Longboards are OK as long as you can also ride shortboards. mix it up try different stuff. Imsouane rocks so laid back a nice place to be.

to the shortboarders that keep slating longboarding....have you ever ridden a longboard? I had shortboards and fishes for years and then tried my mates 9' on a small day when i wasn't catching anything. it was amazing, i now have my own 9'7 as well as a shortboard for whatever i feel like on the day. its amazing to watch shortboarders tearing up a wave but its equally amazing watching a longboarder glide up and down the face and hang ten, in my opinion, whatever you surf, it takes years to perfect either style and both should be admired. If you were a true surfer you would have respect for all styles no matter what your preference.

Exactly my point surfin is about having fun, catchin waves no matter what you ride but the question is:is it fun to just sit in the water and catch nothing like the (as Snadge quite rightly puts it) stickered up poser boys?

i have 1 pennith for this: From personal experience in the uk waters for many a year, i have barely ever picked up my 6'2 shortboard. (6'2 cos im a baby hefffalump muencheklerr) he is called pigdog and is black but i smashed im up surfing down caerphilly mountain last january when the snow came. in fact i surfed him mroe in that week theni have in the last 3 years in the water...you know why? cos i dont think it is ever 'too big' for my fish! I have surf my 5'8 twinnie nad my 6'0 twinnie pretty mcuh eevry session from 1 foot mush to 6+ hollow beasts (which were sketchy but makeable). I geuss it is mainly a style thing, i dont want to do airs that much, i prefer cocy-esq carves and biiiiiiig cutbacks. But you know, often i have found myself wathcing a longbaorderr wishing that was me if only i had the penniths, then again ive sen some little groms on toothpicks doing so well, and again thinking, if only id surfed from age 5, rather than being an international violinist empressario. Ho hum. So now i just surf my fishies, get great rides and look like i trying to be a retro surf monkey when i get out. but i guess that beats being a bleach blonde, stickered up psoer boy with a shitty tiny board - cos those guys NEVER look happy. Stink faces go home and learn about stoke!!! boom.

You totally Jimmed that one Snadglington. That is quite a word count. I thought I had the monopoly on long essays. Be careful Teets, you’re straying into VPs territory. Although to be fair I haven’t been marking my scent on here for a couple of weeks (been on hols). I will have to cock my leg and spray all over some more comment threads to secure my dominion, rutting season is around the corner and the young bucks are getting delusions of grandeur.

The whole point of surfing is to have fun! Surf any vehicle that makes the best of the wave on offer...stand up paddle for the dribble, log up to shoulder high, twinny for shoulder-head high, short for head-double overhead and the appropriate gun for anything over that. Bodyboard for heaving vertical drop slabby and finmunching waves and fast cliff wedgers. Ride a goatboat or a windsurfer too...just smile and be stoked...The most important thing to remember is RESPECT others..And don't forget bodysurfing is fun too. After an endless obsession with surfing I have learnt to just ignore all the people in the water and focus on getting waves rather than pandering to fools! Shout out to Sam Bleakley, James Parry, Skindog, Guts Griffiths and all others who rip more than most on long or short!!!!!

I'm not talkin about the difference between longboard and short. I'm just saying whats the point of a surfboard that cant catch waves?

Dumpy's avatar

Dumpy May 9, 2009 Rating: 1

Once again I agree with you!! If you're not catching waves you're not surfing, people should stop this whole yardstick of how good a surfer you are by how short a board you ride; let your surfing do the talking. Good man.

croney29's avatar

croney29 May 8, 2009 Rating: 1

I'm glad somebody brought up the topic of those muppets with tiny shortboards, bleached blond hair(IN IRELAND!!). They never catch a wave, just sit in the water in little packs and get in everyone's way. You dont see them in the winter or any surf over 4 foot. I ride a short enough board but not so short I cant catch a wave with it. WHATS THE POINT. I mean if there were girls on the beach I might understand just kids trying to be cool but the only girl that might be on the beach is someone's mother walkin a dog. I dont get it anyway

Chill the funk out lads. There are shite longboarders and shite shortboarders. There are people who have no etiquette. I have a 6' fish that'll catch a wave if you fart and I have 6'2 tooth pick that'll catch any steep wave.I can't surf a longboard to save my life though. Different boards suit different people and their styles. Standing on a longboard motionless while it sails down the line is not surfing though.I have so much respect for people who can rip on a long board. We all have to suck before we can surf remember.

Its a tantric sex wave.......long......slow......apealing at first because you are like, sex for 10 hours straight sure I am game.....but ultimately mind bendingly frustrating.......because the whole time you are wanting to bust it out.....but never get to!!!

sp the best bit is there is no lineup as once u get a wave its quicker to walk backk round than paddle back out through the bay, so is always pretty spread out, classic fish wave too!

i ride a long board and a shortboard, cos the swells so variable here. like goin for a laid back practice surf on my longboard, just really easy. but i like a good sesh on my shorty too, but i get fucked off when any half decent wave is bein wasted by a l/b just cruisin in middle of wave, especially when its a more sb beach. but if the waves bein riden proper, dnt matter what board. i also laugh at toothpicks at A frame breaks

Dumpy's avatar

Dumpy May 9, 2009 Rating: 3

I surf both short and long and I'm not old. Longboarding is just a completely different style which is fantastic and if you had any respect for surfings roots you'd appreciate it also. Shortboarding is good fun but its a pity it produced so many potentious wankers that have forgotten what surfing is about.

Dumpy May 8, 2009 Rating: 1

Just in the door from a 3 hour session from probably the only sheltered beach in Ireland at the moment!! Well to reply I was tortured with you speed bumps getting in the way this evening, so it goes both ways, we all follow safe and fair etiquette in the water, well we should and shortboarders are as bad in their own way pissing about catching nothing and getting in the way of people who want to ride waves and not pose like a bitch. Go be a model if thats what you want to do and get out of our way.

dirtyjerz's avatar

dirtyjerz May 8, 2009 Rating: -1

well dumpy, it is very frustrating when longboards paddle out 20 feet past the lineup of shortboards again and again because they know they can catch waves easier and just stand up on the swells 5 minutes before they break, and then we have to take the waves they don't like. Shortboarders just dislike greedy longboarders, not all of them. Personally I prefer the challenge. What's the fun when you can stand up without even moving?

Shorey's avatar

Shorey May 8, 2009 Rating: 2

yeah most of them just paddle around try to look cool in all the latest gear and then get out and tell everyone how sick it was

Dumpy's avatar

Dumpy May 8, 2009 Rating: 1

Longboards are gay!!! Thats mature! But if you're not catching waves you're not surfing; as most of you shortboarders aren't!!! Must be annoying as longboarders cruise past your frustated toothpick heads ...again and again and again!!!!!!!!!!
