It is heptagonal because the 6 aperture blades within the lens make a heptagonal shape as it allows light into the camera. Different lens makers have different numbers of blades for their apertures thus creating different flare shapes. Joggly, you really should know more about flares, what with being a hippy an’ all…… P.S. It is a little known fact that subversive English lens makers of the 19th century made their apertures to resemble the shape of a wang as an engineers in-joke, safe in the knowledge they would never be found out because we don’t actually get any decent sunshine.
