Brett: I was admiring your photos of Phuket and was just wondering if you had any advice on surfing in the area. I am going to be in Thailand for six months, mostly in Bangkok at Thammasat University, but since I travel every weekend, I definitely want to hit up some surf. I will probably head down to Phuket sometime in October, and was just curious as to weather you have ever surfed in Phuket around that time. Is it pretty consistent all year? Do the crowds get worse? Anything you know would be helpful, thanks!

I am heading to Ghana for a study abroad program and want to surf. I will be in Accra at the university. I surf a bunch of SoCal spots on a regular basis, Newport Beach most often. I would love any info about where to go, what to bring, etc.

Great shots . I'm a photographer (amateur) in Westport WA USA and I am trying to start an international surfing event (online) on January 1st each year. I call it SURF DAY 1... and my goal is to inspire surfers to start the new year out right... in the water. What I would like (and this is where you come in) is for as many people as possible to send me a great picture from a New Years Day Surf Session.... wherever they are in the world. My goal for this first SURF DAY 1 is to get pictures from 10 countries and 50 beaches. Next year I want to make a bigger deal out of it. If you are taking pics on Jan 1 please email me one or two. Also please forward this to any other surfers and/or photographers to get the word out. You can see more about what I am talking about by going to www.surfday1.com Thanks and have a great New Year! About Mr Brights Surf Shop Surf School and Camp
Mr Brights / Brett, started surfing at the age of 7, following in his father’s footsteps. With 30 years surfing experience, he has travelled to many countries throughout the world in search of perfect waves. Originally from Newquay, England, the surfing capital of the UK, Brett grew up surfing with some of the best surfers in Europe. His love of surfing took over his life and his career, which he has mostly spent working in the surfing industry.

From working in one of the UK’s leading surf shops, producing surfboards for some of Britain’s leading surfboard shapers, he most recently worked for the Australian surf brand Rip Curl. At Rip Curl, Brett worked as a sales rep, selling their products to surf shops throughout the UK. His speciality was in the wetsuit department and this led him to a promotion, working at the Head Office in Hossegor, France, as the European wetsuit and surfboard Product Manager.

After travelling to Ghana one year, Brett fell in love with the country and its people. He had always wanted to branch out on his own and start his own business within the surfing world, and Ghana seemed to offer this opportunity. Brett decided to take the risk to leave Rip Curl and follow his dream.

In 2009 he became a qualified surf coach and lifeguard and has been teaching at surf schools in France for the last 3 years, so gaining the valuable experience necessary to enable him to eventually run his own school in Ghana.

Returning to Ghana each year, Brett decided to start helping the local surfers and started a project called West African Surfing Association (WASA). With the help of his surfing friends and the generosity of surfing companies throughout Europe, he was able to gather surfboards and equipment to help the surfers of West Africa. Brett shipped his first container of equipment in 2010 and has donated equipment to surfers from Liberia, Cote D’Ivoire and Ghana. Brett has also been working closely with the surfers to help them perfect their surfing skills with training, plus organising local surfing events.
