There's a wall in front of this break that says "locals only." I paddled out when there was one other guy out there. He told me to, "take it easy mang, I don't want to see you get hurt." It's definitely safe in El Tunco, but don't expect hugs from the locals.

Have to agree with this bloke , people out this side of the world can get pretty nasty , I have had death threats from a surfer who was part of a coke gang and even been wrestled off my board at one time by a drop in local longboarder , nice......

On a whole, central america is a safe place for travelling surfers. I was there first 8yrs ago and again last year. It was safe then and is safe now. Just dont be stupid and go wandering around la libertad at midnight on your own half cut.

El Salvador is really safe now, and if you are friendly and respectful with the locals you will have a great time

This spot is awesome, I was there for 2 weeks back in october, we had the same quality waves for 2 weeks solid. I surfed la bocana for 2 weeks and yeah, the locals are cool, if you let them have there space and show respect they return the compliment, I had no worries, but if your a 'gimp', for sure your gonna get shot...!
