Spectral NWW3 Forecast

As we mention elsewhere on the site our charts and local forecasts (like others on the web) show dominant swells - the biggest in range of the forecast. This sometimes obscures the real magic long period stuff coming in from other systems...

Detailed instructions on the right and below.

About this Location

Local View Wide View
+  +

These Spectral Bulletin forecast locations are some distance offshore. This forecast is 29 miles from the beach. Swell from this location will take a further 1 to 2 hours to reach the beach depending on swell period (higher period waves travelling faster) and direction:

10 second period = 17mph
14 second period = 25mph
20 second period = 35mph

As with all our tools use this information in conjunction with your own on the beach observations to best develop an ability to forecast accurately for your local break. As always send us any feedback or suggestions.

What is This?

The NWW3 forecast model we use for our charts and for our local spot forecasts normally shows the dominant swell only. On occasion it's not this swell making the surf. The Spectral Bulletin takes the full range of data for specific offshore spots and shows every relevant swell approaching our shores. It's this information that allows the experienced forecaster the full picture over the next fews days. SwellTrack information is also broken down hour by hour giving a better idea of the exact arrival of a new swell (see note below about time taken to travel to coast).

Using The Bulletin

Each column in the forecast should be read like the swell section of the local spot forecasts. Giving you offshore height in feet, period and swell direction. The colours are ONLY based on the swell period - the single most important factor for judging the quality of a swell but check the heights carefully. Also check swell direction. These are offshore forecasts and any or all of the component swells could be travelling away from your local break.

All times are GMT.

Swell forecasts are for a point someway offshore and swells will take some time to travel to local beaches. Check specific information for this location below.
