Not sure if this will still be relevant on here given that the last post was 24 days ago, but is this the photo that Surfer's April Fool's 100' wave is based on? Looks like it from the color of the boards and position of the surfers.

It's called total commitment... the only way to surf Mav's. I'm sure they were both stoked and talking about that wave at the local bar that night over a beer or maybe three considering how heavy it was ha ha. Quit trying to stir the pot. I am sure they are just as appreciative to be alive and looking at that photo, so epic...shit I would be

westmonster Dec 8, 2008 Rating: 4
Seriously what is the dude at the right thinking right now? I mean anyone who's surfed for more than a month in anything serious (definitions of that are subjective however its the same feeling ie Ken Bradshaw gets the same feeling when a 35ft peak lands on his head as I do when I get tossed on an 8 ft.)Sometimes I smile to myself as an outside set rears up in front of me. It must look like a sadistic grin of doom. But I laugh a little, usually say Oh shit a few times and then BLAAMMMOOO washingmachinewashingmachinewashingmachine.....

It's a mistake, when I uploaded this picture on this website. yes it is mavericks!
jaxson creole Dec 8, 2008 Rating: 4
thats mavericks and yes the guy in the lower right is going to get worked. there are huge outcroppings and boulders about 200 yards on the inside there. if you go to google earth you can see the radio station tower from where you paddle out to the break. or you can just paddle out from princeton harbor but that is a a long paddle! you can see the boulders using google satellite maps.

I don't know which is more frightening, the 40ft waves or the 24ft sharks, the sharks may have already eaten but that wave has a bloodthirsty look about it!
dave b Dec 8, 2008 Rating: -2
I've soiled my pants just looking at this shot.....No tows just pure hard core. Unreal & much respect, keep pushing the paddle boundries!
dsfsdgdfsg Dec 8, 2008 Rating: 1
cheers for the comments lads, paddled into that at about 6 foot it hit the reef and jacked up to that size in a few seconds. Was insane

i was training to surf there. While training at a sister spot (15ft +) totally dislocated my shoulder and had to have major surgery. Sitting in the Pillar Point channel watching a 20@20+ sec swell is another animal at that place. And yes there are large animals in the water as well. I saw a 24 ft GW at the sister spot. Anywhere in that area up to Potato Patch at Ocean Beach is a force to be reckon with in addition to the daily 51 degree water.

grat898 Dec 7, 2008 Rating: -4
this isnt cortez, its mavericks.
el chris Dec 7, 2008 Rating: 1
Right on! If you don't paddle out to Cortes you're not a proper surfer, no boats allowed.
ADD TO cART Dec 7, 2008 Rating: 3
Tow in banned at cortez ?? Has anyone not towed outhere??
dora lives Dec 7, 2008 Rating: -1
tow in's are now banned at ghost tree's ,cortez bank and paddling at mav's is the only the way it should be ,no cheating people that tow in may aswell ride the swatch wave rider that you get on cruise ships thats the whole spirit off surfing not getting assisted by a powered 250bhp ski .
ADD TO cART Dec 7, 2008 Rating: -2
This is what happens when u paddle in , you may have to share. TOW-INS RULE !

spongefreak Dec 6, 2008 Rating: -1
Awesome shot, sick wave, sooooooooo clean for such a big swell. These guys are in harmony too, matey on the left is angling onto the shoulder more and giving his mate room to turn, full respect to them both. If it was smaller there would be less room available for all that and a bit of beach bifta would be on the cards for sure, not on this muvva...HAPPY DAYS
Dropin73 Dec 6, 2008 Rating: 4
nice wave, I see shots like this (as in two people charging, in tune with the ocean) and in control on what can only be described as a monstor and for that i applaud you but if it was only 5ft they'd end up having a fight on the beach becuase the one on the inside was dropped in on. anyone know why they don't??
Francois Bouwer Dec 20, 2010 Rating: 1
My board. It was my only board too. It forced me to get a new board, so it worked out in the end...
Fray Bentos Nov 2, 2010 Rating: -1
Your nose or the nose on your board? Ouch!
Francois Bouwer Oct 22, 2010 Rating: 0
Because there is more room on a monster. On a 5ft pointbreak, if the guy who dropped in cutbacks, your screwed. I once had my entire nose ripped off because a guy dropped in on me and cutback. I didn't fight him though, but that is only because I'm not a violent person. I was hectic angry though.

It was an amazing day... You should of seen all the other breaks maxed out and just as clean it was a sight to see scary tho very uncharacteristic for the time of year thanks global warming :)

I find it kinda sad how some people on here give it all the macho "oh that wave is so small bullsh*t". There are few people out there with the skill or balls to get out there and drop into waves like this, ok it isn't the biggest, but it certainly ain't small! Great work, great shot, happy times!
USAFsurfer Nov 22, 2010 Rating: 0
Isnt the biggest?? Compared to what!?!? You had a good point until you failed to realize that this max's out paddle-in capabilities. 30ft plus is usually the standard to start towing in and stop paddling. This wave is 50-60ft on the face which makes it a 40ft+ swell. As I don't see straps on the boards and other "macho" men in the channel...i think it's safe to say they pushed the limits of traditional paddle surfing. BALLS!!!
