thanks to Wade for this shot of me on this wave the real story is there were two dolphins surfing this wave with me - look closly you can see a second splash in the photo. these dolphins must have jumped 6 or 8 times in front of me as the wave as it went on and on down the line.Cant wait for the next storm always a good time down there.

Hi Dunkin, I recently saw you had added a comment about your photo here. I hope you didn't mind getting the publicity from my placing this awesome photo you took on the MS website? Your website wwdphotography.com is great with so many excellent photos of surfing at South Padre Island. I urge all surfers, especially Texas and the Gulf Coast, to view your collection and make a few purchases. This will insure your presence at the next big swell for you to again capture some magic moments of man enjoying a visit with mother ocean.

haha dolphin is pissed because the guy snaked him. Just kidding. Real nice timing. The position the surfer is in and the dolphin in the air seems to say, "Wait! where did you come from? Sorry! Didn't mean to get tin your way!" And the dolphin is like, "It's o.k. dude, there will be more waves"
Dunkin Oct 30, 2008 Rating: 3
This is the real deal, I took it. Prints of this photo are available at wwdphotography.com. I print them with pigmented inks on an Epson R2400 and they are fine art quality. View the rest of the Gustav gallery for more surfing with dolphins photos.

let us hope for the sake of living existence that this dolphin had a most painful death by a motorboat shortly after this photo was shot
k7buoy Oct 15, 2008 Rating: 1
I must have missed something here. That looks pretty genuine as pictures go, dolphins, especially bottlenose can be pretty big. The boat must have been cuting in fine though, right on the shoulder of the break! That would have worried me more!
kram ssentron Jul 6, 2010 Rating: 2
taken from the jetty some swells push into the corner and you are given the oppertunity for a great shot
Scott Bishop Oct 15, 2008 Rating: 3
Dolphins do get big. They're all over the breaks through out San Diego and they much bigger than that one. Check out this dolphin photo: http://magicseaweed.com/photoLab/viewPhoto.php?photoId=23116

I was out that afternoon. Awesome rights but hard to get into, some would close out. There were dolphins riding with the surfers for quite a while. I saw one riding a wave with a surfer and dolphin jumped out of the water 4 times. (Just like the picture)

Has a dolphin ever killed a surfer here?
Praise be the Church Of Surf and looking at gurls bo... Sep 20, 2008 Rating: 2

Paul_n_Texas Sep 16, 2008 Rating: 1
I finally looked specific info on Bottlenose Dolphins and the average size is near 10 feet (3 meters) long. The males are generally a bit bigger than the females, much like us board surfers. I hope that settles the "size" debate. And yes they are quite frisky here, I think they enjoy the warm water temperatures we have in the summer. Go to this website for more facts: http://www.kidsplanet.org/factsheets/dolphin.html

For Hurricane Ike Photos (just out) go to www.wwdphotography.com; Click on "Photo Galleries", then select "IKE". Offshores were a wailing and the waves were a Tubing. I particularly like photos #1, 3, 36 & 42 the best. How about you guys/gals? Let's say a prayer for our surf brothers in Galveston,Texas areas. As the locals took a huge hit on the island and surrounding beach areas from Ike. I know they are a tough group and will be back for more surf soon.

NZed surfer, it swam all the way as it had dreams of becoming a rodeo dolphin, here you see one of the cowboys getting launched from his fresh bucking saddle, flipper has nothing on bucking bill here..

Are dolphins dangerous?
westmonster Sep 12, 2008 Rating: 0
I just went to the site named in the bottom right corner of the pic. I suggest everyone who is interested in Texas surf do the same. I was surprised to find a bunch of waves a bit bigger than this one, must have been quite an epic day for the lone star state surfers.

I remember Luke Egan getting skunked during a heat at J-Bay a couple years ago during the Bong' Pro. A whole pod of dolphins dropped in on him while he surfed a crucial wave in the dying seconds to progress to the next heat. Needless to say, he SHAT himself, and then moaned for two days about not making it through to the next round. Supposedly it had something to do with an interference call against the dolphins. Judges wanted none of it though...
Reef Empire Sep 12, 2008 Rating: 37
i love this photo! gustav had sum sick swell, and with ike there were epic waves today i actaully cant wait to hit up the surf tomarrow!

Yes sir Hope all you in texas are ready for ike. Looks like its gonna be far enough north for us to get some epic surf yet again. To all fellow texas surfers we are having a great summer for surf for once!!!
capt.jamiej Sep 11, 2008 Rating: 2
It'll be bigger than that real soon. Wish I was back in Texas.
charly70 Sep 11, 2008 Rating: 1

harveywallbanger Sep 11, 2008 Rating: 3
thats actually an inflateable dolphin skimming down the face, and the splash ahead of it is the rider falling off
spadresurfer Sep 10, 2008 Rating: 1

Yes, do as that guy says: go to the web-site (see lower left-hand corner). Check out picture 30 of 48. Talk about back-side air!!!
xaft69 Sep 10, 2008 Rating: 17
Thanks, now are you getting ready for Hurricane Ike? or already surfing it? Its going straigt to texas, good luck over there, i hope nobody dies
Paul_n_Texas Sep 10, 2008 Rating: 1
It's a real dolphing, they do get big, that one is probably around 8ft+. Remember the surfer is leaning over so his reference height is around 5ft. With the use of a large telephoto lens from a long way away there is no size increase in the closer surfer versus the slightly farther away dolphin. Go to the website shown in the bottom right corner and go to the gallery. Click on the Gustav photos from day 1. You'll see more big waves and more dolphins too.
LDS Sep 10, 2008 Rating: 0
The guys leaning away so appears smaller and dolphins do get that big. Great shot!!!!!
dblock3 Sep 10, 2008 Rating: 17
r u for real they do get that big have u ever been to sea world and infact they do even come in the bay i have seen them many times while fishing in 4 foot water so i think it is real
harveywallbanger Sep 10, 2008 Rating: 0
I agree, not because you dont get dolphins that big, Ive watched a few nature shows in my time, but because of where its coming out of the wave, spray looks wrong too,..
yamaslut Sep 10, 2008 Rating: 0
can you say photoshop??? Dolphins are not that big, even in Texas...
thewaveJunkie Feb 1, 2010 Rating: 3
check the website on the bottom of the pic. or go to seagypsy.com and you can see all the so called "photoshoped" waves in texas...its to bad that I have imagined all those times i've surfed great waves here, and with dolphins too. man, my imagination must be really good.
thewaveJunkie Feb 1, 2010 Rating: -2
Have you ever been to texas??... Then you dont know. My buds and I have all gotten several chances to experience this. But i guess you'll never know.

Binger Photo Sep 10, 2008 Rating: 1
xaft69 - It all depends on the storm's track. Waves are formed when winds blow over a portion of the ocean. The larger the area, and stronger the winds, the larger the swell will be. With the right swell direction, it depends on the direction your beach faces. Different beaches hold different swell directions better. On the east coast, the storm will be moving north so most of the good times will be before the storm hits, if it were to move over land. If the storm pulls out and stays over the ocean towards Europe, there will be good surf for a good time length because the wind fetch remained over water rather than land.

Localism sucks ...normally!
xaft69 Sep 9, 2008 Rating: 1
Congratulations great wave, great foto. One question, when the hurricane finaly arrives, the waves are choppy and there´s no surf rigth? the good day is the day before touching coast? Here in venezuela we surfed 2-3 ft from Gustav when it was only a warning but here they go from east to west so the better day is when its in front of you, but how is it over texas where Gustav was comming straigt for you? Good bye
Kaptain Kook Sep 9, 2008 Rating: 1
Hang on, a dolphin who thinks its a snake, a bloke on a fish and both riding a storm named after a gust of wind.............!
pops-uk Sep 9, 2008 Rating: 1
Dont you just hate being dropped in on??? Awesome shot.
westmonster Sep 9, 2008 Rating: 2
The REAL locals can snake anyone they want without repercussions.

SWEET shot! There's one of our brothers out there lining it up! The surf in Nicaragua finally picked up: here's a link for yesterday's waves: http://nicaraguasurfreport.com/reportlist.php?id_secc=25&x_date=2008-09-08&z_date=%3D%2C%27%2C%27 Hopefully this will work for you: it's worth a peak. "aaaaggggghh holy shit"!
westmonster Sep 9, 2008 Rating: 17
"Not too bad?" the description asks? No my friend, not too bad at all, this wave is truly massive for Texas and would be considered at least 'large' on most other beaches.
Papa Chambo Sep 9, 2008 Rating: 19
So thats a rare wave to see in Texas then? Imagine the scenario: wait patiently all year for a wave......then your moment comes....there are few other surfers cos waves are rare so the lineup is empty.....paddle in, on your feet and a big easy wall of water opens up ahead of you.....poised and ready to charge......and a f*cking massive black dolphin launches itself out of the wave, scaring you half to death causing you to fall and get nailed......
knightc87 Sep 9, 2008 Rating: 1
Im from texas and the dolphins love to surf with us or should I say we love to surf with them. And yes they are pretty big here. This was a great hurricane swell we dont see this size often.
