....this is heading in a good direction now.....Glad you saw the funny side Harvey, and the 'Papas gay pink bus' was pretty good too, but Langlyn, I must apologize if my 'intelligent' comments are challenging you....I can see how sentences like "Lads, you don't have to bum other blokes....." would throw most average intellectuals into complete theoretical confusion, never mind half wits like yourself.....and Bazza's excellent get out clause "PS, I'm not a booger" sounds scarily like the curious un-penetrated gay person with his initial tentative enquiries into understanding it a bit..."I'm not gay or anything, but....."......Thou doth protest too much.....
swell_chaser Nov 7, 2008 Rating: -2
Funny thread. Surfing and bodyboarding are totally different. I mean ask a surfer what its like to be sat directly on top of the foamball for 5 seconds, it doesn't happen, surfers get in the barrel and get out ASAP, where as bodyboarder gets in the barrel and can control how long they stay in there, so what is harder there? Standing up and getting a head dip or rushing the foamy from peak to end section? This is why there will never be a consensus of opinion cos surfers haven't got a clue whats possible on a sponge. Keep the blinkers on I say, i dont care, im usually so into my own thing i hardly notice them, i mean they hardly catch any waves anyway. It looks more like an exercise in paddling about for 2 hours to catch 1 wave. Stoked!

sponge el eye Nov 7, 2008 Rating: 3
I know plenty of you, the guys who dress the part but ride shorebreak on a longboard for a year until they finally get their new 6'1 shorty. Once in the water you repeatedly fall flat on your face and return back to the lineup bashing the sponger who "dropped in on you" and telling everyone how sick you would have carved and snap turned the lip. The fact is, most of the "surfers" on msw can't surf (for those of who you can, my apologies). But its ignorant kook surfers who make comments about spongers that drives me insane. If a sponger drops in on you it's because he knows your going to fall anyway and doesn't want to miss the opportunity. And the fact of the matter is, if your out when it's really firing, its pretty much understood that you have a good interpretation of the rules in the water; so if your getting dropped in on, its an invitation to fight.
danglyn Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 0
"Papa Chambo" with that name I'm guessing you know exactly which bus you are on and its bright pink and full of men just itching to spit roast you in the same manner that they do every week when they fill your sausage hungry mouth with man shandy. Ok, thats a bit strong I know but I just wanted to give an alternative retort to your "intelligent" banter / ribbings / homophobia (note my ironic hypocracy and use of big words that I dont really understand to try and elevate myself somewhere close to your level). Sick wave, awesome shot.
westmonster Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 0
hahaha, very funny papa, and point taken. I revealed that I used to sponge to show that I'm not ignorant of that sport or the requisite skill it takes to preform. Plus, I'm pretty sure everyone sponged when they were grommets. Needless to say, I know exactly what "team" I'm on. Most of my comments are in reference to the virtue of surfing, as in, standing up.

Papa Chambo Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 1
Oh well, I tried....so fuck it, if you can't beat em, then join em...so here goes: Its interesting to see secrets coming out from some 'stand up' surfers who are no revealing they also bodyboard a bit in these recent discussions....to discretely name our fellow regulars 'Westmonster' and 'Harveywallbanger'.....well, its a bit like that sort of naive attitude to homosexuality curiosity. Lads, you don't have to bum other blokes in order to understand or be accepted by homosexuals. Not that I'm suggesting body boarders are gay (but its ok if you are), I'm just using it as an example. Any likely comparisons would be purely coincidental. I am simply suggesting that one should at least stand by ones own convictions......EG know what bus you are on, or what team you bat for.

westmonster Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 0
For all the haters, I actually said I enjoyed bodyboarding and I still do. In reference to mca_booger I said "critical moves" meaning, flips, airs bla bla bla, not "critical WAVES". No I have never sponged or surfed a wave even approaching this size or magnitude. This guy does deserve respect. But please all the people trying to say surfing and sponging are just a different set of skills and equally as difficult refer to harveywallbanger's comment. He lays out several reasons why sponging is simply not as difficult as surfing. Like I said, I love both but we can't live in an imaginary world of lollipop forests and chocolate streams now can we?
Papa Chambo Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 1
Oh right, yeah.....cheers for that Benny Boy, I see what you mean.....its always good to hear a fresh perspective to keep the discussion interesting.....

hey papa chambo we are not done with this surfing and bodyboarding coz surfing is loads better lol bodyboarding is for people who cant stand on a surf board lol !!!!

Are we not done with this f*cking body boarding/surfing argument yet? Half the photo's are full of the same shit.
tommo Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 0
i reckon tow-lidding would be harder than tow-surfing. A bit more awkward to hold on to the rope whilst lying down and then less control on the massive wave face because of a lighter finless board. But i've tried neither.
dogroberts Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 1
Heads up to mother nature for delivering that bomb and regardless of the mode of transport, well done to the 'surfer' who added perpesctive to the beast and made the picture inspiring. In the words of Ringo, "Peace and love, Peace and Love". Yeh right....

Great wave and great shot. To all those dickheads that get textually agrivated when a bodyboarder shot is posted on the forums I'd like to point one thing out. Magicseaweed is a surfing site. It's not a site dedicated to standup shortboarding. Whether the waves are ridden stand up, prone, drop knee, both knees, paddled, skimmed ... it makes no odds. Some are harder to master than others. So what. It doesn't mean it deserves no respect. It's about the style, the freedom, the rush, the fun, the private moments, the social gatherings, the travel, the environment. Most of all it's about the waves. There's enough to go around so chill out and lighten up!!!
kookenator Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 1
do you use a special board to tow on a bodyboard?
harveywallbanger Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 1
The first time I surfed I knew it was a whole new ball game. I can pushunder 2ice as deep on a boog, the flippers make life so much easier paddling, theres no takeoff syndrome, you cant fall off a bodyboard can you, you cant fall over so that whole aspect is out the window and bodyboarding just becomes easier.. sorry.. just plain fact.. charging is charging though and respect to the ones who do
The Badger Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 1

I don't normally post but in this case I feel I must. My son surfs but I neither surf or body board, although I do take photos and love every thing surfing, so as a complete layman this puts me in a unique position of being totally unbiased. I can't understand how any REAL stand up surfer could possibly critisise anyone that's prepared to take on a wave like that and in a spot like that as reinforced by archi gruntfuttock's comments. I thought all surfers were supposed to be chilled, it's sad to think I may have been wrong!

Right, I've have actually just set up an account just to reply to some of these comments. Unreal, a site that has been created to share images and a little knowledge is being polluted by you lot! Dan Skaj is a good friend, fellow proper Cornishman and an amazing waterman, I've seen this man do shit that would make most of you negative idiots dicks fall off and if it helps some of you last time I was in Ireland I met his Irish girlfriend who is probably the most amazing women I have ever met (other than mine of course). What I'm trying to say is, stop being negative be positive that people like Dan are pushing the boundary's, for a start not many people have the guts to do half the stuff these boys get up to in Ireland. If you have nothing constructive to say don't say it at all, carry on with your negative, mumbling and waste of a life in silent please.

a photo which causes tempers to flare, and sexually confused people to vent their own sexual insecurities on a SURFING website HAS to be a great shot! Lets focus on why we are on this site, to share in what other people have enjoyed and captured. All the gay comments...sheesh, Im sure Dr Phil has a site where you can discuss this....why do so many people feel the need to be macho when behind their PC screens?? So safe, so easy...grow up kids.

Just remember, at Dorkus Kookington High School boogie boarders are considered the alpha males.

any one who disses bodyboarding generaly dont know what the surfing passion is all about. Quite a few standups respect bodyboarding because they have seen it in person! any ways, that is one sick mother!!! riding lid rules!!!
kookenator Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 6
when it's big a lidders charge it's great(not quite as good as surfing but still impressive nuts) - not sure anyone can argue with that. when it's really hollow and critical and lidders charge it's great - most slabs are ridden by lidders long before surfers turn up. when it's 2-3ft and mushy and a middle aged man lying on his belly calls you off it's a bit embarassing for all involved. and what's with the angry looks - don't drop in on me then give me angry looks cos your legs nearly got cut off.....you got in the sea...
Shorey Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 2
all your comments are about gays and dicks Robro, do you by any chance surf at a spot called "the closet"? ps sick shot, that takes a lot of balls. shrivelled cold balls in this case.
La Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 0
It takes one to know one Robro, stop polluting an otherwise really cool site with your mindless bullshit.
rrobro Nov 6, 2008 Rating: -1
Sick wave. Sick photo. Queer homosexual fagget bodyboarder.
GarethB Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 4
A boogers a booger
Shorey Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 18
Amazing how when you get a picture like this of a surfer some surfers slag the guy for towing and not paddling, but the bodyboarders salute it. When its a bodyboarder, surfers slag him but the bodyboarders once again salute him. Tells you something doesnt it. Anyone who has nads big enough to take this wave on on any board gets my vote.
StormChaser Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 0
WEll said westmonster.....spongers do have to except the limitations they have with lying down....and the difference in fitness challenges.....If i had to be honest...i hate bodyboarding, but i live with it i guess....but dont drop in on me,cos i will cut you up!...thats how i see it.
BZbodyboarder73 Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 1
technically our dicks dont drag since our feet are keeping our lower body suspended above water
NZSTANDUP! Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 5
and you dont have to try and defend bodyboarding we know its here to stay, but boogers will always get crap from surfers. arrogance dont have much to do with it bodyboardings like surfings little sister thats all.
NZSTANDUP! Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 1
tow in bodysurfing would be pretty insane! and standin up on a booger would be cooler i guess but pretty hard with them flippers. sorry if weve hurt your feelings Dan ha just some constructive critisism while im bored shitless at work dreaming of square indo kegs. and i didnt mean the comment about going to indo...dont go there it sucks.
pacnwbooger Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 18
Wow, I'd be willing to say that anyone who started bodyboarding and ended up stand up just got tired of being harassed and couldn't handle NOT being in the "cool" club. Especially if they just think it's better. It doesn't require more skill, just DIFFERENT skill. Anyone who's dropped in at the Wedge, Waiamea shorey, Shark Island and numerous other slabbing ledges knows the difference. Waves are NO respecters of individuals, they brake on our heads just as hard as yours. Most stand ups even tow into Teahuppo these days because all the skill in the world can't save you from a million plus lbs of pressure on your head. My guess is if you think one way is better or harder than the other than you're also the type of person that thought you were better than the other kids in high school out of arrogance. Even if you weren't an arrogant stand up kook you'd find some other group of people to criticize because it makes you feel better about YOUR choices, so good luck with that and God bless you in your egotistical state of ignorance.
TurfbankG Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 79
That surely is one hell of a wave !! Always bigger when your out there, everyone knows that right...? Tow-in bodyboarding? HHMMmmmm.... what's next, tow-in bodysurfing? Ha As for all the comments below - What if he stood up on the bodyboard? Would a bodyboarder be cool then?
mca_booger Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 3
You could do the most critical booger moves as a mini-grom??? So you'd have happily dropped into Mitch Rawlings wave at The Right? I mean, after all, boogieboarding's easy, so if he can do it, you obviously can...
Gsurf Nov 6, 2008 Rating: 2
Sweet pic. shame about all the gay comments.
NZSTANDUP! Nov 5, 2008 Rating: -10
Dan sorry but your a blouse mate, you are NOT a surfer because you dont stand up, you drag your dick.. please dont liken the two. "Let us live in harmony"...haha what are you? GAY! pushing more boudaries...dont think so. Obviously this guy in the photo charges so thats alrite good on him, but your views on esky lid riding are a little bit distorted. I suggest you take a holiday in indonesia and see how you go, when you see the STAND ups getting all the waves while you get burned dont say i didnt tell you so... Ive got mates that lie down like you but they still get crap from us and always will because there IS a difference, sorry to burst your big gay bubble

This pic is awesome. I don't think I would ever ride a wave that big and crazy. As for all you idiots that bsut on pics get a life. Most of you comment b/c you can't do whats in the the picture and you are fantasizing right now. So change ur spunked up underwear, move out of mommy and daddys, get a job and see if you will ever ride a wave like this in your entire lifetime.
skinnycrap Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 2
thats large. wish there was a side on of this shot. that thing looks thick and hollow!
westmonster Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 4
Dan, you are not pushing any boundaries. I'm sorry but the most critical moves I've seen on a sponge I could do as a mini-grom. Spongers do score nice waves, big barrels and some are great watermen. I've surfed for years but prior to learning to stand I sponged -which I thoroughly enjoyed. The notion, however, that sponging is anywhere near as difficult as surfing is ridiculous. All the people on this forum who have done both will say the same thing unless they are kooks. There is simply no comparison as far as technical difficulty. Surfing is far more difficult. Its just the truth. I love both but theres no arguing that point.

tommo Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 1
Dan Ottley, I don't understand how surfers and bodyboarders are equal after you just told us that bodyboarders are better. And i don't think you have any right to claim anything unless we see a picture of you riding something like this

You’re just making yourselves look like idiots by spelling every other word wrong too. If you’re going to take the time to write something, at least do it right…
Dan Ottley Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 1
I agree with the last comment. All you(kooky)standups out there who think Bodyboarding's lame or rubbish can ONLY look at pictures like this and DRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAM your asses off.US BODYBOARDERS,GO HARDER,GO DEEPER,AND GET WHOLE LOT MORE TUBE RIDES ,then you'll ever even get to paddle past.We ARE SURFERS just like standups, whether you like to admit or not, anyone who rides a wave IS A SURFER. We are pushing many many more boundries and limits then standups in the oceans,so Grow up and get with the times,Let us surf in harmony as equals,we are ALL DOING ONE THING-WAVE RIDING.Bodyboarders are hear to stay.
Jamie-23 Nov 5, 2008 Rating: 1
stop f*king complaing about everything about bodyboarding, for f+*k sake, f*cking GROW UP, bodyboarding is surfings brother weather you like it or not and it will never dissappear

TOW IN BOOGIE BORDING?? that definately takes the gay ass cake award. custard filling with pink flowers. might as well put elton john (sir?) in a roxy two piece and float him out into the channel. this activity needs to be ridiculed out of camera shot. ride a moped but dont tell anyone.
