Alise's photo of Porthcawl - Coney Beach

This photo was taken during a five star Severn Bore on the 2nd of March 2010 at 7ish in the morning. There was some frost on the ground, beautiful sunrise and some keen and psyched surfers ready for the cold five star river treatment. (Of course this is not Porthcawl, but there is no choice for this location and it is my local)

Another good shot of the Severn Bore , different spot a little further upstream. Tide was a fraction smaller on the day this was taken, but conditions were better. Not too shabby for an inland river! http://magicseaweed.com/photoLab/viewPhoto.php?photoId=47399&browseSession=dbce9d9f6660abfd2a69b4a637ea2cdf

7.6 miles! that sounds fucking awesome. Probably would get pretty thirsty though, better pack some road sodas on those SUP's.

Steve often has a support boat/river taxi with him...don't bring one with you though. His pilot is a qualified Master Mariner who knows the river like the back of his hand. Boats pilotted by people who don't have the same knowledge are a danger to everyone else and very likely to come to grief. I think this was taken on his record-breaking ride. http://andrewcareyphotography.co.uk/pictures-1/bore/bore-01.jpg

You wait all year for that freak tidal condition. You wake up at 3am, paddle out in the bitter cold, wait for hours and finally you see the wave forming. You paddle hard, the sweep is strong and you almost slip off the back but you catch it, stand up, look down the line... AND YOU'RE BLOCKED BY 10 DROP-IN SUPs!

Hey Sorry what I meant in the comment is that Porthcawl is my local, so for the lack of the Bore tag, I picked that. Although we will be there on the 22nd.

kidderlidder Mar 10, 2011 Rating: 1

This is your local wave? I don't recognise you... Do you ride many tides, or are you just saying you live in the area?

kidderlidder's avatar

kidderlidder Mar 10, 2011 Rating: 0

Luke is right. "5 star" refers to the net rise from low to hgh tide measured at Sharpness. This tide was 10.3 metres, which is the lowest end of 5 star. The wave runs for over 20 miles. The big tides are always crowded, but 20 miles...2 banks.. go figure. There are secret spots. Biggest recorded sustained wave in recent years was 2.8 metres for around 1 mile, although it will often reform and peak before breaking at around that size for the odd moment here and there. Nice shot Alise. Luke... you got any on MSW from the last tides? The ones on your blog are good.

Thanks man, I don't im afraid as I only shot a couple of stills on the Monday at Epney, and the rest of the time I was filming, as I'm currently making a film about the Bore. Down again for the ones next weekend though so will try shoot some more stills then.

Nice pic, but its rammed, so is hardly going to be a pristine surf experience. Given the nature of the bore i.e you fall off you get left behind, it could be good fun sabotaging other peoples efforts so you end up surfing on your own, some sort of royal rumble/last man standing wins? I don't like to share.

Luke Gartside's avatar

Luke Gartside Mar 9, 2011 Rating: 1

everything that spongdudette said is correct, five star bores only come on really big high tides (around the 10.3m mark) with the biggest wave recorded being around 7 foot. And its just a different kind of surfing to that done in the sea, and fun for totally different reasons as you can literally surf alongside all your mates on the same wave for miles and miles (7.6 miles being the record on the severn, recorded by steve king) through the countryside and thats why people love it.

Spongerdudette's avatar

Spongerdudette Mar 9, 2011 Rating: 2

Wise! I don't know about that Chalkie.....or were you being sarcastic?!? I'm probably not 100% right and I'm sure that someone will correct me if I'm not. But the 5 star bores are generally around the Spring (and Autumn) equinoxe and caused by a combination of high spring tides, low pressure and wind from the south-west. And taking all that into consideration this is the difference. I'm under the impression that the best wave/bore height during a 5 star bore was just under the 7 foot mark. Not a big wave you might say, but just consider the power it has in a silt filled fast tidal river. I heard but unsure how true this is, that some surfers have even ridden a nightime bore with only some floodlighting!!!! But safety has to be a major factor and riding the bore is only for the experience surfer.

Great shot. If you don't read the caption first it's a strange photo to make sense of. It looks like SUP might be the way to tackle it.

kidderlidder's avatar

kidderlidder Mar 10, 2011 Rating: 1

SUPs are one of many good ways to surf it, but leave the paddle at home. You don't need it, you just need the extra bouyancy, because the water is less saline. NOT a beginners wave, no matter the size. The surge that follows the bore is a proper saltwater enema, and makes for very difficult exits at times, as well as the occasional whirlpool. You can easily lose a half mile or more trying to paddle to the banks after you come off the wave.
