Because Bay is a right. When its good like this it drains off a super shallow sandbar in front of the pier. If you sit off to one side of the main peak and go left on a wave that has come in wide: Nice steep takeoff, tuck into the pit, wave heaves onto the bank directly in front of the pier and shuts down, gargle the mudbox for a minute, surface with pier's barnacles one foot behind you and an ocean of sets in front of you (on the other side of the shallow sandbank which you now have to paddle through). You asked.

Durban baby! This 6ft break at North/Bay, then 1-2ft breaks 300m further south. Something for everyone!

That was my home break and is still top spot for me too

Thats North, the odd left into Dairy... Still as good as ever, but gets crowded as ever... Durban has way too many good surf spots... And being winter, gets good almost everyday...

Bay.., as a kid we hitched to Durban for the Gunston 500 from Zinks when that pier was just a pile of rocks, sleep overnight on the roof of a building near Wedge pier, watch the sun rise and the finals and head home booped up and exhausted. Memories....

I'd be hopping off that pier, couldn't watch more than 1 of those go by.

Ahh my beloved beach, how I miss thee! (and the tripple chip and cheese roti's with mutton gravy from Johnny's)
FlyingFish Jun 2, 2011 Rating: -1
Johnny's is still definitely open - ooooooooh 5x chip & cheese? That sounds like a marathon, not a meal, but I'm up for the challenge. Yup, beach front has cleaned up nicely. As for the vibe - what you give is what you get .... Come home people ... oh wait, no don't!
Grommm Jun 2, 2011 Rating: 0
O's you can get a 5x cheese and chip! This is durban, you ask and o's will make plans..no connections needed!epic
Freestyling Jun 1, 2011 Rating: 1
No its still open I'm sure, but ya its a good place to be now. Beaches much cleaner and a lot more going on down there these days. It takes going away for a few years before you appreciate what was here all along. So stoked to be back.
Baboon Barrels Jun 1, 2011 Rating: 0
I hear you bro, would come back any day if it weren't for the missus! Johnny's is closed now isn't it? I went to house of curries last time I was back, a six pack of assorted bunnies! frikken awesome!I was really impressed with the place since the world cup. beaches are clean and smart and people seemed to be happier?

I've managed to force down a triple or two in my time. ahhh, maybe another this Friday night. I did my time over in the UK but the call of that pier and 23 degree winter days was too strong
FlyingFish May 31, 2011 Rating: 3
Triple chip and cheese? You must have connections there - the best I've been able to do is double. But yes, Johnny's ... cry the beloved country

If that's North, that bowl next to the pier used to be outstanding, but that looks like the BIG swell has messed the inside up a bit...but lovely left breaking into Dairy...seems the banks have shifted a bit over the years..I remember class rights peeling from that pier, very similar to the Bay..missing it heaps..need to win the lottery so I can go back and just live the life and not worry about the politics and economy :(
Grommm Jun 2, 2011 Rating: -1
Nought, Pretty sure it's Bay..to the left of North. As it says in the caption. Sic Shot LIZ!!!
