Ha, you don't know what cold water is till you've surfed an arctic swell in Portrush, or Thurso, or somewhere cold. But hey what would I know, I regularly go out and have these great breaks with no one on them, Ireland's great

dude why are you guys arguing over whats really cold or no. The reason people where wetsuits is because it keeps you warm and comfortable, and so what if us northern cali guys like to where wetsuits we never said anything about how cold your water is, and its called the cold water classic because this is whats cold to us.

Speaking of cold water has anyone bought or taken out a loan to buy the new ripcurl heated suit. £750! I think its cheaper to fly somewhere hot!

These comments remind me of the one Monty Python skit, its a real classic which starts off with: "when I was young..."

You don't get polar bears in the Antarctic

Squirl, thanks for bringing some humor to the pointless and boring "is it cold or not debate". I called it the Cold Water Classic cos thats the name of the comp, not to try and prove how hardcore Santa Cruz is. GWshots, I admire your commitment and would love to surf the north east coast some day but for now i think i prefer my waves without chunks of ice, the kelp is bad enough. Cheers Ryan

come surf england in the middle of january, when you can't tell the difference between the sea and the sky coz its so freakin grey and you have to physically check your balls are still attached once you get out coz since the first minute you were in the water the only part of your body you know is workin are your eyes and thats only when it aint a 50 mph onshore wind!

You guys dont know cold. Cold is surfing in the antactric in the dead of winter with howling 100mph off shores no sunlight and polar bears cutting you off. You have to wear a 25 mil dry suit and your nuts are still the size of sweet peas. I would surf all the spots you have mentioned with nothing more than speedos and some band aids to cover my nipples. My nips are a little sensitive.

Cold??? I surfed out there a bunch of times and it is like bath water. Come surf in New England. 100 degree summer days and the water isn't any warmer than 59 degrees F. You want to have a cold water classic, come surf New Hampshire in a February Nor'Easter. 20 degree air temps, 35 degree water temps, 6-8ft swell with 15mph offshores, screaming point breaks and the only crowd factor is giant ice chunks in the line up.

I agree. santa cruz is cold water. I wasn't comfortable surfing a rare south swell in LA in August 07 without a wetty. And anyway he wrote 'Cold Water Classic' because that is the name of the event. The West Coast of America from Baja Cali north is much colder than it should be.

I once naively trotted into the surf in the south west coast of Portugal in August in boardies expecting the water to be warmer than France and UK purely on the assumption of it being further south......very surprised I was too that the water is in fact colder than the UK.

I took this shot and Im sorry to say Joskin Redneck, that I grew up in North Devon, went to Uni in Swansea for 5 years before moving to Norcal and I know what cold is and isn't. Santa Cruz is actually colder than the much of the west coast of the UK for several months of the year, the water in Wales is colder in the winter months (nov-april) but some times you still need a 4/3 in SC in the middle of summer which I never did in Wales. But yes its also a lot colder elsewhere (Alaska, Canada...etc) which I hope to experience some day. Cheers to everyone for the comments.
