I love the fact I have never mentioned the name of the beach in Mex and mentalist Murfy tells the entire world the name of the beach. Repeatedly... Why so angry fella? No one cares about that shorey, not when Puerto is round the corner. It's been in the bodyboard mags for 10-years. Hardly a secret.
With lunatics like him around comments will be off until further notice.
I don't need the abuse.
Oh and my first published photo was taken on a £35 Zenit 12XP. An all manual bit of recycled Russian battleship.
And I thought you where just a robot shutter speed on wheels. Your human after all ! Sorry for any abuse. You and many other dedicated photogs contributions are the reasons I subscribe , religiously read and collect many surf publications that fuel and keep me so stoked to be A SURFER ! YEW
I never set out to be a pro. It's all a happy accident.
This explains briefly where I came from...
http://www.slidemag.co.uk/2009/08/surf-photography-first-steps.html
you suck up jug's :) but yes i agree, ALL for one and one for ALL....hurrah! Yeah what was murfs deal, i got to glance at the photo before the comments disappeared and he and a buddy/2nd profile had plastered it with about 10 comments of similar nature, don't blame you for turning the comments off sharpy...shame though!
Sorry to see you have gone the ‘disable comments’ route on your photos, I seem to recall a while back you said that wasn’t your style. I may well have missed some of the debate (and apologies if I have) but I don’t think anyone was having a go at you, just expressing their preference on what they like to see on a surf community website. I have to agree that I like the mix of pro/am uploads being displayed together, that’s what a community is all about. But if the home page gallery does turn into a pros only print sale I do feel it will be to the MSW’s detriment, however I don’t see the harm in trying to sell prints online with this new system as long as it isn’t in your face, no one is forcing anyone to buy them and I’m not much of a sucker for marketing anyway (I stopped paying attention to advertising when I found out that Redbull doesn’t actually give you wings…. my Raleigh Boxer was totalled trying to recreate the E.T. bmx scene when I was a yoof!). If that is the reason you disabled the comments then that is fair enough, I respect that, obviously the page looks a bit more professional without the forum rants below a shot. Can’t say I’m convinced there is vote rigging going on other then the usual tits who habitually vote 1 for shits’n’giggles but it would be a real shame if some amateur shots that deserve a bit of home page glory were shunned because this system gives right of way to pros, all images should get equal opportunity to shine via fair voting. I do agree with you about the viewing experience of poor photography though, there are some snappers who upload about 50 bland boring unedited shots per session and still have links to their website where they display and sell the same shots anyway, I personally don’t want to trawl through a pile of pish to get to a juicy image, people should be more selective in what they upload, make it their best work, then there is more incentive to go to their website/profile page to view more. If all people upload is tat why would anyone bother clicking on their personal website. But if you upload just one absolute gem, then yes, curiosity is rightly aroused. Less is more. And if I want to treat myself and reward the image maker by buying a print where is the harm in that? I fully appreciate pro camera gear aint cheap, I just upgraded my kit recently and I quite fancy justifying the cost by earning some money out of it before it is not a state of the art camera anymore (sometime next week probably!). Regardless of whether I can make some wedge from it I would still upgrade, shoot photos and share them anyway as I love taking surf shots, I imagine there are a great many people who would echo the same sentiment on here too. Hope you haven’t lost faith in the MSW forumites, you have a lot of fans on here and I include myself among them.
P.S. stop ya whining about loss of earnings, we are all in a recession mate! I have endured a year of freezing cold showers and limited heating just so I could save money for a quicker upgrade, I haven’t seen my wang since Christmas!……my girlfriend says it hasn’t been missed :-(
Hat off to you Sir, a rather impressive rant and some good points put forward (i still like looking at the REALLY crap pics though, even if there's the tiniest hint of what the spot/day maybe like). I just want more more MORE!!!
Now there is a challenge Sharpy. Create a body of work with a disposable point and shoot. I bet it would get a "feature" in the most prestigious surf press. The simple things in life are certainly the flavour lately. Call it " Tired of perfection ". On that same theme how about posting some of your early experimental pieces. Back in the day when you first "borrowed" dads Lomo. I think you would be pleasantly surprised how they will be accepted and appreciated. The feedback a lot more warming than a cheque in the mail ! Thanks mate.
This new print ordering thingymagig looks interesting, is it just prints or are they gonna do photo-gifts as well? Hope they have an option to print to mini white t-shirts worn by teddy bears….its not for me you understand, just checking…what, stop looking at me weird! I want this shot as a fridge magnet now http://magicseaweed.com/photoLab/viewPhoto.php?photoId=44893&browseSession=537a43c48c6e902303949faf0d1cde07
You’re back! What happened to your profile chief? Hope your gonna re-uploadify some of your old classics. I image you have been MIA on the net, lost in Canon-rumours websites, dreaming of that magic upgrade.
The photo thing went a bit weird for a while and it seemed pointless them sitting there doing nothing. Also removed them cos they were quite good quality and didnt want people using them without me knowing. Posted smaller version on the www.slidemag.co.uk galleries now...
Oh and I got hacked off with putting up good shots which were obviously not shit and getting voted lots of 1's so it would never make the homepage... That sucked.
Yeah, I remember seeing some of your classics getting snubbed by the masses, criminal, but what do the plebeians know eh? Didn’t figure you were a home-page whore though! As for the habitual ‘1 voters’ they either don’t like surf photography or don’t like surfing, but I suspect that they actually don’t like their lives much either, there are some very bitter people out there in electro-wonderweb land. Come to think of it, you get about to some lush places while I am stuck in Kernow a slave to my mortgage…next time you upload a shot I am sooo gonna vote you 1’s bitch! ;-)
Hiya Sharpy! Mate kudos on your photography work - I've just checked out slidemag as an online mag - frickin brilliant! Very tongue in cheek but great quality - keep up the good shizzazle! =D
Much respect Sharps!! I am a semi -pro photog, also have work on MSW, ( i go by 'sUkya'). Your work is stunning!. I know you use a full frame, because the clarity is SICK. Do you personally fund all of your worldly expiditions or due board riders pay/bring you along to up their 'water-resume's'?
Great shots . I'm a photographer (amateur) in Westport WA USA and I am trying to start an international surfing event (online) on January 1st each year. I call it SURF DAY 1... and my goal is to inspire surfers to start the new year out right... in the water. What I would like (and this is where you come in) is for as many people as possible to send me a great picture from a New Years Day Surf Session.... wherever they are in the world. My goal for this first SURF DAY 1 is to get pictures from 10 countries and 50 beaches. Next year I want to make a bigger deal out of it. If you are taking pics on Jan 1 please email me one or two. Also please forward this to any other surfers and/or photographers to get the word out. You can see more about what I am talking about by going to www.surfday1.com
Thanks and have a great New Year!
