That wave is massive like outer reefs Hawaii massive, I bet He uses magic seaweed before he go's. I live in Ecuador and wales u.k and the forcast is so acurate sometimes to the minute, I can go out my house both places and see the swell change direction just like the forcast said it would a week before, to the minute. So what if the wave size is a little off sometimes, if it says theres waves theres always waves.

MSW puts up(and takes down!)certain spots at the bidding of devious, influential locals...to throw off and confuse the invading hordes into going to the 'wrong' places! =0 It's TRUE! It's happened here! I have to be cryptic and can say no more...for fear of ending up 'sleeping with the fishes'! Does that sound paranoid?...Say...what would the names of those new spots you're talkin' about be then, me boyo? =)...It's not for me I'm askin'...tjo said he wants to know, hehehe.

Coelacanth Aug 24, 2010 Rating: 0

You just don't get it do you Porty? Why do you think they call it 'Magic' Sea-whatever?...Poof! It's not there anymore. There is a break here that appeared briefly on MSW...until the very 'protective' locals of that break had it 'disappeared'by MSW...to confound the unwelcomed 'others'. I don't blame them one bit. It's a very good,'rocky'bottom break with very limited parking. That same information is now identified by a different break name, which happens to be MY local break.

true 'dat, dont believe anyone and never follow the crowd, theres more people surfing these days that dont know whats what, they see cars in a parking lot and stop, see 20 people in the water and assume it's good. i dont believe theres waves til i see one peel in with my own 2 eyes!

http://magicseaweed.com/photoLab/viewPhoto.php?photoId=86616 I remember this day well . . . I would like to be able to say that I had one of the best sessions ever, catching wave after wave, having a snooze in the car and going out again untill my limbs refused to work . . . MSW predicted it to be good. Not quite as goos as this, but good, none the less. I was all set to go with a mate. It was a 2 hour drive from home and sharing a lift would have saved some pennies . . . I phoned my mate, he told me he had checked the reports and cams and that it was shit (I had no internet at home so could not validate this claim) and that we should go on Sunday. So... I stayed home and did a bit of gardening, chilled and listened to music. Sunday comes and I'm sat in the carpark looking at a bleak, blown out 1ft shit heap. I swim with my board for a couple of hours, trying to make the most of it, dry off, warm up, head home, sleep and go to work the next day. Log onto to MSW and see this pic. I have never relied on a mate to tell me the surf conditions since and neither have I ever forgiven him. MSW has it's faults but I can live with them. Mates who tell you that the surf is shit, shack up with a girl for the day and then drive you to a beach to look at piss poor conditions... Well... that is something else. Twat!

tjo's avatar

tjo Aug 23, 2010 Rating: 0

i remember when all we had was the 6 oclock news weather map, jet stream positioning, blue H's and red L's, and isobars, but when you called it right back then you felt like a genius. now believe the wrong site and round up the crew for a sunrise glimpse at lake atlantic, all you can say is "breakfast on me?"

Coelacanth's avatar

Coelacanth Aug 23, 2010 Rating: 0

Probably the only thing worse than getting yourself all hopeful and excited about MSW(or any other)swell models/forecasts beyond 48 or 72 hours away...is trying to spread that exciting 'news' to a 'select few' of your favorite surfing buds! A hard lesson learned after at least 2 years of mesmerized MSW gazing in wonder(at the swell charts...NOT the chick pics!)...with the occasional positive reinforcement of actual waves...to keep me believing in 'Magic'! I now consider myself lucky to have survived all those early morning gatherings of usually very disappointed 'bands of brohs' with only some psychic pain and the enduring nickname 'Nostradumbass'. I was afraid I would have to start wearing a Chastity belt there just before I broke myself away from that self-destructive habit!

tjo's avatar

tjo Aug 23, 2010 Rating: 0

the funny thing about forecasting of this site is that the 5 day forecast is always good, then as it gets closer the truth starts to show. but i guess if it told us all that it would be flat for a week, we wouldnt check the site daily which means less hits, less advertisement $$. cant blame them, they needs to get paid. sometimes its nice to hear a fairytale instead of the depressing news, just check a few other resources before setting the alarm clock for 4 am

I can remember the Big G's 4 day forecasts - £1 a second random premium forecasts from a random punter somewhere near Manchester - started in Cornwall then Wales then Channel Islands then Craggy island then the Falklands...... Isle of man....London.......................Ireland( yes all of it in one go)...... Scotland west coast....Scotla.... beep beep beep beep

There's waaaaay more to consider than just "uhhh... is there swell". You have to know the spot, what makes it work and what doesn't. MSW just gives you data, you have to know how to use it. My local KZN coastline has a lot of different types of breaks and each spot only fires up depending on what conditions come through. For example most of our North coast reef breaks get a SE swell direction 90 degrees to them, which means that even a decent 4ft 8 second becomes a blanket close-out that is a bugger to drop into. But just down the road in town, there'll be long gurgling sandy walls that'll take you all the way from backline to the beach. Conversely, when there's too much south in the swell, it'll miss sheltered breaks like town completely but the North and South Coasts will go ABO, a lesson learned in the Mr Price Pro Ballito 2009. If you're working with a beachbreak you have to take a look at the conditions throughout the week to see if the banks have been punished. If you're working with a reef, point break or a shelf, the tidal pattern becomes all important. What I've also used on MSW is the animated swell height and period. That gives you a very good overall picture of whether oceanic swells are actually hitting a sheltered bay or coastline, or missing it completely. The only time I get disappointed with this forecast is when I don't do my homework right, like getting all excited about a 6ft 10 second and then going to Umhlanga at high tide. Or the time I drove to JBay at 4am from P.E. for 5 footers only to discover a lake as the swell had too much west in it.

Although we're talking same lattitudes, here the winter big ground swells are NW / WNW. The storms that make Aileens fire send us 14 to 16s lines that travel the N.Atl, then wrap around the southern righthand points

tjo's avatar

tjo Aug 21, 2010 Rating: 4

hey ratty, like mel said blaant it up. the only thing i truly trust anymore is my own deduction. i start by checking the local weather maps, then buoys, the fnmoc site, then i leave some shitty smartass comments here, and finally i check the beach. should probably reverse the order but waiting for the coffee to brew gives me enough time knock the first 4 off the list

Coelacanth's avatar

Coelacanth Aug 21, 2010 Rating: 0

The Bahamas blockage make it a tricky forecast down your way Mel. Not much better up my way either. It takes a decent size swell with some north angle to reach us AND be worth bothering with. Sometimes due east works here. Only big SE stuff refracts in enough here with any size. But you have to head towards Ft. Pierce & further north for most SE and even ESE angled swells.

Stop bagging the reports. 20 years ago you had to make your own forecasts from those dicks on the tele. There are many web forecasts available, some more accurate than others. Have a look at a few reports and make the call. Stop being so lazy.

tjo's avatar

you all need to know the system of understanding msw surf reports, you take the swell height and period, cut the period in half, and subtract the swell by itself.... but leaving comments on these pix is fun

more and more guys like you and me are surfing these size waves every day, look at other big wave spots like dungeons, cape town, freezing conditions, biggest population of white sharks in the world and the line up is crowded at 30ft swells. This guy is probably over the moon (or a bit mad) if he really is the only one out! things like comunication, knowledge of CPR and where the nearest hospitals are is just common sense - it's not like you roll out of bed, see that there's a mahoooosive swell and start paddling out by yourself....5-10 years times we're gonna see gromms being towed into these bad boys! I for one will prob never ride anything this big! mucho respecto!!!!

groundsweller is right on. Holy !@#$%^! 30 feet of face, and 50 feet of spray. All I could think was how unbelievably suicidal it would be to paddle out to this remote cold monster on your own. It really looks like that guy has done just that, a la Jeff Clark. Regarding the effect this has had on my "mental focus", it reminds me of a joke. Question: How many kids with ADD does it take to screw in a light bulb? Answer: Ooh, that's a pretty bird.

7's avatar

7 Aug 21, 2010 Rating: 0

Chill (and avoid msg). I'm frequently accused of the same thing. And like you, I believe it can be a gift. I still think the joke is hilarious, even if friends might say it's about me. http://magicseaweed.com/photoLab/viewPhoto.php?photoId=149993

Francois Bouwer's avatar

Francois Bouwer Aug 21, 2010 Rating: -1

Fuck you. And pretty birds are more important than electricity gobbling, environmentally unfriendly light bulbs anyway. Us guys with ADHD and ADD don't have a deficit in attention, it is just we have a hard time focusing on things we deem unimportant. Give us a task that we deem either important of fun, (or better still, both.) and we will blow your minds away. Just to clarify, Albert Einstein, and probably 95% of all philosophers, have/had ADHD. We tend to get bored with stupid stuff really quickly.

groundsweller's avatar

groundsweller Aug 20, 2010 Rating: -1

Very serious big cold-water surf. Best attempted by experienced surfers in very good physical condition with good mental focus who are ready, willing, and able to receive a major thrashing(and perhaps injury) as well as a major thrill. The buddy system, land-based communication links with the nearest medical facility, and first aid/CPR skills should always be part of this experience. A jet ski would be nice to have out there. This surf is not to be taken lightly/casually. Good luck and enjoy!
