Not a hump back whale, they only have a small fin which is quite close to the tail fluke.

I'm going with manta ray wing... it might look like it's too pointed but it could just be curling slightly at the end which at this angle would make it look that way. All the same I'd be praying for a set wave to come bring me to shore if I saw that, though it looks pretty flat......

There's no possibility at all that this is a white shark, and similar odds that it's a whale shark. If that is a real animal, which it very well might not be, it's most likely a basking shark, which would be harmless to surfers (I'd still have dropped a load in my wetsuit if I were one of those guys, though).

I think I have this figured out, so tell me if you agree. The water in the foreground and in the background is light in color. The water area that the shark is in is slightly darker. With the work of a master photoshopper, this could easily be altered.

that just has to do with the way the light is being reflected off the water and the chop. the air in the water due to the previous wave crashing makes the water in the foreground appear lighter as well as different depths in the water. i disagree with the "master photoshopper."

well first, its no whale! second, a manta wing would be hell of a lot pointier than that. most likely a really big ass shark. there are sharks that will grow that big so the dorsal could potentially stick outta the water with the tail still in the water. it could have also just broke the water in which case the tail would not yet have broken the water! just a thought!

Baskers tend to be more triangular and not hooked over, and you'd see the trail of the tail fin. No Whales have dorsal fins that shape, but could be the side profile of a tale fluke. But I'm still betting on Manta wing.

Manta Wing? Possible I guess, aren't they a bit pointier? Looks like it could be a Basking Shark dorsal fin. It's big enough, but usually you see the tip of their tail also. Are there Basking Sharks in Oz??

i thought manta ray when i first checked the pic out as i also had the shit scared out of me by one in indo surfing of nusa lembonga...but its a tough call..would be cool to now for sure.
